EquilibriumGood Sci Fi flick that probably was over looked by a lot of people. If you liked stuff like A Brave New World, or 1984, or even the Matrix then I would check this out.

It's a thread about "lesser known films that are worthy of a look."You want me to recommend Die Hard? I like Die Hard. I think everybody's seen it, though.

Cidade de Deus / City of GodIt's a Brazilian movie, so it's in Portuguese and subtitled, but it it's probably in my top ten list of favorite movies. I'm sure some of you've seen it, the rest probably never heard of it.

American Kickboxer 2mostly for the epic well-acted final fight
9/29/2010 1:08:46 PM
Smiley Face- trippy stoner flick starring Anna Faris Shallow Grave- Danny Boyle's first feature, about a group of roommates/friends who discover a suitcase full of cash and eventually turn on each other, good mix of comedy with some darker themes. Jacob's Ladder- excellent psychological thriller about a Vietnam vet struggling with mental illness (or is he?)Clockers- really good drug dealing film from Spike Lee, with a screenplay written by acclaimed author Richard Price (who later wrote for The Wire)King of New York- vastly underrated gangster flick starring Larry Fishbourne and Christopher Walken (I am hesitant to list it since Craig Lindsey just wrote a column about how awesome it is). I saw Equilibrium last week, it was one of the most unintentionally funny & biggest ripoff movies i've ever seen"look he's got a cute dog, kill him" i cant believe anyone seriously like it, although i'd still recommend people to watch it just for the funny
9/29/2010 4:22:06 PM
Well fine. Since nobody liked my suggestion of Equilibrium, then I'll throw out the movie Unthinkable with Samuel L Jackson and Carrie Ann Moss. It's a new movie but most of the people I've talked to have never heard of it.

A Town Called PanicStop-motion french film on Netflix Instant Watch. It was hilarious. Kind of like Wallace & Gromit on a sugar high.

I watched an indie comedy called The Wedding Weekend last night. It was surprisingly decent. It reminds me of my group of friends and how awkwardly close we all are, minus the whole a capella group.
10/18/2010 5:25:25 PM
There's a pretty decent horror movie on instant watch called The House of the Devil that came out last year but I hadn't heard of it. Definitely recommend to fans of Satanic cults.

I didn't really like The Queen...I dunno, it was fine, but it was one of those things that was just inexplicably super popular (as indie releases go).Still haven't seen North Country, I'll have to check that out.

Gates of Heaven. Errol Morris' first documentary, about Pet Cemeteries and alive humans. Upon the movie's completion, Werner Herzog cooked, and ate, a leather shoe as he'd bet that Morris would never finish the project.Melvin Goes to Dinner. 4 people sit in a restaurant and talk. Sample line of dialogue: "I came so hard I almost shit the bed." The Weatherman. Nicolas Cage humorously plays a sad loser. But this time, he as a bow and arrow.A Woman is a Woman. Foreign, meaning the character's speak French. Sexy, meaning there are tits. Funny, meaning smart-silly. Directed by Goddard, meaning nothing. Mishima: a Life in Four Chapters. A movie show so engrossing I chose not to leave for the bathroom to masturbate. And there's ritualistic suicide and a Phillip Glass score. Bridge to Terabithia. Your time would probably be better served reading the book, but the movie has made at least one grown man cry.

has anyone else seen the film The Freebie starring Katie Aselton (of The League) and Dax Shepard? It clocks in at 75 minutes so it's easily watchable. It explores the relationship and subsequent downfall of a married couple who agree to give each other one freebie weekend to explore and engage in sexual activity with another partner. It's low budget, but I thought it was pretty spot on in regards to the effects those actions can have on what was seemingly a very strong relationship that was only in a slight lull.
