So, I just replaced the drive belt on this washing machine. It is an old Speed Queen NA2510WD Marathon Washer. It only makes the sound when it is agitating and not during spin cycle. The motor runs in different directions depending on the cycle. Any ideas?

What's it sound like?Is there a belt tensioner that you can adjust as the belt "stretches out" as it's worn in?

There is an idler pulley, currently, it's fairly tight on the belt. oh sonofabitch, I have a youtube video and I totally forgot to post it with the original post.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u269wuHs4-oThe drive belt is brand new, like 1 hour ago, whereas the drive belt for the water pump is older. I'm thinking possibly the agitator clutch, but I dunno.

the reason it spins in opposite directions: The transmission has a sprag clutch that locks up one way, and the whole thing spins at high speed (for spin cycles). the other way is agitate, and that's all taken care of internally. It sounds like you have a lower bearing failure, maybe excessive sprag wear.I'm thinking it's a bearing within the transmission itself. On spin cycle, the whole transmission spins, so you don't get internal bearing movement.[Edited on October 22, 2010 at 12:27 AM. Reason : blah blah.]

Is it just me or does that lower belt look really loose? I know the inertia will make it stretch outwards some but that almost looks like the slack in a bike chain or tank track.
