I really like two Raveonettes albums
4/15/2011 1:17:33 AM
Going for old blues stuff, the LPs. that's it. ie Skip James, etc.playing those 7s and 10s gets old pretty fast...
4/15/2011 1:29:05 AM
I'm really not going to enjoy working it and then djing afterwards. however... hope a lot of people come out.
4/15/2011 2:59:36 AM

4/15/2011 3:40:20 AM

4/15/2011 7:21:58 PM
8:30?? i thought schoolkids opens at 10
4/15/2011 7:25:01 PM
^yes, yes it does. i'm just estimating, based on the fact that the line started a little before 9 last year (at least that's what our manager said, i wasn't actually there; but he doesn't usually lie)you may be safe on the white stripes singles if you get in line later, like 9:30...but it's tough to say.
4/15/2011 7:28:52 PM
i'm gonna do what i did last year; show up at 9:45 and hope for the bestbut i almost might stand in front of the store and auction off my original copy of the big three killed my baby 7"
4/15/2011 7:35:45 PM
"A lot of people have called about the Phish seven-inch single coming out that day," Tschudi says.
4/15/2011 7:43:09 PM
Damn, line out the door at School kids.
4/16/2011 11:13:11 AM
Been waiting outside a store in DC for an hour and a half. Hoping to get The Immortal by Mississippi John Hurt. Picked up Superchunk's Here's Where the Strings Come In earlier though
4/16/2011 2:11:27 PM

4/16/2011 2:23:46 PM
got the deerhunter, of montreal, and Tomboy
4/16/2011 9:20:14 PM
I got The Gilded Palace of Sin, Burrito Deluxe and Mad Dogs and Englishmen
4/16/2011 9:40:59 PM
4/17/2011 3:26:35 AM
probably so, well-mastered mono will do most of that, though the higher speed adds a little bit of dynamic spectrum (just like running a tape machine at 30ips instead of 15ips) a lot of 78s are made of shellac and require special needle setups, thoughmostly it was just that i've got at least six different versions of each of those four tracks, and by that i mean those exact takes on six or more different releases ]

my friend's new-ish store in Durham made a killing yesterday.he, apparently, received a lot of compliments about how much better his selection was than Chaz's this year. (on the same street).[Edited on April 17, 2011 at 6:45 PM. Reason : .]
4/17/2011 6:44:56 PM
Schoolkids had its biggest day ever. about $1,500 more than the previous record, which was last year's RSD[Edited on April 17, 2011 at 7:02 PM. Reason : Offbeat^?]
4/17/2011 7:00:44 PM
just picked up all the vanguard stuff. Was at Lunchbox in Charlotte. Got there when they opened, said "fuck this shit," when back to bed, then went around 1pm and scored everything I wanted with no line. Rule.
4/17/2011 8:40:13 PM
^^^what is the name of your friend's store?
4/17/2011 9:48:28 PM
I'll answer that; I think it's Hunky Dory, which is a record/head shop right around the corner. I didn't know they were doing record store day stuff, though. Weird...Anyway, and in all respect to the guy, because he's as nice as can be, it's not hard to beat Chaz's inventory or prices. I would love for the record stores around here to be chock full of stock, but it doesn't seem like it's gonna happen. I guess there's just not as big of a market for it. There's Offbeat and Bull City (and I guess Hunky Dory to an extent), but none of them impress me with stock. It's unfortunate, but I'm not driving to Schoolkids or CD alley to get records every week. Also, not to come off as a total asshole, but that conversation yall were having about the dynamic ranges of 78s/45s etc, seems a little hard to swallow because I've always been skeptical about what records are even being spun on by all these alts these days. You'd have to be talking about serious high-end analog equipment to even notice differences in the subtleties of record speed sound differentiation, and it's a little hard for me to believe most people, especially on the Wolf Web, would go out and pop at least 500 bucks on a turntable. I'm not gonna bitch about the trendiness that has basically destroyed being able to find good thift records for cheap, or the novelty of just spinning records, but 78s? Get real. And thanks, vinylbandit, for pointing out how ridiculous buying a 78 rpm record would actually be.
4/17/2011 11:12:50 PM
yes, its Hunky Dory, and he's an NCSU guy so, support him.it wasn't started with the intention of ever being a vinyl first store, and he originally was only selling used vinyl... mostly stuff he had accumulated over the years.but, recently he's started selling new releases and such, and I know he had a huge day on Saturday. he's surprising me by how well he's doing overall, and i hope the success continues - it's still only 7 months old, after all.
4/17/2011 11:58:16 PM
i took pictures of a miami record store day event:http://www.miaminewtimes.com/slideshow/sweatstock-2011-at-sweat-records-33063312/

