better come early (like 8 or 8:30-ish) if you want these items, as these are the ones i got the most calls about today:

flaming lips lp box set
phish 7"
big star lp
pink floyd lp
nirvana lp
white stripes 7"s
beach boys 10"
ryan adams ep

those are the ones that come most immediately to mind.

also, this is pretty cool, schoolkids got a shout-out in Time Magazine and they interviewed tommy wiseau: http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,2065345,00.html

^yes, yes it does. i'm just estimating, based on the fact that the line started a little before 9 last year (at least that's what our manager said, i wasn't actually there; but he doesn't usually lie)

you may be safe on the white stripes singles if you get in line later, like 9:30...but it's tough to say.

maybe, but it sounds fucking fantastic. i had never played a 78 before, and i could tell a huge difference in sound quality-- louder and much more well-defined

probably so, well-mastered mono will do most of that, though the higher speed adds a little bit of dynamic spectrum (just like running a tape machine at 30ips instead of 15ips)

a lot of 78s are made of shellac and require special needle setups, though

mostly it was just that i've got at least six different versions of each of those four tracks, and by that i mean those exact takes on six or more different releases

my friend's new-ish store in Durham made a killing yesterday.

he, apparently, received a lot of compliments about how much better his selection was than Chaz's this year. (on the same street).

I'll answer that; I think it's Hunky Dory, which is a record/head shop right around the corner. I didn't know they were doing record store day stuff, though. Weird...

Anyway, and in all respect to the guy, because he's as nice as can be, it's not hard to beat Chaz's inventory or prices. I would love for the record stores around here to be chock full of stock, but it doesn't seem like it's gonna happen. I guess there's just not as big of a market for it. There's Offbeat and Bull City (and I guess Hunky Dory to an extent), but none of them impress me with stock. It's unfortunate, but I'm not driving to Schoolkids or CD alley to get records every week.

Also, not to come off as a total asshole, but that conversation yall were having about the dynamic ranges of 78s/45s etc, seems a little hard to swallow because I've always been skeptical about what records are even being spun on by all these alts these days. You'd have to be talking about serious high-end analog equipment to even notice differences in the subtleties of record speed sound differentiation, and it's a little hard for me to believe most people, especially on the Wolf Web, would go out and pop at least 500 bucks on a turntable. I'm not gonna bitch about the trendiness that has basically destroyed being able to find good thift records for cheap, or the novelty of just spinning records, but 78s? Get real. And thanks, vinylbandit, for pointing out how ridiculous buying a 78 rpm record would actually be.

yes, its Hunky Dory, and he's an NCSU guy so, support him.

it wasn't started with the intention of ever being a vinyl first store, and he originally was only selling used vinyl... mostly stuff he had accumulated over the years.

but, recently he's started selling new releases and such, and I know he had a huge day on Saturday.

he's surprising me by how well he's doing overall, and i hope the success continues - it's still only 7 months old, after all.

I would have an easier time respecting your post if you had actually listened to the record we're discussing.

Also, I'm unclear as to how your mini-rant relates to "the trendiness that has basically destroyed being able to find good thift (sic) records for cheap", but I assure you that I've been an avid vinyl collector and listener since the age of 15 (I'm 29 now). I have close to 1000 records and listen intently to at least 6 lps a night. I have an audio-technica direct-drive turntable that cost around $400 2 years ago (I mention this ONLY because you questioned the ability of anyone on the Wolf Web to have a decent record player). So, if I hear something that I think sounds really fucking good, I'm gonna notice it and I'm going to feel fairly confident in my assessment of it. Besides, I bought the disc because I love the beach boys, not because it was a 78. It could've been a 12", a 45, whatever.

Okay, we can basically stop here. You just said "sound good" and "direct drive turntable," so it's clear you don't know what you're talking about, further proving my point. Oh, if only the size of someone's record collection dictated how much they actually knew about the intricacies of analog sound...

