I am looking to get my deck renovated. I basically want to expand the deck to include my hot tub. I got a quote from deckxperts in Wake Forest but Iwas not impressed. The Picture I am about to include was made by the estimator on his ipad as we were walking around. It took 36 or so hours to get back to me with this as an "estimate". While I appreciate the fact that it's broken down in such a manner, i'd like the common courtesy to have a "final price, everything included." Lemme know what you got tdub...

Neighbors just had their deck redone for a hot tub with a roofed enclosure... used angie's list for picking contractors and the winner was a bid for about $12,000

Lowes/Home Depot have a ton of books on decks. Is this something you would rather pay someone to do for you or you do it yourself?

Building a deck seems like it should not cost a lot, but in reality when you factor in the pressure treated wood, deck screws (which are expensive), and stain (which is fucking very expensive), the material costs can add up quick. Labor to build decks is always going to be high.

Maybe you can get them to quote just building the deck and you can do the staining on your own. If you go this route, make sure you get a sprayer if staining the lattice work.

Check out SKY. They did my moms deck and did great. Angies list is a great place to look too

1) Don't forget the building permit if your area requires one

2) Not quite sure what you mean by your last statement...sometimes shit happens that causes the cost to go up, which is why estimates are rarely a guaranteed "final price". The common courtesy part would typically involve little more than taking those spread our dollar figures on that page and line item-ing them.

3) Make sure they're aware that they're building a structure to support a hot tub. Don't laugh, it happens.

4) Since you're renovating, spring for a flame/burn resistant covering around the grill area. It'd be a shame to torch your nice new deck over a cooking accident.

Parents just re-did the lake house with trex decking and it turned out great, not sure what kind of a premium it has pricewise but if this is a place you will have for awhile it might be worth looking into.
