In nature I experienced -2F.Few months ago at work we have a big freezer storage that is cooled to -80C (-112F). I walked in with jeans and long sleeve shirt just to try it out. My skin began burning after about 15 seconds, but skin heat loss was almost instantaneous. My jeans below knees was all tightened up and kept cold for good 5 min. 4 giant fans propelled -112F cold air into the room, so temperature is probably lower (as in wind/fan chill).[Edited on January 21, 2011 at 11:13 AM. i think it got down to 2° once in the C'ville area when i was up there

i spent a winter in Iowa, where one or two nights during the worst part the temperature got down to -30F. the wind chill was -60F or worse. i think this was a record winter; the authorities continually warned people not to go outside at all. you could die.for the rest of the winter over a couple months, the temperature would get down to anywhere from 0F to -20F and the wind chill down as low as -30F to -40F or so.I worked at a local Target third shift stocker, and rode a motorcycle into work at 11pm and left at 7am. I rode on snow and ice. It was only about 2 miles to work, but it really sucked. I bought the bike in the summer. At that time, though, I really wished I had bought a car.[Edited on January 21, 2011 at 11:27 AM. Reason : ]

No idea, I was only like 5 and not exactly checking the temp when I was living in alaska. I do remember my plastic transformers costume disintegrating as I walked up to my first house trick-or-treating on year.

Backpacking in the mountain in January, a thermometer on my pack was reading approximatly 8-9 deg F.
1/21/2011 11:39:42 AM
I was skiing at Snowshoe one year when it was like -5 F, but the windchill was in the -30 F. You pretty had to ski down once, take the lift back up, and then go in and warm up.I remember my face mask falling down to my neck by I didn't know it because it was so cold. My stepdad looked over at me and saw that my nose had turned black. We skied quickly down to the little cabin at the base of the run and had ski patrol make me some hot chocolate and let my nose get back to normal before heading back up.I could have lost my nose to frost bite!!

lol not much. Probably about 15 degrees F or something. Coldest place I've ever been in a winter was North Carolina.
1/21/2011 11:59:38 AM
-40C/-40F in Canada only remembered the temp cuz we converted it from C to F and got the same thing... Also figured out that my ski gear had temp ratings and they were not -40C
1/21/2011 12:05:15 PM
I was working in Ohio one time when it got down to -5ºF and the wind was blowing a steady 30mph. After being outside all day, I never thought I'd warm back up.
1/21/2011 12:08:49 PM
As best I can remember, the coldest weather I've been out in is -1°F. I've been in colder freezers, but definitely not -112°F.
1/21/2011 12:09:34 PM
I went to Maine for work in January of 2009. I went skiing while I was up there, it was -10F at the base of the mountain. Froze my ass off that night.

I am in Dexter, MN right now on a trip for work. The current outside temp. is -9 F with windchills as low as -30 F. New records for me, but I will not be outside working today.

-5FInside a huge warehouse freezer.
1/21/2011 1:20:01 PM
The coldest temperature I've experienced was in 2006 at Killington, VT. Around 6pm the first night of our trip there it was -14°F. Going outside to get firewood was a bitch, lol. I'm not sure how much colder it got overnight, but it was single digits the following morning when we started skiing. The coldest wind chill I think I've experienced was -40-30°F at Snowshoe, WV back around 2002. In the middle of the day it was only 0°F and while sunny that wind was a bitch. I think I had to go inside every 45 minutes or so to warm up. Snowshoe's a pretty damn cold place. It's almost always colder there than my trips to the Rockies/Sierras, altitude be damned I guess.I always find it rather humorous to ski all day with a water bottle in your jacket pocket and then after a while you pull it out and it's frozen solid [Edited on January 21, 2011 at 1:25 PM. Reason : cold ftw]
1/21/2011 1:21:21 PM
-20F or so in a walk in freezer...camped for extended periods in upper 20s low 30s

-14 at night at Snowshoe WV

I don't understand the rolly eyes and trolling accusations hurled at the OP. If you know the OP at all, he is not one to lie/joke-lie/troll on TWW. And why is it hard to believe?Record for me:Place: Clinton, NYTemp: 14FWith windchill: ~ -10F

about 0F with wind chill
1/21/2011 4:11:52 PM
going skiiing at Lake Placid this weekend. Sunday's high is -2F, low is -18F.
1/21/2011 4:18:39 PM
^^^Maybe he's being completely honest. It's just hard to believe. That's 200°F degrees below room temperature. It's 100°F below what anybody else is claiming in this thread. Annoyingly, I can't find a frostbite calculator that will go below -50°F, but at that temp and wind speed 30km/hr, you're looking at frostbite within 3 minutes. It's probably seconds at -112°F. I mean, damn, how would you even operate a freezer at that temperature? Also, the whole fan thing. A heating system trying to maintain room temperature could be putting out air that is over 100°F at the vent, right? That doesn't mean it's 100°F in the room being heated.
1/21/2011 4:45:39 PM
I believe -30's when I lived in Nebraska. I'm not sure if that was with the wind chill or not(I was 9). But it was COLD and my hands cracked and bled because they were so dry. Eeks.
1/21/2011 4:47:26 PM
near Pittsburgh, PA: it got down to something ridiculous like -15 F at night one winter when I was in my teens. We had a bitch of a time keeping the horses' water buckets clear- after that my barn got electric heaters. School was canceled because of the temperatures. in lab- we have a -80 C freezer I've burned my hands on quite a few times- now I can handle boxes and such without gloves because I killed all the cold pain receptors in my hands.

-15 a few years ago out in SLC

-6F without the wind chill in Rochester NY.. My car door was frozen shut that day.. this weekend has a prediction of -5F.. At least I have free heat at home

-13' F (-20' wind chill) in Denver, December '09 (and Denver's not even that cold typically)I did the whole, throw boiling water and watch it turn to snow trick... pretty cool.
1/21/2011 8:21:30 PM
Dang, some cold ass temps you people have been through!Walk in freezer at a cafteria for me as well, probably -2 or something. I actually tried mopping it, that obviously didn't work out too well.I did a camping trip when it was about 22 degrees with a wind chill bringing it down in the single digits. I woke up with icicles in my hair.

-19F air temperature (not wind chill) in Albany, NY
1/22/2011 1:10:15 AM
-58F without windchill but I've spent more time in temps colder than -40F than I care to remember. I'd guess a total exposure time over the past 8 years in AK to be in the hundreds of hours outdoors.
1/22/2011 1:15:36 AM
depends on what you mean by experienced... liquid nitrogen at work, burns like a motherelse wise, probably -10F
1/22/2011 2:56:51 AM
^ Yeah same here... I poured about a teaspoon of liquid nitrogen into my bare hand as a sophomore in a physics class Prof brought liquid N to class and did a few cool things... then I was like, can I pour it into my hand? He is like, that's not advisable, and I wouldn't be responsible if something happened. I was like, cool, let me do it!I poured it into my right hand, and it felt like mercury in how it would stick together and roll around in my cupped palm. I moved my hand left and right quickly a few times for a few seconds (so it wasn't touching the same place the whole time), and then I dropped it on the floor. It was boiling when it was in my hand.At the end of class, the prof poured the remaining liquid N into the hallway outside the class, but not in the middle of the hallway, but along the walls on both sides. It bubbled as it rolled down the hallway and disappeared after a few meters.

-60F, though I've been out XC skiing at -55F, Fairbanks, AK. Camped at -20F in Colorado.
