I'm leaving tomorrow and I've never been there before.

Can anyone recommend any good restaurants, boutiques, etc?

Make sure you go to the market. It's amazing.

And pretty much any authentic tapas restaurant will be great. Spanish tapas are some of my favorite foods. Enjoy...it's an awesome city. Make sure you see as much of Gaudi's work as you can. Sagrada Familia is incredible.

Barcelona is amazing. I'll suggest the obligatory beach visit. It is worth it.

Make time to visit La Segrada Familia and Parque Guell. Neither will disappoint and both offer incredible views and unbelievable artistic expression. I love this city. The double decker bus tours that make 30+ stops throughout the city are a fantastic way to get around to some of the major sight seeing spots, as they are quite spread out...have a blast!!!

if it's warm out, try "tinto verano." It's a drink made with ice, lemon soda, and red wine. VERY tasty and refreshing! sounds girly but everyone in Spain drinks it.

Yep, and the beach trip. Wonder if the renovations are 'finished' at La Segrada? When I was there in 04 I couldn't go inside

If you go out at night I'll warn you to be careful along las rambla at night (like late night). it gets pretty seedy as the night goes on.

^I was able to go inside in '08...but I honestly don't know if renovations will be finished in our lifetime from the way it was described to me.

And Las Ramblas is seedy, but interesting. I pretty much had to tell the prostitutes there that I was gay and grabbed my friend's hand to get them to leave me alone. Very persistent.

I wish I could remember the name of the little tapas place I went to one day. It was a hole in the wall...but it was packed. No seats, New York Stock Exchange type atmosphere where you had to yell your order and hopefully get to the counter when it was ready. Meat hanging everywhere like a butcher shop and bottles of cava for 4 Euros. Food was awesome. One of the best eating experiences I had in Europe. Oh well...

I went to Barca March 4-11th this year. Segrada was open and you can take an elevator to the top and then walk the spiral staircases down with amazing views. Make reservations!!! if not, you'll stand in line forever, especially for the separate elevator pass. There are 1,000 churches in Barca and I felt like seeing one was seeing them all but Segrada is different, it is a must see attraction.

I really liked walking down Las Ramblas (runs from city center to the beach) and just bar hopping or just grabbing beers and drinking while I walked. You aren't really supposed to but the cops are a joke and don't give a shit as long as you aren't making a scene. Same goes for

Icebar was a popular spot for people on my program because it's a small bar made of ice and $15 gets you jackets, hat and gloves, admission and a drink. Not as big as Scandinavian ones you see on travel channel.

Parque Gues is awesome. The Miro Museam sucked to me. Picasso museum was good but it's mostly his early, non abstract stuff. I got sick of Paella and Tapas quickly because to get good ones you have to spend a ton of money. The Euro is pretty high right now.

It will likely be too cold to swim but the beach is still nice and the bars down there are cool. Get a travel guide for restaurant recommendations as I can't remember any of them except for Cal Pep, which is EXTREMELY popular locally. Get there when they open or wait forever. Make reservations. My favorite bar was Cactus Bar near Cal Pep, they served the best Mojitos I've ever had and were packed with Spanish people daily.

Other than that just walk around off the side streets of Las Ramblas toward the beach and get lost and see where you end up. Cabs are extremely inexpensive.

PM me if you want to know anything more specific

Avoid defecating in public restrooms. The facilities at most establishments make Wal Mart bathrooms here look like the Ritz.
