Do they usually have persimmons this time of year or am I going to have to go to Grand Asia for that?
11/19/2010 3:08:03 PM
i pick them off the trees at work[Edited on November 19, 2010 at 3:09 PM. Reason : the ones high enough that the deer can't reach them]
11/19/2010 3:09:16 PM
If there were a persimmon tree anywhere near me I'd do that
11/19/2010 3:10:40 PM
you gotta wait til after the first frostdon't ask me how i know
11/19/2010 3:11:23 PM
The first time I tried them they were unripe and someone was giving it to me as a joke. It was probably 15 years before I tried them again.
11/19/2010 3:16:22 PM
my dad played that trick on me when I was 10 or so and I'll never forget ithe tried to act like it was a family tradition since somebody had done it to him when he was little
11/19/2010 3:29:59 PM
Hmm first frost eh? Guess it's to the Asian market for me At least I can get everything else there I need for Thanksgiving produce wise.
11/19/2010 3:35:34 PM
Mmm, persimmons.
11/19/2010 3:47:35 PM
I know of a persimmon tree in raleigh.
11/19/2010 4:40:45 PM
There were no persimmons, but there were purple sweet potatoes I got overly excited about that haha.
11/21/2010 11:16:27 AM
I hate to be that guy, but I think it's Farmers' Market.
11/21/2010 12:26:02 PM
Purple sweet potatos? What's next!? Bright Orange sweet potatoes?
11/21/2010 1:40:23 PM

I had to do a double take of the OP. at first I was like "why do you need permission to go in the farmer's market?"
11/21/2010 3:24:58 PM
Ahhh yes, the Farmers' Market, yet another awful way for your girlfriend to ruin a perfectly good weekend of sleeping in.
11/21/2010 3:31:19 PM
^Holyshit is the girlfriend conspiracy web that large? I knew she was doing it for a reason!

Just went to the market. Got some great looking brussel sprouts, spring onions, collards, and rutabaga Go to the market and give the farmers some financial love. This time of year is always slow for them.

I wonder if there is a famers market around here. I never took advantage of the on in Raleigh [Edited on February 25, 2011 at 5:06 PM. Reason : late]

sweet, thanks!
2/25/2011 5:11:11 PM
I once heard the main one here in Raleigh is the highest grossing year round market in the States. I wonder if that's true.
2/25/2011 5:19:30 PM
on a whim I got "ugly" sweet potatoes from the farmer's market. They had light, very wrinkly skin and light insides. But they were absolutely delicious. The flesh was sweet and buttery with a velvety texture. It was a bit extra work to peel cause of the wrinkles but OMG ... totally worth it. ]
2/25/2011 5:22:49 PM
I have wondered if those potatoes were good. I'll have to get some next week. Luckily I am way too lazy to peel potatoes
2/25/2011 5:25:24 PM
what do persimmons taste like. I want to get an "exotic" fruit tree for my yard and unfortunately pummelo does not do good in this area apparently and I am not a fig fan.
2/25/2011 7:30:02 PM
bitter
2/25/2011 7:30:27 PM
is it Farmers/Farmer's/Farmers' Market?
2/25/2011 7:35:47 PM
I believe the state doesn't use any punctuation
2/25/2011 7:37:47 PM
^ 3 they are absolutely not bitter unless they are picked too soon. Persimmons do well in our climate as do pomegranate if trimmed properly.

2 red tomatoes, 3 green tomatoes, 3 peppers, 2 butternut squash, 1 cucumber, 2 zucchinis, 3 yellow squash, 1 bag of spinach, 1 onion, 2 containers of blueberries... All for $19.26

^ Gracias Went to the farmers market this morning to get our veggies for the week. Though I guess I was "early" the market is supposed to be open from 5am. I go up to a peach stand and ask for a basket of peaches, holding out $5. Dude goes, "We're not open yet and I don't have a dollar change.""Okay, so just give me an extra peach or two and we'll call it even.""But we're not open yet."At which point the peach lady across the aisle says, "I'll sell you peaches," lol. I also bought a watermelon from her since she wanted my money more than the other guy
7/11/2011 9:24:36 AM
was there yesterday with mah family. somehow my family had never been... like kids(adults) in a candy(fruit/vegetable) store.
7/11/2011 9:26:23 AM
I'm thinking about signing up for a CSA box instead of buying all my veggies piecemeal. I tend to buy too much when left to my own decision making devices because it all looks so good!
7/11/2011 9:27:51 AM
7/11/2011 9:28:43 AM
heard about this this weekend at the farmer's market: http://www.theproducebox.com/
7/11/2011 9:29:13 AM
I have thought about joining ^ but with just me and the way my schedule varies I might not be able to eat it all.
7/11/2011 9:31:13 AM
I did it last year, it ended up just being too expensive and way too many things were coming in the boxes that I didn't use or didn't like. This year I am just going to the farmers' market more often and buying the things I like
7/11/2011 9:34:35 AM
My family used to do it but we did a box from an individual farm. It was great! I want to start doing it again. I'm thinking of doing one from a local, organic farm rather than the Produce Box. There's a couple different options from nearby farms:http://www.bensproduce.blogspot.com/http://www.coonrockfarm.com/http://www.hilltopfarms.org/http://www.wildonionfarms.com/I'm sure there's more I'm missing. There's also CSAs that do just seafood or meat that I may start doing as well.
7/11/2011 9:37:22 AM
Yeah, people need to keep in mind that when they do those CSA's and farmshares, they have ZERO control over what it is that they get.So if you're like me, and only want Tomatoes, Cucumbers, etc., and have no interest in squash, radishes, eggplants... then a CSA might not be a good idea. That said, my late-bloomer tomatoes are finally sprouting in my backyard, so i'm excited about that. keeping an eye on them everyday. I'm actually using a topsy turvy... against my better judgment, but the result has been astounding as to the size of the plant itself. My plant hangs in excess of 6 feet.