4/18/2011 2:00:31 AM
Okay, we can basically stop here. You just said "sound good" and "direct drive turntable," so it's clear you don't know what you're talking about, further proving my point. Oh, if only the size of someone's record collection dictated how much they actually knew about the intricacies of analog sound...
4/18/2011 10:02:30 AM
To be honest, I don't know much at all about the intricacies of analog sound or any technical stuff like that, but I don't pretend to. I'm the kind of person that will download stuff on what.cd whether it's a transcode or not, because I personally don't hear too much of a difference when it comes to slightly higher quality rips and pressings and that sort of stuff. Of course, I'm interested in that kind of thing and will always listen when someone is talking about it and pick up what I can, but I'm definitely an amateur when it comes to the intricacies of sound quality; I'm not ashamed to admit it.I collect vinyl as opposed to CDs simply because vinyl is more visually appealing to me, and I like the packaging and artwork that goes into vinyl infinitely more than that of CDs.
4/18/2011 10:09:21 AM
wait, what's wrong with direct drive?
4/18/2011 10:37:57 AM
^^toally respectable. ^your first clue is that no high end turntable is direct drive, unless you're buying DJ equipment. Otherwise, look it up...
4/18/2011 11:19:47 AM
^^ there's nothing "wrong" with direct drive, but if you start getting snippy about mfsl reissues and cartridge quality and then say that your home listening table is direct drive, it doesn't fall in line with the other stuff; even the cheap audiophile tables like the project debut iii are belt driveas for the problems with it, start with the fact that there's a large whirring motor connected mechanically to the record in a system where mechanical vibrations produce the sounddirect drive is good for DJing because you need the torque, but it's a bitch and a half when it comes to feedback because you've already introduced a bunch of unneeded vibration to the platter that can't be absorbed by the plinth, no matter how good it is ]

4/18/2011 11:37:22 AM
4/18/2011 11:42:15 AM
are we talking about the at-pl120/at-lp120usbbecause, if so, i have two of those and they are decent-sounding but very vibration-sensitive decks
4/18/2011 11:59:18 AM
at-pl120
4/18/2011 12:24:54 PM
More like alt-pl120.
4/18/2011 12:33:26 PM
^ I'm curious, mr. music, what table do you have?
4/18/2011 12:39:45 PM
mad nerds itt.
4/18/2011 1:09:17 PM
i'm the farthest from an expert on record players, but it was my understanding that direct drive > belt-driven. what other kinds are there?
4/18/2011 1:15:44 PM
^ I'll defer to Mr Music Troll, but my basic understanding is that direct-drives are gonna be better than most of the intro-level belt-drive players that most people start with, but not as good as the high-end belt-drive tables
4/18/2011 1:22:57 PM
oh yeah, I have an at-pl120 as well
4/18/2011 1:33:09 PM
I have a Marantz 6200 and a Projekt Debut 3 as vinylbandit mentioned above. The Projekt is a good table, but oh-so manual. And the Marantz needs motor work.
4/18/2011 1:46:51 PM
i don't mind having a manual table, since i used a 1200 at home for a long time, but removing the platter to change from 45/33 on the debut iii is a bitch and a half.i got a late '80s sony with a biotracer arm that i'm waiting for a headshell for. pretty pumped because a review site compared a similar biotracer model to a rega and preferred the sony.
4/18/2011 3:33:45 PM
Listening to the Skip James album now. Sounds fucking amazing.[Edited on April 18, 2011 at 9:33 PM. Reason : it's Pro-Ject, I forgot what they did to customize the word...]
4/18/2011 9:32:26 PM
I think there are advantages to each type of player, and I think its all about a person's needs. I also think a Technics SL1200, (and to a certain extent, the 1300-1900 models) sounds about as good as the belt drive tables.
4/19/2011 12:29:52 AM
vinylbandit, if you wanna recommend or if you know someone in the area thats good on working with vintage tables like this marantz, by all means refer me...Servo/motor control issue I believe. Pitch precision is shit. Would be a badass table otherwise. Since this thread has turned into me being a snob about spinning records, let me emphasize the importance of keeping your records and needle clean. I really hope you folks aren't taking new records right out of the sleeve and spinning them with all the manufacturing debris and other shit that gets all over them. Get a brush. Theyre like 10 bucks. You'll thank yourself with how long the needle and records can last without getting poppy and static-y...
4/19/2011 12:43:01 AM
Also, the "entry level" belt drive tables I guess you're referring to are probably that Sony you can find at HH Greg, some Denon stuff that I've had personal experience with, and maybe some stuff you find every now and again at thift stores/record stores for cheap. The latter, I really wouldn't fuck with unless you know exactly what you're getting into. Otherwise, those new, entry level tables suck because they're all-plastic and made in China, and I'm sure there's other reasons... I had one of those Denon's I was referring to not too long ago, and it was a damned $300 table. You'd expect something decent from it, but...total piece of shit. Avoid at all costs. Definitely paying for the name alone.
