I can accept that this call wasn't the only reason we lost the game and that even if we got the ball back the chances of scoring were slim, especially with our receiver's butterfingers

But . . .

getting the right call would have made the loss a lot easier to stomach, now I'm just left wondering what "could have" happened. I also kinda wish TOB had been on the field and in the Cherry's face (not that it would have accomplished anything).

^^^ that, like the pics in the other thread stop short, dont show the whole play, he rolls down the pile and it looks like he extended his arms as he was close to the ground... but as I said in the other thread, State shouldnt have let this shit team be within 2 TDs, Ron Cherry is way way way down on the list of reasons why they lost

Him being a terrible ref isn't dependent on the loss being his fault. Whether we lose by 7 or 70, we should still be able to count on a ref to call a fair game. The sad thing is I honestly don't think he has it out for us. I think he's just that incompetent.

I honestly don’t believe the officials were calling against NC State. In fact, I think Ron Cherry himself was surprised it was a first down. My problem with Ron Cherry is that he is incompetent and I hate watching any game that he officiates. If I am officiating that game and I see the player stopped for no gain, I am going to spot the ball at the exact same location as the start of the 4th down play. I am not going to randomly guess the spot and risk rewarding a team with a first down when they clearly did not earn it.

And it also seems to be the viewpoint of nearly every here (at least, that I have seen). I don't think anyone is seriously blaming the loss on Cherry...but Cherry is still the worst ref in the ACC, and all of yesterday was a testament to that. A few calls went our way, and a few went their way. I don't want any calls going any way (within reason, of course).

I wouldn't even wish Ron Cherry to ref a tar hole game.

Except he didn't extend his arms. Go back and watch the replay. I actually commented to those watching with me "it's 4th down, why not extend your arms, if you fumble it, no big deal because you didn't get the 1st down without doing it anyway".

Ron Cherry had our back. I specifically remember him calling out the Maryland clock operator because they kept starting the clock early when we were trying to drive near the end of the second quarter.

Ron Cherry reminds me of some of the old, worthless professors I used to have in Chem E back at State. They were horrible at teaching, but kept their jobs because they had their tenure I assume. The other professors and students just accepted that they sucked. I see Ron Cherry in the same view. The other officials and higher ups in the ACC know he sucks, but no one wants to do anything about it.

I cannot stand the way he calls a holding penalty. He gets all retarded with his elbow/arm motion.

I can't stand how he handles explaining the outcome of a review. He sounds like he has absolutely no idea what is going on and just says random shit. I don't think he ever says the key "ruling on the field stands"/"ruling overturned" phrases.

I'd love to know our W-L record with him as a ref... if there's a site that has a simple layout to get access to which ref officiated.

And if you look at that large 1st down picture above and especially in that video you'll notice that the head linesman/line judge looks down and takes a pretty significant step forward as the Maryland player falls slightly forward. That's where he runs out to spot the ball. The video could be at an angle, the picture definitely is, but it looks like the linesman is almost a full yard forward of where the runner is prior to taking that step.

Meh. I don't really care about that one play. It shouldn't have come down to that and we would probably have thrown a pick had we got the ball back anyway.
