If you could go back to school, all expenses paid on the condition you get a degree with a decent GPA, what would you study? What would be the most useful? What if you knew you'd also knew you'd get 750 k for completing the degree? (Enough so that you don't have to make the degree vocationally focused) What would you study? What would be the most interesting? It can be a bachelors, masters, phd, certificate program, or what have you.

I would stay in my current Engineering program and continue on to get my PhD. I would also try to transfer to another school in a different state that I have more interest in. I would need a supplemental income to help support my family so I would not have to worry about the full time job I also work...

Practical: PhD in statistics -- and make sure I went to a "name" school. For fun: Geology, or forestry, or maybe a PhD in Lonnie Thompson's glaciology group where I could do significant field work. Just something where I could work outside.[Edited on October 27, 2010 at 1:56 AM. Reason : c]

part of me says go back and finish my math and physics (feels like unfinished business)but today's qntmfred wants to do robotics and machine learning

For a career, I am glad I picked Mech Eng. If it was purely out of interests and I wouldn't have to worry about money it would have been something dealing with music most likely or literature in a close 2nd.

Meteorology (which I should have done in the first place) and then be the first to drive into an F5 intentionally.. may as well go balls to the wall haha

If it was free, I might continue on to a PhD rather than stopping at a Masters which would increase the utility of it somewhat. If I never had to worry about money again and had to choose what to study for fun I think I'd get all kinds of random electives that in no way make a coherent degree (some maybe a Masters in Liberal Studies) Although history &/or english could be fun if I wasn't worrying about a job.
10/27/2010 11:47:23 PM
I'd go to UNC (I'd wear red every day to keep my soul pure) for a Master's in library science.

As an English major, I would use this opportunity to pursue my other passions that were overshadowed:1) Meteorology2) Aerospace Engineering3) Computer ScienceBut assuming I can maintain a decent living on my current degree and future degrees in the same field, and since you sweetened the deal with 750k, I would consider doing Film Production or Design.

If I didn't have to earn money, get a JD and help students fight corruption in academia.

If I didn't have to worry about making money, I'd want to pursue a phd in international history or anthropology at Columbia

^I have to agree. I'm an ME but in general have a much bigger interest in writing, music, and "arts" related stuff (hence my earlier post in here) as far as pure interests go. I decided what I thought to be a more logical "career" choice since I was paying a lot to go to college and that is how I ended up with an ME degree. Now, that is certainly not the case with every humanities major and not with every engineering major, but there are definitely people in both my shoes and Netstorm's shoes (similar situations but we each chose a different path).

i'd finish my nutrition degree & get something in wildlife or whatever. i wanna be a park ranger in one of the big really pretty national parks. i just like nutrition.
11/1/2010 11:28:08 AM
MS or PhD in Materials Science
11/1/2010 12:03:10 PM
this question makes a lot more sense w/ just undergrad, so assuming that that is the question: i'd double major in applied math and computer science.
11/1/2010 12:51:51 PM
so you'd double major in applied math and applied math?
11/1/2010 2:35:22 PM
basically.although i don't know if that's actually what i'd do. but it'd definitely be a double major containing two of: applied math, computer science, some engineering. maybe i'd just actually do the civil engineering/applied math double major that i signed up for but never took any extra classes towards . god what a mistake that was.
11/1/2010 7:50:28 PM
architecture or industrial designi was a csc major
11/2/2010 11:35:39 AM
I'd go to vet schoolor meteorology
11/2/2010 6:05:02 PM
if I could go back to school, all expenses paid... I'd be sooooooooo happy and I'd go to med school
11/6/2010 5:12:36 PM
med school is one of those degrees that easily pays for itself, so i'm not sure why having it paid for would be the deciding factor...
11/6/2010 6:28:08 PM
Certainly not very useful career-wise, but honestly I would go back to be a History major.

Just saw this thread, whatever, I'll drag it back up.Either economics or one of the high-demand languages, like Arabic, Urdu, or Mandarin.Any of the above would be a bitch and a half but if I buckled down it would take me from the dim recesses of marginal employability and throw me to near enough the front of the pack.
