I made the mistake of purchasing a 60" Mitsubishi DLP which broke almost two months ago (after 11 months of service), and Mitsubishi seems unable/unwilling to fix it. I'd like to go ahead and replace the TV while I wait on the other one to get fixed, but can't spend $texas on it. I don't have any Plasma/LCD allegiances, but it needs to be around 60", I would like to spend ~$1200 or less and I won't buy an Emerson or some other crappy off brand.

Any recommendations?

Panasonic does make a solid plasma - it's what we got. And of course it comes with a buttload of options to hookup and reroute audio.

Next on my list would be a Samsung or Sony LCD - and in the 60" range that's gonna cost 'ya.

no way you are going to get a quality plasma/lcd 60" for 1200.

55" is possible if you find a hella deal, 50" you can get a pretty high end set for 1200

^^^ I was basing that number on this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sharp+-+AQUOS+/+60%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/1348076.p?id=1218252650535&skuId=1348076

is it a piece of crap or decent enough?

^^ you said under 1000. That's 1300+tax = 1400 which is 40% more than you said was your budget.

There are several good 55" sets at 1299 and I'm sure a handful of 60" ones. Sharps are decent, check avsforum for reviews

That particular TV was/is available for just under $1200 shipped, that's why I was using it as an example. NTM I could even buy it from Best Buy B&M using one of those 10% off coupons and get it for $1250 after tax, meaning it would meet the criteria of ~$1200

^I'm a fucking idiot, I totally misread your OP . Yeah $1299 seems to be the new sweet spot for mid-range 55" sets. I still don't know about a 60" though. >55" is getting to the point where the pixel density is so low, you really start to lose the advantages of HD.

Hell, even on my 50" I can see motion artifacts and video imperfections from the couch 8' away. I can't imagine how much more pronounced that would be on a 60" set.

Reading about the actual set quality, versus buying a piece of consumer electronics based on the almost totally worthless "specs".

Image Quality (ghosting, smoothing, tearing, artifact compensation, et al), color accuracy and uniformity, backlight quality (edge vs. full plane led lighting, local dimming, etc), I/O support and firmware support, color/brightness/contrast adjustability, the industrial design of the unit (materials, finish, weight, button/port/cord locations), warranty and manufacturer support reputation.

That hits the main points

If this is important, just buy a sony. I know that almost a joke, but seriously. At a certain point in your life your time is just more valuable than critiquing every little thing about 18 different models and manufacturers. Wait for a sale, whatever. Just grab whatever is one rung below the top of the consumer grade ladder & you'll be happy. For your price range, learn to live with something smaller (say, 52, 55) & just be done with it.

Yeah, instead of doing any research(or asking the advice of other losers that are already knowledgable on the subject) just buy the biggest name brand and be done with it.

Great advice.
