The owner's manual says that I should use DOT 3 SAE J1703. I have a couple liters of ATE Super Blue (Dot 4) and I was curious if there would be any harm in using that instead. ATE states that it exceeds SAE J1703 properties for DOT 3 brake fluid, so would I be okay with flushing and replacing the current brake fluid with this DOT 4 ATE?I don't know why I'm second guessing this, I've always been told that Dot 3 and Dot 4 are interchangeable...[Edited on December 9, 2010 at 1:14 AM. U should be fine. Just make sure to drain the dot 3 well.

No second guess necessary...DOT 3 and DOT 4 are entirely interchangeable. You don't even need to drain the DOT 3...just for moisture removal purposes. As you're flushing, oh hell, you're golden.

DOT 4 is backwards compatible with DOT 3 but I wouldn't use DOT 3 if the manual calls for DOT 4

DOT 4 and 3 can mix fine. Just don't mix 5 with those.
