my buddy asked me what the best mechanic near campus was to get new shocks and struts and maybe some other work on his e36. i have no idea, i've never really needed one while i've lived anywhere near campus. either of the places on hillsborough st?

My husband has a BMW code reader/resetter and has done pretty much everything to an e36 (just finished a euro swap). If you are looking for a guy instead of a shop send me a PM and I'll give you his contact info. He works on other BMWs and import cars as well.

He even made the ti quit leaking (it had 339k on it when I bought it). That might be almost as impressive as the euro swap.

European M3 engine put into an American M3. You must not have worked on many to not know the euro ones come with a different engine. Involves all sorts of shit that most shops haven't even had to do (put in the euro gauges, realign the electronics, etc). That's why he has all the software to realign the EWS, reprogram the DME (or ECM, depending on what you call it), check codes, etc. Normally shops charge up to $80 just to read the codes, which is not something you can do yourself unless you have the software and cables.

No, I have not been directly involved with any of this. I just have to listen to him talk about it.

lewoods, obviously the term "euro swap" is rather generic, it'd be more helpful to be specific,
ie: "My husband swapped an S52b32 engine into a 96 M3." or something along those lines. Furthermore, the ease with which the swap is completed will vary greatly by year of the receiving car (95 vs 96+) as well as if it's intended to be driven on the street or not.

Better yet, let your husband who did the work post here.
