I was at the game store yesterday checking stuff out and one game called shadowrun really caught my eye. the more I read about it, the cooler it sounds. Anyone else play it or other table top games they care to recommend? I've never played anything besides magic and milton bradley type shit.

i played shadow run on the sega genesisfun game except for the hacking parts i hated them shitsbut running around capping people in the streets was fun, and inflitrating heavy security buildings.cant do table top games though.

Shadowrun is a lot of fun with a good group, but it functions a lot differently than your standard d20 system. I'd suggest giving it a shot if you can get a group of 5-6 people to play. 1 GM and a group of 4-5 players would probably work out best for starting it. That way your group can cover most situations as long as its balanced, having everyone play cybernetic brawlers would leave you up a creek however.

seriously.grown men playing dungeons and dragons shit.

Shadowrun is a decent rpg. I have not played the newest edition however. When I was playing it, I believe it was in 2nd edition. overall, worth playing but there are better RGPs out there. What sort of stuff are you interested in. Was it the cyberpunk aspect of shadowrun that interested you? the post apocalyptic feel? The combination of magic and technology? My all time favorite RPG is no longer in print but is available pretty dang cheap on ebay if you dont mind used stuff. Teenage mutant ninja turtles and other strangeness published by palladium games. Seriously, let me know what sort of stuff you want to role play and I will likely have played it. I am a huge nerd and can probably give you a decent recommendation.

I second SI haven't played Shadows over Camelot, but Settlers, Dominion, and Puerto Rico are all awesome games. Next time I'm in town, maybe we can play! Settlers of Catan is a good one to start with, it's similar to Risk but waaaaaay better.

My best friend of 25 years is into this stuff. Like REALLY into it. It's how he met his wife and practically all of his post-high school friends. He runs/participates in 4-5 weekly/biweekly games (Shadowrun, Vampire the Masquerade, DnD, 7th sea, several others) and has been bugging me for the last 10 years to come out and try it. Recently I started going to his biweekly Shadowrun game and I have to say it's kind of fun. It takes a while to get used to the extreme nerd factor and the fact that grown men and women are having full conversations with each other in character, but once you drop the "I'm too cool to be doing this" facade and join in, it's enjoyable.

is this game based on the video game or vice versa?

rpg first, video game later.

general guide lines for living in a table top1) never just walk though a door2) check the room, then enter. Use an invisible minion, small drone, fiber-optic camera, scrying, sneaky as hell rogue, etc to look in check it out (varies depending on game, don't let the guy that rolls like crap scout).3) look forward, left, right, up and down before entering4) Always bring ropeThis will save you at least 1 gruesome death per campaign, probably more[Edited on March 29, 2011 at 5:32 PM. I play Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition every Sunday, and I am currently running Vampire: The Masquerade using Vampire: The Requiem rules on Thursday nights. Soon, we'll switch over to Aberrant on Thursdays, and I'll probably start a Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition game on Sunday when D&D ends. I love tabletop! I've been playing with a bunch of Wolf Webbers for, like, ten years now.
3/29/2011 6:33:04 PM
^^I'm really glad my friend doesn't run his game like that. Our games are usually more about planning and executing extractions or assassinations or something like that and not about stressing over every little rock ^in the corner. At least not his shadowrun games. I went to a couple of his DnD games and they were more meticulous like that, but that's one of the reasons I didn't keep going to them.[Edited on March 29, 2011 at 6:37 PM. Reason : ^]

While I knew many wolfwebbers were nerds I am pleasantly surprised at the number of (tabletop) gamers there are in here. ^^ Do you do any other wargaming or just 40k? Does anyone else do tabletop wargaming? or do yall just stick to RPGs?
3/29/2011 7:46:43 PM
I once lived with a couple guys who played tabletop RPGs (and one of them was in an SCA-like group that's basically LARPing without magic) and was surprised by how little they actually failed at life.
3/29/2011 7:49:39 PM
@Nerdchick - I'd love to play with you the next time you're in raleigh. I haven't seen you since before you graduated
3/29/2011 8:05:16 PM
Fine then.... who wants to play Necromunda?
3/29/2011 9:30:57 PM
I DM a Gamma World (4e) campaign, but I also like miniature wargames. I picked up Ex Illis at last year's GenCon. I built a 100+miniature army, but the company that produces the game went bankrupt in February. I may take up Warmachine whenever this campaign ends.
3/30/2011 2:01:47 AM
I probably would have played D&D as a kid and loved it, but literally nobody in my school played (small country school).A couple kids tried to get me into warhammer fantasy, but I wasn't about to drop over $9000 to build an army to play.
3/30/2011 2:14:57 AM
For the record, I didn't play D&D until I was 22 years old, and everyone I know who plays didn't start playing in regular games until they were college age. While I consider myself a pretty easy-going DM, I don't like dealing with players under the age of 16. Kids are just too dumb, and get too emotionally invested in their characters.
3/30/2011 8:04:46 AM
Nerdchick, you and smoothcrim should come over and play Settlers next time you're in town.I've wanted to get into tabletop RPGs for years. I'm mostly interested in the cyperpunk meets fantasy aspect of Shadowrun, but I think I'd enjoy playing just about anything with the friends that I have.[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 9:24 AM. Biggest board game geek on TWW right here. Also played a few RPGs in my day.Shadowrun is cool, but I don't know anyone that still plays it....it's sorta old school.
3/30/2011 10:59:16 AM
How is it old-school, exactly?Loads of people play Shadowrun, though. They released a 4th edition in 2005, an Xbox 360 game in 2007, a 20th anniversary edition in 2009, they have a "living campaign" event in game stores (including Game Theory) called Missions, they're still publishing modules and sourcebooks, they're about to drop the Runner's Kit with a screen and all that...shit is vibrant!

