I need someone to go thru and check the wiring of my durango's audio system. It keeps cutting off and on.

are the speakers grounded to chassis? j/w 'cause that's the sign of a POS sound system

I have absolutely no idea. Got the speakers 3 or 4 years ago, Circuit City installed them. Got the head unit and amp about 2 years ago, and Best Buy installed that. I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing rather than another store to check it out.

when does it cut out?? after you've been playing it hard for 30 mins? when you hit a bump? randomly? how long has it been doing this ? did you change anything recently? why havent' you taken it back to bb? they should have lifetime warranty on installs. i would take a look but it's too cold to be goin in all willy nilly with the trouble shooting[Edited on December 16, 2010 at 11:51 PM. Reason : .]

Well, I drove it most recently on Thursday, so here's what happened then. I'm drivin down the road, about 35-40mph, and the radio cuts off (no bumps in the road, nothin). A few minutes later, it cuts back on. Process repeated all day on different roads with varying frequency. Also there's an audible high pitched noise coming from the speakers when the radio cuts off. Its done this before, a few weeks ago travelling up to oxford nc the radio did the same thing. Also, I went to change the station using the dial and the radio cut off. (It has a remote). Honestly, the reason why I've not taken it back to BB is because I just didn't want to go through the (perceived) hassle of doing that. (Read, I'm fucking lazy and was hoping it was an anomaly.) What else would you like to know that would be helpful to the situation?

bump for advice/help.

From the description, the radio is bad. Most likely an internal short somewhere.
12/19/2010 7:51:56 PM
It didn't do it today. Both days it did the behavior described it was raining.
12/19/2010 9:54:46 PM
Yeah, definitely sounds like the head unit.
12/20/2010 10:12:04 AM
damnit, I was hoping it was a wiring/grounding issue.
12/21/2010 8:16:05 AM
Well, that's entirely possible...but since it does it without there being bumps in the road, etc, then i'm inclined to say it's a bad head unit. Pull it out and check all of the wires. There's not that many back there, and the only ones you really need to look at are the red, yellow, and black wires that are coming out of the back of the radio. Most all of the others are speaker wires. (Blue/white is your power antenna wire, and the orange/white likely isnt needed or hooked to anything).
