They play in the NL Central so anything is possible. They do need a true #1 though if they ever want to get over the hump. Zambrano was pitching like one at the end of the season. If that dude would just commit himself to get in shape, shut his mouth, and go out there and give 100% every 5 days, the Cubs would have their #1.
11/2/2010 2:28:21 PM
^Actually I think the division is on the rise, primarily due to the resurgence of Cincinnati. They should only get better next year, and St. Louis is always solid. I'm not counting on Big Z for anything other than being crazy and having a decent season. We definitely need another power arm in the rotation, so I wouldn't be shocked to see Cashner (who is FILTHY) leave the pen. Samardzija getting his shit together would be a huge plus as well. I've been reading good things about this kid Chris Carpenter(Cub version) who's been hitting triple digits on the gun in the Arizona Fall League.
11/2/2010 2:59:42 PM
Sandberg's feelings are hurt, so he's bouncing...
11/4/2010 1:59:29 AM
^^ One team does not make the division on the rise. If any division is on the rise, it is the NL East with all of the young pitching. Plus with the NL West coming off a great year, NL Central is going to continue to struggle outside of it's own division. Wild card in 2011 will come out of the NL West or the NL East again.
11/4/2010 8:54:06 AM
Agreed, it is hard justifying my "rising" statement when the Central will still most likely be the weakest NL division....just saying Cincinnati being once again being legitimate can't hurt the Central's cause. The Cubs while not great will definitely be better next year, giving the Central three solid teams.

^ much appreciatedHopefully we can start from where we left off under the new manager. The Central should be wide open, especially with Wainwright going down. Just need to make it to the post season and get hot. Hell the Giants did it.Go Cubbies! Plz to be the year!

We got a decent enough line up to win the Central. I'm glad Lou is gone, he had become too much of a negative for the team and there's no way to win in baseball with negative energy.^ edit: Hey brother, Go Irish for real! No jinx.[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 7:44 PM. Reason : .]
2/28/2011 7:44:01 PM
As always, we need to get off to a fast start so the negative pressure doesn't begin to mount. First 6 games are at home vs Pittsburgh and Arizona before hitting the road for 9 games. Need to start at least 4-2, hopefully 5-1.
2/28/2011 7:48:19 PM
Where can I find a Carlos Zambrano mental breakdown poolOr props on which teammate he throws a water cooler at
2/28/2011 7:49:48 PM
Most likely would get thrown at someone who would call him out on his bullshit, like Reed Johnson or Marlon Byrd. I'll find a similar pool on how many weeks it will be before Bobby Cox puts his hands around his wife's throat now that he has nothing to do.

i'm making a note of that.

You think our Cards take it without Waino?Because nobody else can beat them. Pitt and Houston are awful.
2/28/2011 9:00:20 PM
Haha the Reds were garbage last season against teams with winning records. I mean they were straight up terrible.Joey Votto would be a nice utility player for the Yanks though. Enjoy your Reds season.[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 9:01 PM. Reason : edit: fun hyperbole re: Votto]
I'm comfortable with Carp, Garcia and Westbrookit'll all come down to Lohse and whoever becomes the 5th arm
2/28/2011 9:06:29 PM
The Cards very easily could finish fourth this year. Third at very best.I actually like the Cubs this year. Be surprised if they or the Reds don't win the division.[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 9:08 PM. Reason : carpenter is 36 and injury prone -- relying on him to be an ace is foolish]
2/28/2011 9:07:36 PM
Ultimate sour grapes post from Boner
2/28/2011 9:08:52 PM
True. Clearly Votto would be an upgrade over AJ Burnett.
2/28/2011 9:09:59 PM
actually I'm much more worried about the bullpen than the startersthe Cards will put up runs. they just need a starter who can take it into the 6th and I think the four definite starters have what it takes
2/28/2011 9:14:33 PM
maybe the cards will trade pujols to the cubs. they might as well get something for him, since he's leaving anyways.

Meh, I really don't think that is a big deal at all. The Cubs actually came out looking pretty good by straight releasing him and eating the money. Very un-Cub like. And Powder's response to Silva's comments was great.

NL Central Prediction:1. Brewers - Major upgrades in pitching staff, lineup was already stacked, can the bull pen protect leads this year?2. Reds - Great lineup, the NL MVP at the peak of his career, but questions with starting pitching, and can the bull pen dominate in 2011 like it did in 2010? Will Dusty use Chapman effectively?3. Cubs - Could either finish 1st or 6th, so naturally we will finish in the middle of the pack. The defense has been suspect for past couple of years, Pena is a good add for a shaky defensive SS like Castro. Health has also been a concern, with stars like Soto, Soriano, and Ramirez missing significant time. Pitching staff looks solid on paper, Dempster is an ace, Garza (aside from his spring struggles) is a proven horse, Z can pitch if his head is right, and Marmol might be the best closer in the game this year. 4. Cards - Pujols contract talk, Wainwright lost for the year, shaky bull pen = down year5. Pirates - Good: Young players (Alvarez, McCutchen, etc) could actually lead a surprisingly potent Pirates line up. Bad: No ace, and unproven closer, and no one will be there to watch them. 6. Astros - Does anyone own an Astro (other than Hunter Pence) on their fantasy team?
3/28/2011 10:26:44 PM
I drafted Aramis as my starting 3B...that motherfucker better come through in a contract year
3/28/2011 10:27:44 PM
