Does anyone practice this. I am wanting to get more into this both for spiritual/health/discipline reasons.

I meant on here. There are other religions that have always practiced fasting.
10/10/2010 3:34:21 PM
I did, as a kid, in the way described above (no food no water).Difficult at first, but your body gets used to it.
10/10/2010 4:04:47 PM
I do this every night from 8 or 9 pm till about 7:30 am the next morning. That's when I break the fast.
10/10/2010 4:13:58 PM
"sunset to sundown"wtf? i meant sunrise to sunset. actually, about an hour before sunrise until sunset.
10/10/2010 4:33:39 PM
sounds pretty dumb to me
10/10/2010 4:33:59 PM
I fast for 16 hours, eat for 8just a matter of preference
10/10/2010 4:45:42 PM
there is no health benefit to fasting that you can't get from eating less and exercising before you eat.
10/10/2010 5:15:59 PM
there are negative health benefits.
10/10/2010 5:22:28 PM
^^ the 1st thing mentioned was for spiritual reasons. that's my primary reason but I know the nature of TWW so i am not going to get into that. I am wondering if others practice this for anyone of those reasons though.
10/10/2010 6:26:30 PM
life is too short refrain from food....or in other words
10/10/2010 6:49:00 PM
What does fasting have to do with spirituality? Not trying to be rude, just curious.
10/10/2010 7:29:08 PM
i stopped eating for 7 days once; it's not that exciting
10/10/2010 9:24:23 PM
Want to fast.For spiritualityhealthdiscipline
10/10/2010 9:44:10 PM
I'm Eastern Orthodox and they are big on fasting of a sort. Fast days you're supposed to refrain from meat, dairy, oils, and some other things. I used to fast for Lent (normally longer than the Western version) but I've slacked off in recent years. I did notice the spiritual element, and it made the Easter celebration an even bigger deal.
10/10/2010 10:50:35 PM
I can definitely see how you would be more susceptible to religious hokum if you were starving.
10/10/2010 10:56:58 PM
Nah, I'm usually pretty level in my susceptibility, but I'm way more willing to be sociable with people who make me uncomfortable when doing so means I get to gorge myself on goat after abstaining from good food for a month and a half.
10/11/2010 9:52:22 AM
A fast for us is a 24 hour period without food or drink, once a month and whenever you feel like you need to do it in addition to that.
10/11/2010 9:58:16 AM
10/11/2010 10:40:42 AM
this will get you nowhere, except hungry & miserable. just eat.
10/11/2010 10:53:17 AM
^not truejust because it is not conventional, does not mean there is anything wrong with itlook up Intermittent Fasting...tons of research and studies done to show benefits to fasting for periods throughout the day and even working out fasted
10/11/2010 11:11:11 AM
i don't believe it. this is one of those things where if the majority of doctors/the medical community/scientific community don't think it's good, i'm not going for it. i'm staying w/ my original statement.even if all of them decided it was a great idea...fuck that shit. i just eat.
10/11/2010 11:27:14 AM
I don't see any physical benefit to fasting. But, why is that even a question? As a matter of fact, the whole point of fasting not to connect, but to DISCONNECT from the physical. It's about feeding the soul and spirit, not the flesh.[Edited on October 11, 2010 at 11:39 AM. Reason : ...]

general consensus > a couple of studiesyou're not going to convince me. we can do this all day. fasting is stupid.

crap doesn't get caked up inside you unless you have a serious medical condition, which would have put you in the hospital already. your intestines aren't house plumbing.i'm not really following the logic here. if you're starving yourself, why would your body want to get rid of potential nutrients faster? maybe it does, i'm not a doctor, but that doesn't seem logical to me.[Edited on October 11, 2010 at 3:18 PM. fasting to purge would be stupid. "purges" are stupid period though.
10/11/2010 3:41:29 PM
how does fasting = starving ?the body doesn't even go catabolic until something like 36 hours after having your last meal
10/11/2010 4:01:21 PM
10/11/2010 4:04:33 PM
wow, nice logicexcept you're completely mistakenEDIT: I guess it really depends on the length of the fast, but I still have a hard time comparing fasting to starvation[Edited on October 11, 2010 at 4:06 PM. Reason : ]

Are you really playing the dictionary gameFasting is dumb, but it's not fucking starvation
10/11/2010 4:07:22 PM
aahahahahahah god i love this place.starving or fasting yourself on purpose is stupid.
10/11/2010 4:24:59 PM
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I think you have to play a pretty selective "dictionary game" to support the fact that starving can't be a synonym of fasting. Both words have a lot of definitions and accepted usage: A pretty common definition of starving includes deprivation (generally of food/water/nourishments/whatever) while fasting would definitely include abstaining...It really gets into splitting hairs on the level of severity, purpose, and POV to say that one couldn't be used as a synonym for the other in a certain context.Either way, it isn't really worth arguing over [Edited on October 11, 2010 at 4:46 PM. Don't you have to fast before getting a colonoscopy?
10/12/2010 7:40:37 AM
medically speaking, starvation is when the body starts to break down its own muscle mass to sustain itself.that usually takes a couple of days without food, and no one here is talking about doing a 2 day fast.so yeah, in the context of this thread, fasting != starvation, unless you are anorexic to begin with, in which case you are starving all the time.
10/12/2010 10:48:38 AM
I, too, believe that depriving your body of vitamins and nutriets is good for it.
10/12/2010 1:03:03 PM

aint nothing wrong with Fasting.

What I follow myself and what I recommend to my clients are two separate things. I never said anyone HAD to fast, it's just my preference and I haven't notice any ill effects from doing so. It also works way better with my schedule, as it's much easier to fit in 2-3 big meals instead of a bunch of tiny ones when there is no difference whatsoever (researched and proven). My biggest grip is that people are making false claims about fasting being bad.Your other point...seriously? You're going to judge me as a trainer because I have some old pictures in my WOLF WEB photo gallery....really? Grow up.
10/13/2010 3:05:51 PM
I think I'll start fasting after my blood-letting appointment. This thread is making me hungry.
10/13/2010 4:54:36 PM
I often fast after a way-too-long night of drinking the previous nightUnless drinking Dr. Pepper the next day counts as not fasting
10/13/2010 5:15:32 PM
10/13/2010 5:26:01 PM
I typically fast for around 23 hours every weekday, but for convenience
