Cue the haters/BBQ civil warWas just on America's best: American Classics http://www.examiner.com/food-reality-tv-in-national/alton-brown-searches-for-america-s-bestIt was in the top 10, not sure which number I was in the other room and heard NC BBQ, then rushed in to see.

I like The Pit, but they pay for all of this national recognition[Edited on September 23, 2010 at 12:27 AM. Reason : I could go for a trip to the Pit]
9/23/2010 12:18:51 AM
RAWR RAWR RAWR THE PIT SUCKS
9/23/2010 12:23:44 AM
yea its been on food network beforeits good but not in the dumpy, checkered table cloth, practically in someone's back yard way that many eastern NC places areof course those places will never get national recognition. but THOSE are the best places. the pit is still yummy enough though. but far from the best[Edited on September 23, 2010 at 12:32 AM. 9/23/2010 12:46:37 AM
I find that I enjoy bbq - in all the nuance that new faces, towns, and cooking styles bring. To me there is no 'best' simply 'yea I'd come back.'

Fucking Smithfields is better than the Pit...Not that the Pit is bad... but still[Edited on September 23, 2010 at 9:23 AM. Reason : As far as the bbq anyways... sides are a different story]

9/23/2010 9:40:11 AM
Jesus, what a crock. Nice to see what money will get you.The Pit isn't even half as good as Ole Time.
9/23/2010 9:44:25 AM
The Pit is okay, but it's expensive and did not knock me on my ass. I'd rather go to Backyard in Durham.
9/23/2010 9:46:05 AM
I'd rather be at Wilbur's

The vinegar sauce is part of the secret to good BBQ. It's not all about the pig you know.
9/23/2010 11:57:54 AM
oh I'm not hating on vinegar, it's just that there's a limit to how much of it I want on my BBQ
9/23/2010 12:02:59 PM
no offense, but Ole Time isnt very good IMO, the bbq doesnt have enough flavor, probably because they want you to flavor it yourself with sauces, etc. I think the sauce that bbq places cook their bbq in is the biggest factor in how good the pig is. Everyone gets a good animal, its all in how you cook it and how you sauce it up.The Pit was damn good, I think their brisket is a little bit better than their BBQ, but the BBQ is really good too. Its got a good balance of vinegar and spice.bbq joints are always a little too generic though, nothing beats a pig pickin done by someone who knows what they're doin. I think my father-in-laws BBQ is the best I've ever had
9/23/2010 12:20:20 PM
Another reason why the pit is more expensive, other than location and decor, is the pigs they cook are antibiotic free
9/23/2010 12:25:24 PM
9/23/2010 1:28:16 PM
i prefer my pigs to be free of bacteria.

I don't really care about vinegar or tomato base. I just want smoky flavor.
9/23/2010 2:13:07 PM
i smoked some butts the other day and used the jack daniels wood chips... turned out really fucking good. I used my own vinegar based pepper sauce (made with splenda!) and it was delicious!
9/23/2010 2:16:59 PM
I considered smoking one or two this summer, but I stuck with doing jerk chicken and apple butter pork chops over apple wood or mesquite. It seems like the standard kettle-style grill would be a hassle to smoke large cuts on. There's all that switching out the coals and whatnot.
9/23/2010 2:26:38 PM
i was supposed to eat lunch there today

Why is everyone trying to compare The Pit v. Coopers v. Ole Time does not compute. Which two don't belong? Its like trying to compare 42nd St to Long Johns because they both serve seafood.
9/23/2010 4:14:47 PM
LOL, yankees.
9/23/2010 4:23:09 PM
Attention NC: The barbecue here is a distant 4th place or worse. KC, Memphis, and Texas all have better barbecue.*Ducks and covers*

Watching Man vs. Food Carnivore Chronicles, never had the ribs there but they look amazing.
12/11/2010 9:30:42 PM
^^See, I liked everything they gave me but the chopped BBQ, which is really just disheartening. If you can do chick, ribs, and pulled pork that well, you really need to get the chopped down. And by all means they do everything else well.
