will someone fucking explain this to me? nothing on my network is requesting anything near the bandwidth that is being shown on the WAN. not to mention, my cap is fucking 3MB/s. So the fact that it can spike to 30MB/s makes ZERO FUCKING SENSE. it's making my internet unusable when it happens (it doesn't constantly happen but it can go on for awhile). i've sent an email to the support people but they probably won't ever have a clue.i'm on an apartment internet service, NTC. they are connected (at some point) to the NCREN ring if that makes a difference.

usuites
3/26/2011 11:35:05 PM
ah, they use the same internet peeps.
3/26/2011 11:42:05 PM
but, yes. [agree]i'm more mad at the fucking TV service than I am internet service.DISH network analog bullshit makes it impossible to watch hurricanes games because i can't change to the regional subchannel. and i want HD.
3/26/2011 11:50:51 PM
^ YES. fucking A. that pissed me off so goddamn much
3/27/2011 12:12:54 AM
it took like 2 months for them to finally tell me it was impossible to fix after i kept pressing the fucking issue. support told me they had no idea what i was talking about me, got the complex to email the support contact they had, who said they didn't have the package here to do it, then i went to the DISH website where you can lookup where all sports games will be and what package you need to watch it, where it clearly said you just needed the package they already had.[Edited on March 27, 2011 at 12:15 AM. Reason : i want to break things.]
3/27/2011 12:15:47 AM
it's the way NTC has their network set upyou can't really do much about it
3/27/2011 10:52:20 AM
that makes no sense. why is it happening
3/27/2011 4:40:27 PM
Your internets are sad
3/27/2011 5:05:26 PM
Use wireshark and get a packet capture to see what the traffic in question is.
3/27/2011 6:53:11 PM
answer: porn.
3/27/2011 7:08:29 PM
3 MB/s == 24 Mbps
3/28/2011 1:01:47 AM
^Wow yeah, I overlooked that. This is your answer.Click the "Switch to bytes/s" option.
3/28/2011 2:36:55 AM
regardless, it's still maxing out my speed for no apparent reason.
3/28/2011 11:39:54 AM
Examples of traffic destinations that you are not aware that any of the devices connected to your network are supposed to be contacting.I'm not sure how much wireshark is going to help if the problem is not a virus or something on your computer. You want to look at some type of router logging.
3/28/2011 1:11:54 PM
ooh now they're gonna come "test my connection"
3/28/2011 3:39:47 PM
To clarify, usuites NTC service is 3 Mbps, not 3 MB/s.I usually just tether to my phone when the internet starts fuckin up.
3/28/2011 7:40:39 PM
well plugging directly in (And the issue still seems happen occasionally) and shutting down everything i can, i feel like there's far too much happening that isn't coming from me. but i'm assuming its the way the network is setup, i'm seeing packets that don't involve my IP address but do involve other local IP addresses. a lot of them, mostly TCP if that's significant at all.
3/28/2011 7:58:12 PM
i'm gonna take a wild guess and say that this is a /16 subnetin which case you're most likely seeing a metric shitton of broadcast/multicast traffic.in the pcap you got before, go to Statistics > Protocol Hierarchy. take a screenshot and post it here.
3/28/2011 9:16:50 PM
[Edited on March 28, 2011 at 9:58 PM. Reason : 90 seconds of capture]
3/28/2011 9:56:51 PM
k, so i'm told they are having issues within the complex and they're trying to figure it out now... it's not just me.
3/29/2011 9:53:09 AM
yeah if ~99% of it is TCP, it's unlikely to be garden variety broadcast/multicast traffic, but we'd have to look at the packets themselves to get a better idea of what's going on.
3/29/2011 10:37:30 AM
yeah, i was expecting an ARP storm or something, lulz.
3/29/2011 2:39:25 PM

4/3/2011 9:00:37 PM
what are the chances your complex has an overzealous packet shaper? packeteer perhaps
4/4/2011 8:34:43 AM
i've thought about that and I guess there's a chance but I really kind of doubt it.
