Didn't want to make a thread specifically for Coachella, but figured a general festival thread is warranted. Coachella 2011 lineup got released early this AM:

Nothin' crazy enough to make me trek out to California, but still a damn solid lineup. What say you guys? Definitely would see Arcade Fire, Kanye, The Strokes as headliners

god damn. Kings of fucking Leon?

there's a handful of really, really shitty acts on the Friday so, but at least they kept the worst contained to opening day.

Bonnaroo got KoL'd last year, it was Coach's turn this year. Getting KoL'd is sort of like the RickRoll'd of festival lineups, except it's for real.

Who else on Friday do you think is shitty? I think Friday's undercard is pretty rich.

LOL @ KoL'd

as far as who i think is shitty, or just wouldn't have ANY interest in seeing:

Brandon Flowers
Aquabats
Sasha
Robyn
Cut Copy (who i fucking loathe, yet everyone else seems to adore)
Lauryn Hill

and a couple of others. most of them, though, are like cut copy and robyn where i can acknowledge they're good acts overall (as in good draws), they just happen to be bands/artists i don't really like.

But, Friday also has a TON of great stuff on the under-card, as you said, and that helps balance it out.

Mumford & Sons need to die in a fire. have a feeling they're gonna get a lot of "big" slots in festivals this year.

^ Yeah, they are so high because its a "reunion." Possibly a one-off reunion. People seem to be excited about them.

Also, I love Cut Copy and agree with tschudi about Mumford.

since I'm considering going to Bonnaroo this year I really hope the lineup has a lot of the bands listed in the undercard here. imo the Coachella lineup is always way better, fresher and more progressive but I never have the money it would take to do it

yeah that's a sick lineup. i'd have a tough time choosing between crystal castles, cut copy, warpaint, tame impala, !!!, pains, here we go magic, TA, morning benders, and rural alberta advantage.

saturday and sunday look pretty top heavy, but having seen animal collective at an outdoor festival in the past, i think i would pass.

I don't understand, do you guys just not like catchy pop songs?

How can anyone dislike songs like "Lights and Music" and "So Haunted?"

Oh, and re: the Coachella vs. Bonnaroo thing, I've talked to a bunch of different people who have been to both and nearly every single one of them says the same thing: the lineups at Coachella are more enticing, but they have more fun at Bonnaroo. It's just that the atmosphere at Bonnaroo is better or more fun for whatever reason. I think a part of it is the fact that at Bonnaroo, music typically plays until 5 AM at night/morning, whereas Coachella wraps up around 1 AM each night. It's usually the big electronic music that plays really late at Bonnaroo, and while that might sound exhausting, it leads to some pretty incredible late nights that Coachella doesn't have.

^ If you're interested, I know that Bonnaroo has a volunteer program that gives you essentially a free ticket to Bonnaroo. You have to work three 6-hour shifts (and if you're a Pod volunteer like I was, you just sit there for six hours and help people with repetitive silly questions, usually just pointing people towards "Centeroo"; it's really easy), so you might miss some of the music you want to see. But they let you list three bands/artists that you can't miss and they won't schedule you during those artists' sets. Also, one or two of your shifts might be on the Wednesday before the festival, the Thursday before music starts, or the Sunday night after all the music is done. Just letting anyone who is interested know about this option.

You do have to apply to be a volunteer, though, and they don't take everyone. I will not be volunteering again this year because I didn't like missing even some of the music last year, even though I had an unforgettable time. I was lukewarm about it when I first decided to go, but I won't hesitate to say it ended up being a pretty life-changing experience.

That Sasquatch lineup is pretty decent. Headliners blow pretty hard, though. Modest Mouse might be cool but they're hit or miss live and they're not headliner-worthy IMO.

Bonnaroo lineup announcement is next Tuesday, the 15th. Five of the bigger acts are most likely Arcade Fire, Widespread Panic, Black Keys, Robert Plant, and My Morning Jacket. The top band on the bill is still completely a mystery, though.

Man, I WISH Daft Punk was there, but it's looking pretty unlikely.

Massive Attack and/or The Strokes will also probably be there. Big Boi, Black Star, and Robyn have all confirmed themselves.

^^What's funny about that N.O. Jazzfest lineup, the initial reports accidentally had Tom Waits playing instead of Tom Jones haha...Big difference. They all fixed it an hour or two afterwards.

the headliners for sasquatch are enough to make it not worth the effort. I had planned on going out there this year. meet up with some friends, and the venue looks awesome.

i hate going to festivals where i'm not dead set on at least two headliners.

also, with the information that's coming out of the 'roo camp, it's also pretty disappointing.

i had hopes sky high for the tenth anniversary.

maybe since im so close this year ill just hop up to ACL.

^You're right. But I'm gonna go to Bonnaroo again this year anyway...the thing to consider is this: Looking back on past Bonnaroo lineups, there is usually no more than one, MAYBE two, headliners I'd be excited to see (only referring to the top three bands on the bill as headliners). The undercard is where it's at. And with this being the tenth anniversary, and we can already see that two of their three headliners are relatively inexpensive, there is no reason that the undercard this year shouldn't be one of the best Bonnaroo has ever had. What that all entails, who knows, we'll find out Tuesday.

the best festival memories i have generally have nothing to do with the headliners, the gems are always on the secondary stages, usually involving catching a band on the rise. getting close enough to the main stage can be a tremendously exhausting day long process(one which i swore never to do again after pushing for radiohead at the roo in 06). its nice when the headliners are awesome, but the real fun at the roo happens away from the mainstages.

to those of you complaining about the heat and other elements, thats part of the experience, get a camper or rv, having ac and a comfortable place to hide a few hours a day makes the whole weekend that much more bearable physically.

I think the Bonnaroo lineup is pretty great (only thing they fucked up on was the electronic music, and they fucked that up pretty bad). Here's all the stuff I'm pretty excited to see (I bought my ticket a few months ago):

* Arcade Fire
* The Black Keys
* Buffalo Springfield feat Richie Furay, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Rick Rosas, Joe Vitale (!!!)
* My Morning Jacket
* Lil Wayne
* The Strokes
* Dr. John and The Original Meters performing Desitively Bonnaroo
* Explosions in the Sky
* Beirut (mostly just curious about this one)
* Big Boi
* Robyn
* Deerhunter
* Bootsy Collins & the Funk University
* The Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band
* Mavis Staples
* The Walkmen
* Best Coast
* Dãm-Funk
* The Drums
* The Black Angels
* School of Seven Bells
* Wavves
* !!!
* Junip
* Sharon Van Etten
* Omar Souleyman
* Twin Shadow
* Kylesa
* Man Man
* Phosphorescent

This is enough for me that I'm really excited and think it's gonna be a blast. Also, I think it should be noted that there are a lot of late additions normally, especially comedy and electronic acts. One late addition will probably be Black Star, whom Talib Kweli himself confirmed via Twitter. I have no idea why they aren't on the initial lineup.

Also, at first glance, I thought Coachella's lineup was better than Bonnaroo, but the more I look at it, Bonnaroo's top half destroys Coachella's. Coach's headliners are better, but...Bonnaroo has The Strokes all the way down at 11th (they're a co-headliner at Coach), Lil Wayne at 7th, and NEIL FUCKING YOUNG at 5th for chrissake. That's pretty front-loaded. And there's still a lot of stuff I want to see on the lower undercard.
