The other night my family went to my sister's house for dinner. My mom and sister started watching the Oscars just to see the dresses. Somewhere along the way they mentioned Lady Gaga and a meat dress that she wore last year to one of those celebrity awards events. I mentioned the Iowa State Bell Tower youtube to my sister. I think it is kind of cool since my family is from Iowa, even though I pay no attention to Lady Gaga related stuff.the above story + beer + NC State always seeming to be average at everything + the recent Krispy Kreme Challenge = me wondering what college/university has the best looking bell tower? I'm not counting churches like the Duke Chapel either, just the ones that stand alone.NC StateUNC Chapel HillOle MissFurmanUC BerkeleyUniversity of FloridaBall StateIowa StatePurdueIllinoisTexas A&MIndianaMichiganStanfordMy beer is gone and I have to work tomorrow, so my pointless thread is done.[Edited on March 3, 2011 at 2:20 AM. Wow I really like Furman's bell tower ]
3/3/2011 2:17:35 AM
Furman's is pretty fuckin boss. But N.C. State's is till better than UNC's.
3/3/2011 2:40:38 AM
Anyone but Ball State.Though I'd like to nominate them for worst name.
3/3/2011 2:41:23 AM
Even the location of the Furman bell tower is stunning.
3/3/2011 2:48:59 AM
that Indiana Bell Tower is straight up gangster.
3/3/2011 4:29:06 AM
The Michigan bell tower looks like a prision
3/3/2011 6:47:00 AM
I do like Furman's. Ball State is kinda cool...but why would you even put the Texas A&M one up there? Its garbage.
3/3/2011 7:50:03 AM
In before back to the future reference.
3/3/2011 7:50:49 AM
^that was called the clock tower, not bell.but Furman's is boss!]
3/3/2011 7:54:07 AM
Ugh- some of those are ugly as sinAnd if course- UNC's tower looks a little fruity
3/3/2011 8:06:15 AM
NC States is the best of those
3/3/2011 8:18:50 AM
I like ours, ole miss, UF, and UC BerkleyFurman's is gaudy as hell, but being right next to that reflection pond is pretty cool. some of the other ones I would like more with better surroundings, like maybe Michigan and Iowa Statepurdue's aint too bad either
3/3/2011 8:22:03 AM
Furman's fits in well with the campus as a whole though. it may stand out compared to the ones posted but i think it's awesome]
3/3/2011 8:26:44 AM
Ok, location is really cool on that one, but all the big "windows," or whatever you would call them, take away from it as a whole IMO- especially since they get bigger as they go up[Edited on March 3, 2011 at 8:30 AM. Reason : yuck]
3/3/2011 8:29:34 AM
bell tower with bells > bell tower without bells
3/3/2011 8:36:48 AM
^Agree. Speaker Tower < Bell Tower
3/3/2011 8:37:27 AM
I would definitely put ours in the top 3. Some of those are just ugly as sin.For some reason I remember Berkeley's tower looking better than it seems to look in photos.
3/3/2011 9:26:47 AM
this thread makes me hornyalso I'll vote for Furhman...so pretty
3/3/2011 10:36:28 AM
brick penises
3/3/2011 10:52:18 AM
Furman, but primarily due to location. Berkeley makes me think of a castle and wins points for that, as do a couple others. Looks like some of these schools stole our bricks.
3/3/2011 11:03:52 AM
^^yes please
3/3/2011 11:21:44 AM
berkleys looks like it should be attached to the biltmore house
3/3/2011 12:01:23 PM
Does this one count:It is a tower with bells, but it has offices in it as well. Probably one of the most well-known towers in US universities. Also would you consider the Duke Chapel tower to be in the running? Its a part of a chapel, but the tower is the main symbol of Duke in the same way that our speaker tower and the Carolina bell tower are for them.[Edited on March 3, 2011 at 12:33 PM. Reason : ]

Illinois looks pretty cool. I think I like Berkley's the best though. And what does Lady Gaga have to do with any of this?
3/3/2011 12:37:27 PM
they played a lady gaga song over their bell system at some point over the last yearyoutube it
3/3/2011 12:41:59 PM
Does duke's chapel count? there are bells in its tower right?
3/3/2011 12:43:59 PM
^I would be of the opinion that it would be. Not all of the bell towers are free standing structures for universities. Many can't afford to build a separate tower from a chapel if they have one on campus.
3/3/2011 12:47:13 PM
I'm going with Old Miss, looks fairly new & probably lacks tradition...but I like it. On a aside note, the Chapel Hill tower looks just as gay as the guys there.
3/3/2011 1:06:12 PM
what about the infamous bell tower of UT Austin
3/3/2011 1:31:47 PM
3/3/2011 1:34:13 PM
I like ours, Furman's, Berkeley, and Illinois and Indiana (modernist bell towers, an interesting concept.) Really though, Berkeley's is basically the same design as ours except a little taller, with taller corner spires and a pointy hat. Also, someone forgot to put windows on Florida's tower. The top is nice, but the giant mass of featureless brick supporting it leaves something to be desired.

3/3/2011 6:48:33 PM
I think I actually like ours the best. Ole Miss is nice, too. I also submit the Ferrum College belltower:[Edited on March 3, 2011 at 6:51 PM. Reason : ]

UT Austin's is pretty cool. And lets see if I can post the Stanford one without it turning into a red x.[Edited on March 3, 2011 at 9:32 PM. Reason : .]
3/3/2011 9:32:26 PM
Ferrum looks like some war of the worlds walker with an impressive bell-song. This is not a negative.
3/3/2011 10:12:13 PM
ole miss bell tower looks like something from centennial campusdo not like
3/3/2011 10:17:05 PM
From what I recall, you can go up into Furman's and UC Berkeley's. I remember Furman's feeling small up close, though. It's kindof weird how many of these I've seen... considering how few universities I've visited.Other than State's, I really like the classic brick look of the Ole Miss tower.