My experience is such that kids have trouble keeping things from getting personal; its the difference between role-playing a frustrated character and actually getting angry when something bad happens to your PC. Thats what I meant by "emotional investment".Immersion is great. I can tell how much fun someone is having by how immersed they are.
3/30/2011 1:37:35 PM
shadowrun was one that i always wanted to play. i was a fan of the cyberpunk theme. i remember just looking at the artwork in the players guide and that alone making want to play.
3/30/2011 1:52:53 PM
I was introduced to Settlers of Catan about a month ago and Dominion this past weekend. I don't really play them that often but I really enjoy them when I do.
3/30/2011 2:34:04 PM
Settlers is always a great game in part because it's very accessible: I can teach someone who has never played the basics in one game. Dominion is one I've heard good things about but never played before.
3/30/2011 2:48:28 PM
i will play necromunda! havent played since probably 2004 though. still got all the original scenery from the boxed set and a bunch of unpainted minis. one painted orlock gang though.@smoothcrim If you want a roleplaying game that gets away from those same fantasy races we are all familiar with try a different genre. maybe call of cthullhu (horror roleplaying in lovecraft's mythos) or feng shui (hong kong action movie roleplaying). if you want more suggestions let me know. I have unloaded a bunch of my roleplaying stuff over the years but could probably steer you in the right direction if you give me more info on what you want to be doing.[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 3:20 PM. I cut my teeth on the old West End Games (Star Wars) and Palladium (Palladium Fantasy and TMNT) RPGs. From there I progressed to the White Wolf universe. From a game mechanics perspective I still like the White Wolf D10 based systems. I've never gotten into the D20 based games.I've always been a table top board gamer. I've spent many a night waring over the Axis and Allies game board. I still like to play Advanced Civilization and Machiavelli. Settlers of Catan I still play often.
3/30/2011 3:48:12 PM
this many posts and no mention of diplomacy
3/30/2011 8:45:11 PM
Machiavelli is a variant of Diplomacy
3/31/2011 3:53:12 AM
I play a tabletop based on the 40k universe called Deathwatch. It uses a percentile dice system as opposed to the D20 system. Also you are a fucking Space Marine..so it's hard to beat that.I've also played Warhammer 40k for several years. Currently playing at a place in Cary called The Gamer's Armory. They specialize in board and war games and have an extensive game library if you want to play a game before you buy or are just looking for a way to kill time.
3/31/2011 7:08:34 AM
Why are y'all talking about board games like Diplomacy and Settlers of Catan in a damn tabletop RPGs thread?
3/31/2011 8:57:34 AM
Where does Arkham Horror fit into all this jazz?
3/31/2011 10:11:35 AM
In a thread titled "Board Games" and not "table top rpgs".
3/31/2011 10:30:23 AM
d&d is cool. The most important thing is having a good GM. Also its fun to in game harrass that other PC who takes it all super serious.
3/31/2011 10:39:16 AM
^^^^ Because interests overlap and the real purpose of any tabletop game; be it strategy, rpg, or otherwise; is to bullshit with your friends and consume junk food.
3/31/2011 1:58:48 PM
^ troo. great way for fellow nerds to nerd out
3/31/2011 2:14:39 PM
^^^ or try to drive the DM crazy. The 4e campaign i am in now we have one guy playing a bard and his singular goal is to get all the way to 30 without taking or causing damage. So far he's up to 7 and is probably the most useful member of the party in combat.
3/31/2011 2:43:57 PM
I may have played some Shadowrun back in the day. Haven't done any tabletop RPG's in years, though. Lots of my friends in NC have been getting into D&D recently, but I don't have a similar circle of friends out here in California.
3/31/2011 4:56:50 PM
lets roll up some characters yo... and none of that comeliness bullshit either.
3/31/2011 7:52:47 PM
well im trying to assemble a group and i got 3 definites and 2 maybes. one is bullshitting about his wow schedule other might be moving. 2 more definites would be ideal.
3/31/2011 11:10:14 PM
Heroscape FTWThey stopped making it a few years ago so to buy the sets now costs triple what it originally cost, but the boards and pieces are built to last. You make a new board every time and you can customize every game so really no two games are ever the same unless you want them to be. Kids can be surprisingly good at defeating an adult's strategy as well so it's really fun if it's grown-ups, kids, or both.[Edited on April 1, 2011 at 10:01 AM.
