I'm thinking about having a deck built off the back of my house and am curious if anyone has any good contractor recommendations. Price is one factor but the most important thing is just having it done right.I'd appreciate any help or recommendations; I looked through some of the old threads but most were a few years old.

Just remember that in north Carolina, decks are structural additions and, thus, are pains in the ass because of all the inspections and code requirements.

^ it's 2 inspections and a lot of jurisdictions just don't give a shit. if he's hiring someone, that would (should) be their responsibility anyway. As for code, I wouldn't want any part of a deck that wouldn't pass on my house. NC code on decks is pretty light overall. I'd hate to see a deck that barely meets code with the actual load that decks are supposed to be able to withstand. Ours are well above code and I don't consider them to be overbuilt. And no, I'm neither local or a "deck only" contractor.

where would one find the sections of the NC building code pertinent to decks?

in the 2009 version, it was appendix M.

It's been a little while now, but when I worked for a custom home builder we would use Blanchard Builders for our decks/fences. 919-796-0867. Ask for Bob Blanchard
