Lately I've been making berry smoothies, but halfway through drinking they get kinda frothy/thick/seemingly no longer cold even though they are and I have to stop drinking it because of the gross consistency.Currently I just dump in the frozen berries (sometimes a mix of frozen and fresh), maybe some yogurt, and some fruit juice. Try to blend, if it won't, add more fruit juice until it blends. What am I doing wrong? What's your process?

^^what are your ratios? i make a quick one each morning. it's not like it's super healthy, but it tastes good.handful of frozen mixed berries 1/2 banana1 large spoonful of plain greek yogurt1/2 cup low fat milk1/3 cup OJit usually fills up a pint glass and i drink it pretty fast, long before it has a chance to warm up.

Mine might seem a little extreme but it seems to be working. At my most recent physical the doctor said that I "have the stats of an Olympic athlete...who isn't doping" and that she had "never seen triglycerides or bad cholesterol so low since she has been a doctor". The only thing I'd changed about my diet between this physical and last is the smoothie, so I'll gamble and draw a line through that single data point. I eat this daily, drinking 8oz in the morning and 16oz in the evening after working out and running.8oz soy milk1 tsp local honey1 tsp almond butter1 tsp liquid multi vitamin (blue bonnet brand)1 tbsp olive oil 1/4 an avocado1/4 red pepper1/3 bag of frozen mixed berries (black, blue, strawberry, raspberry)1 banana 1 small red apple1 kiwi1 clove garlic1 handful red grapes1 handful kale1 handful spinanch1 handful baby carrotsTo some it may sound disgusting. But, really ,with all that sugar from the fruits and the honey it is hard to taste anything other than delicious. The garlic adds only a tiny kick but other than that you barely even taste it. This recipe normally makes me about 40oz or so.

Do you eat breakfast in addition to your 8oz in the morning? Or is that your breakfast?
3/25/2014 11:32:04 PM
I drink it in addition to a bowl if cereal. I eat a bowl of flax and oat cereal every morning but only eat the serving size. Serving sizes are usually 1/2 to 3/4 cup for most cereals while the typical cereal bowl holds up to 2 cups. So cereal in addition to the smoothie is much less than it sounds.

Ha, well this is still relevant to my interests. Been doing spinach, greek yogurt, bananas, and peanut butter. Need to throw some whey in there.

synapse, try adding in a banana. It makes everything smoother. When I run out of bananas, I run into the same problem you described.

Geppetto, that recipe seems more like a juice. Besides your berries, what else is frozen? and how do you maintain the smoothie consistency if you drink the bulk of it at night, or the next day?]
3/27/2014 8:51:15 AM
Mason jar 1/3 full with frozen fruit, fill with baby greens (jam them in there), and top off with collagen powder and coconut milk. Blend.

Wifey and I are looking to get into smoothies this spring/summer. I've done protein smoothies in the past...but I think we're trying to go a more healthy route (more veggies). I use to do just a basic banana/strawberry/blueberry with orange juice or milk...and with a scoop of vanilla whey it was quite tasty. What kind of healthy recipes do you guys have that are also yummy? I know everyone is putting kale in their smoothies these days...and while I like kale, I'm not convinced it tastes good in a smoothie...but I'm willing to try.
3/27/2014 11:09:23 AM
ive had a few kale smoothies. if you put pineapple or something similar in there, you can't even taste it.
3/27/2014 12:51:29 PM
Raw kale gives me heartburn, but if I get the baby kale salad mix at Sam's club I can have that in a smoothie no problems. That and Organic Girl super greens are my favorite things for a smoothie. If you want a greens powder to add then amazing grass is a good option. The chocolate doesn't taste like greens at all (half cocoa powder, blend with milk and fruit to add sweetness), or the plain greens powder has twice as much greens because there isn't cocoa powder in there.

I would like to share my disappointment that nothing in this thread has mentioned Ginger root yet. Probably the best thing I put in any of my smoothies.
3/27/2014 1:22:42 PM
I have some ginger and will try that tomorrow morning. Do you put a chunk in or grate it into the blender?
3/27/2014 1:24:23 PM
^^funny you should say that. I bought ginger on Sunday and actually put it in my smoothie yesterday. While I believe I put in too much, it was good overall. It gave the smoothie an overall tropical feel to it, almost like an orange juice. Regarding the juice/texture comment, great questions!Since I am still blending the vegetables rather than pressing them and discarding the skins it still gets that smoothie consistency. But the frozen berries are really what seals it. As to why it doesn't lose the texture, I had never thought of that but it is a very good question. I store it in my fridge in a nalgene so it's likely a combination of very little oxygen and the fact that my fridge is super cold.
