I'm looking at moving into a dodge magnum.I am really only interested in the SRT-8 variety, but price may dictate otherwise unless I find a deal, or if there is too good of a deal on the lower RT model.I know all about the interior and peoples opinions on it as far as the lower models go. I have only seen pictures, but not been in the SRT-8.I'm interested in knowledge on the motors.Things to look out for, common maintenance, service intervals, and life expectancy. Also simple mod stuff.K, and go.

Well they are 8 cylinders and have 4 valves per cylinder[Edited on January 27, 2011 at 7:16 PM. Reason : jki]

dodge 5.7 and 6.1 Hemi engines 5.7 will shut down 4 cylinders when cruising on the highway and reactivate upon acceleration.6.1 will not.

Might as well get the SRT8 if you are going to get one used. Go all out. Don't hold back.

The SRT-8 is what I'm really looking at.big motor, decent power, huge brakes, upgraded audio, nicer interior, lots of storage

get the G8

The 5.7 is said to have 345-390 (model year depending) and gets 20 mpg.The 6.1 is said to have 425hp from the factory and get 20mpg.My 1.8 is said to have around 300whp and gets 25mpg.The 6.1 weighs 4260lbsThe 1.8 weighs 2900lbsI see needing the 6.1 for getting this car's fat ass out of the way.

those 20 mpg numbers are best case i've you're getting 25 in a car that should get 30 you're going to get 15 or less in a hemi.just my $.02

my car's factory fresh dyno was 170hp. I'm doing over 300 now, with a built motor, manual trans, and bigger turbo. The factory from wast getting 20mpg on average. Getting 25 on average now is nice. All highway is around 30, and all city is about 20.Reading some 6.1 forums, a lot of people see 25 for highway mileage. I can live with that.

I get 20+ MPG all day long on the highway in my 5.7In the city....driving it like I stole it, I get 16-18 MPGI added a HID headlights, a CAI and bought the Diablo Sport for my Charger R/T. Well worth the upgrades. If I have a little extra cash, I will add an exhaust.

with regular maintenance, what is the life expectancy on one of these motors?
1/31/2011 10:55:42 AM
^about twice the life the transmission, 3 times the life of the electronics, and 4 times the length of the interrior. In simple terms, about the life of 2 sets of tires.
1/31/2011 12:55:47 PM
tires last about 15k miles for me, so I am going to doubt all of that post.
1/31/2011 3:11:56 PM
15k miles is a long ass time for FWD with that kind of torque.
1/31/2011 3:33:04 PM
I drive mostly stop/go and highway. Neither of which kill tires.I also have 3 sets of wheels for the car, so the sticky only see light use and the all seasons get the normal wear.

I don't know if the design is even remotely the same, but I will say the SRT-8 version of the 300C has fantastic seats.

I have the 5.7 and get 18-20mpg around town, 25mpg highway. About to trip 110,000 miles and zero engine troubles so far. Only routine maint.
