for wesley you have to start it in buffy i think. it was even more of an evolution from that point. at the start of Angel he was already at least pretending to be somewhat of a badass.

I'm excited to start watching Breaking Bad when I have some time; hopefully before the new season starts. I'll pick Peggy from Mad Men.

"russian henchmen" is my favorite example of redundancy

Now that I'm thinking about the question, Edmund Blackadder may be the only choice for this question.

Worst evolution goes to Carla in Scrubs. She went from a strong woman who sometimes brought the funny to a super weak character who was nothing more than Turk's baby mama

Nah I'd say worst is Stewie in family guy from megalomaniacal baby to raging homo baby.

i don't think omar evolved at all. heck, wasn't one of the underlying themes of the wire "the more things change, the more they stay the same"

I'll second Wes on Buffy/Angel

The white guy in the wire, and that black kid in the wire. Hell, a bunch of wire characters evolved.

any discussion of character development should begin with The Andy Griffith show and end with King of the Hill with only Seinfeld in the middle

the big thing with the wire is not how much any one character evolves, but the comparison between those that do evolve and those who never move

for example, carver doesn't evolve a ton, but herc never evolves at all, which makes carver's subtle adjustments look like leaps

Bubbles in "The Wire"

I'd sooner doubt a basic fact of arithmetic than this

Edit: came here to post this, read the thread post-facto and obviously this has already been pointed out

Sophie Chapman from Peep Show:
Normal co-worker love interest -> Pregnant druggie alcoholic ex-wife.

Lindsay Weir in Freaks and Geeks?

Ryan Howard in The Office, although that isn't really the greatest evolution.

^^ Cricket wasn't so much a deevolution as a spectacular fall in all of 2 or 3 episodes. Within that time frame he'd left the church, and then promptly became penniless. Frank has devolved slowly into what he is today.

Frank: "I get to be the troll??"

Charlie: "Of course! Who else would be the troll?!"

see i dont know if Bubbles really evolved that much. character stayed the same at heart but he finally got the opportunity to change his life. he went from a good hearted addict to a good hearted recovering addict. he made numerous attempts to get straight but events always through him back on the crooked path.

Someone on Deadwood needs to be nominated.

I'll go ahead and vote Al Swearengen because I can't think of anyone else.

I disagree.. he went from being a bad ass in Seasons 1 and 2 to becoming a whiny bitch. Last season tried to revive him.

^ Evolution doesn't mean something necessarily gets better, just that it has changed gradually over time.

Jack evolved from being the confident leader and man of science, into the disillusioned follower. His evolution continued, eventually making him into the determined hero and man of faith.
And then he evolved from a spirit into a light beam or something.
LOST. (dunnnnnnn)

Michelle in Full House.

She started off as such a quiet character, but then came to dominate the show with such catch phrases as "You got it, dude" and "Aus-cream".
