I wanted to do it for my dog, because she was some sort of Chow/Lab and possibly Weimaraner mix, but never go around to it.

Honestly, for only $80 bucks it wouldn't be a bad idea, consdering all the stupid shit I spend my money on.

i probably wouldn't get my dogs tested unless i won the lottery or something. i did pay for a dna test for myself w/ http://www.23andme.com though. i still have a few more weeks before i get the results. you get ancestry as well as health/carrier status stuff.

^Yea, sucks. Her stomach was twisted or some shit. Caused the gas to build up and cut off blood flow. She was a pretty big dog and about 11 years old, but they said her body temp was down to 95, she needed emergency surgery which would have to be done in Wilson or Cary, would cost $1-$2k and was less than 50/50 on her making it through the surgery.

Worst part was I got up ass early to go to work and she was just whining a little bit. By 10 am she was gone. Never got to see her, or be there when she died. Hell nobody from the family was, as my wife had to drop her off on the way to work to see what was wrong.

There was a report on one of the shows on WUNC about these. I think they used three different services and got back three different results. The consensus was that these services aren't very reliable, but are getting there.

My girlfriend's family took one of these tests, seemed pretty "all across the board" to me.

Heard the same from other sources, and the reports of the tests just not being reliable.

So I would never really feel motivated to do this for my dog, even though we're not sure entirely what she is (beagle, hound is what we got).

Be careful with these tests... 23 and Me and a few of the other top ones don't use all of the same markers to determine their results, so one place might say you're at a higher risk of developing such and such while another will say you're not at a higher risk. Also, regarding carrier status, just be aware of the stuff this could bring up for you. If you're interested, google Dr. Bruce Korf on the subject - he has some great viewpoints.

i had it done...they came to school and gave students a discount .....my dog, who for the longest time was a "shepherd mix" is in fact part shiba inu, part finnish spitz, and part english red and white setter. i can definately see shiba inu and spitz.....not too sure about the setter though

After having had this done, I am conclusively not a dog.


But my brother had it done where they freeze the DNA to bring the dog back after life, or so they claim. I don't know about DNA testing on dogs....kind of a shady practice if you ask me. AKC is a mafia gayer and poorer than the AQHA.

i think my dog is a coyote/shepherd mix... could this test tell me if it is?

Have to be careful though... a lot of the tests are just designed to prove lineage, and not to figure out breeds.

The trick is you tell them it's a purebred and then go, "OMG WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT A PUREBRED!!!" when you get the results

yeah, i'm taking the risk for diseases or whatever with a grain of salt, but it's still very interesting. i really doubt i'll be able to find anything, but several blood relatives on my mom's side have autoimmune disorders, as do i, soooo anything pertaining to that would be neat. they make you agree 3 or so times that you actually do want to view your carrier status for xxxxx & read a bunch of stuff before they'll show it to you.

if i have the breast cancer gene, i'm chopping them the hell off. no one in my family has had breast cancer though (knock on wood).

Do you have picture of your dog? The best we've come up with is that my dog is a finnish spitz mix of some sort (also looks simular to a shiba inu) I would be interested in seeing how it compared to your dog of simular breeds.
