Been doing a decent amount of running lately, trying to get in shape. But of course, the legs have been way sore afterwards. Been taking a hot bath after running, and it seems to help them from being as sore. However, someone told me this was bad for your muscles, and a cold bath is better. Getting mixed reviews from google. Any ideas?

heat may feel good but it increases swelling which can increase your recovery time

http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285--11556-0,00.htmlThe first time I tried it, dear lord it hurt. I never realized my IT bands were a problem until I foam rolled and found out how much better it felt to have them loosen up. It is less of a cure in the immediate sense, and more of a help you function better in the big picture type thing. Though it does help when my quads are sore (because usually when they are sore they are too tight). Also I have a set of these that get deeper into places that the foam roller sometimes isn't the best for, like my hamstrings and glutes [Edited on March 9, 2011 at 3:21 PM. honestly its just continuing the workoutwhat you can do is heat before the next workout and ice down afterwards do prevent actual damage, but soreness is soreness its a reaction.other than that its gonna happen until your muscle memory becomes familiar, then if you step up the intensity youll get it again.it sucks because right now my legs are sore as FUCK just because i did a hundred freesquat + front kick type exercises. it was no thing to do that shti and I do much worse every day. But its just that switch up that will do it. its important to heat before cool after stretch stretch stretch because i was on the couch horseplayin with my girl and I got that charlie sheen horse -not just charlie horse- that motherfuckin CHARLIE SHEEN tigerblood adonis shit for like 30 minutesif id have stretched and heated and iced id not have had that happen

Recovery drink with some protein in it inside 30 minutes of finishing. You've done a lot of damage (necessarily) to the muscles, and they will be rebuilding soon. Not this muscle-bound take-to-supplement-the-'roids 5-gallon jug-o-muscle food, but something with some easily accessible protein. A glass of milk works, I've used plain yogurt, frozen fruit and a spoonful of whey protein blended as a shake.Adding a small amount of protein ahead of time or during (soy, not whey/milk here) can also help, but less so than the recovery period.

Whatever you do, just don't overdo your running.

Ran 4.5 miles to lake johnson and back from my apt tuesday; felt good but left my legs sore. Yesterday I got in about a mile before my right quad (same one i pulled/tore last year) started hurting alot so i called it quits and iced it up
