My fiance and I will be going to Iceland for our honeymoon. Any recommendations on what to do/where to stay? Also wondering whether we should rent a car or if we can mostly get our moneys worth visiting places closer to Rekyjavik where we will probably be staying. We will be there for 8 days at the beginning of August.

Go get naked in a hot spring while your hearts beat like jungle drums.

I would rent a car. The Ring Road is one of the great driving attractions in the world. It's about ~830 miles long and travels the entire circumference of the island.

This actually sounds like a pretty awesome trip

If youre spending 8 days there, I would def recommend renting a car. The island is beautiful and frankly, Rekyjavik isn't a very big city.

"http://www.arctictrucks-experience.com/"He must not be married. If you do that for your honeymoon, unless you have a very special wife, you might not make it through married. While awesome, that's something for a different trip.

Yeah as fun as that looks I'm not sure we will be able to do that. And unfortunately we are pretty much on a budget so renting something expensive is probably out of the limit. We will probably look into renting a car for a few days and the rest of the time do more local things or tours based out of Rekyjavik. I never realized renting a car was so expensive.

How much is it to rent a car?
3/1/2011 5:18:24 PM
Seems like its rather expensive, especially if we want to actually rent a car to enjoy the roads we would have to rent a 4x4 as the majority of the cooler roads are offroad only. I think we might be better off staying in Rekyjavik and taking day trips, there seem to be some guided tours that have gotten pretty good reviews and are small group based.

not trying to be a jerk, but it seems like you'd research stuff to do/place to stay before definitively saying you're going to a place. not that iceland doesn't sound awesome, just seems like unusual ordering

We had done a lot of research into general things to do, the sites, etc. We didn't go into specifics however because we were worried with plane tickets increasing in price we wouldnt be able to get tickets and didnt want to get our hearts set on anything. We just recently were able to get a reallly good deal on tickets though, so now its full on planning time.

how much were your tickets
3/2/2011 1:35:57 PM
^from someone I know who went to Iceland recently (might still be there? it's a friend of my wife so I dono) it seems like ~3 months out tickets are generally $750-$775 if you don't mind a redeye out of charlotte.

^^We paid 570 a ticket including fees and taxes flying out of Boston, we will pick up some last minute cheap tickets to Boston probably. Considering all I had seen to date was 7-800$ and tickets are supposed to go up because of the fuel situation I figured that was something we couldnt turn down.

Thats a good price, would have been even better if it was from RDU!I'd like to go to Iceland sometime, I'm assuming sometime in the summer is the best weather time to go. I want to hang out with Bjork

Bring a computer to keep up to date with your Starcraft.

^^Yeah hopefully August will be nice. Seems we will miss out on some things though like the optimal times to see the northern lights.^Yeah one of the nice things is there is actually a big tournament going on in Iceland at the time that I'll be participating in for a few days while we are there.Just kidding.
