They did a special on Gameday on this in 2005 iirc correctly. Even interviewed a State player that was from NY that said (paraphrased from memory), "I thought 'what the hell are they doing?' I wasn't going to participate in that. I thought it was stupid. Looking back now, I wish I would have cut down those nets with them."

Both may be true as far as introducing them 1 by 1 instead of just reading off the 5 starters of each team before tip off. Not sure of the whole story.