To be honest, I don't know much at all about the intricacies of analog sound or any technical stuff like that, but I don't pretend to. I'm the kind of person that will download stuff on what.cd whether it's a transcode or not, because I personally don't hear too much of a difference when it comes to slightly higher quality rips and pressings and that sort of stuff. Of course, I'm interested in that kind of thing and will always listen when someone is talking about it and pick up what I can, but I'm definitely an amateur when it comes to the intricacies of sound quality; I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I collect vinyl as opposed to CDs simply because vinyl is more visually appealing to me, and I like the packaging and artwork that goes into vinyl infinitely more than that of CDs.

^^ there's nothing "wrong" with direct drive, but if you start getting snippy about mfsl reissues and cartridge quality and then say that your home listening table is direct drive, it doesn't fall in line with the other stuff; even the cheap audiophile tables like the project debut iii are belt drive

as for the problems with it, start with the fact that there's a large whirring motor connected mechanically to the record in a system where mechanical vibrations produce the sound

direct drive is good for DJing because you need the torque, but it's a bitch and a half when it comes to feedback because you've already introduced a bunch of unneeded vibration to the platter that can't be absorbed by the plinth, no matter how good it is

yeh, I echo this sentiment as well. to me, buying an lp is like buying a piece of functional artwork. I also tend to think they sound better than cds and mp3s but some of it might be situation and setting (i.e., relaxing and listening to vinyl in a peaceful environment vs. listening to cds in my car or mp3s at the gym).

Quote :
"You just said "sound good"... so it's clear you don't know what you're talking about"

ok, the argument was that you said there is no way that i would be able to tell if the 78 of good vibrations sounded considerably better than good vibrations in a different format. to my ears, it sounded really fucking good-- better than if i was playing my 45 of good vibrations. I didn't say anything about analog sound or other technical information because frankly it's not at all important to me to be able to spout off audiophile geek info. i'm more concerned about have a wide breath of knowledge about the MUSIC i'm listening to-- not the equipment on which I'm listening.

I never said anything close to this! All I said was that the Good Vibrations 78 sounded really fucking good, and then I got accosted by people who haven't even listened to the fucking thing! I've had belt-driven turntables up until 2 years ago. I was ready for a change, and I wanted some of the features of the direct-drive. I have no problems with whirring motors and mechanical vibrations on my player, but I guess according to you guys I wouldn't know how to recognize those things anyway.
Guess I'll just throw in the towel and get out the old fisher price plastic player!

i don't mind having a manual table, since i used a 1200 at home for a long time, but removing the platter to change from 45/33 on the debut iii is a bitch and a half.

i got a late '80s sony with a biotracer arm that i'm waiting for a headshell for. pretty pumped because a review site compared a similar biotracer model to a rega and preferred the sony.

I think there are advantages to each type of player, and I think its all about a person's needs. I also think a Technics SL1200, (and to a certain extent, the 1300-1900 models) sounds about as good as the belt drive tables.

vinylbandit, if you wanna recommend or if you know someone in the area thats good on working with vintage tables like this marantz, by all means refer me...Servo/motor control issue I believe. Pitch precision is shit. Would be a badass table otherwise.

Since this thread has turned into me being a snob about spinning records, let me emphasize the importance of keeping your records and needle clean. I really hope you folks aren't taking new records right out of the sleeve and spinning them with all the manufacturing debris and other shit that gets all over them. Get a brush. Theyre like 10 bucks. You'll thank yourself with how long the needle and records can last without getting poppy and static-y...

Also, the "entry level" belt drive tables I guess you're referring to are probably that Sony you can find at HH Greg, some Denon stuff that I've had personal experience with, and maybe some stuff you find every now and again at thift stores/record stores for cheap. The latter, I really wouldn't fuck with unless you know exactly what you're getting into. Otherwise, those new, entry level tables suck because they're all-plastic and made in China, and I'm sure there's other reasons... I had one of those Denon's I was referring to not too long ago, and it was a damned $300 table. You'd expect something decent from it, but...total piece of shit. Avoid at all costs. Definitely paying for the name alone.
