Do those who have taken it and passed:

Should I bother going to the class that is offered? Or would my time be better spent just buying a book and working problems in my spare time?

If you've kept up with your class work throughout the years, the prep class will help refresh your memory. I say just go and sit in.

One advise is to go over the Reference Book from cover to cover and get to know it well. The FE exam is just looking up stuff in that reference book and so if you've mastered the book, or at least looked over it a few times to get acquainted, then you'll have no problem passing.

i was signed up for that class and went to the first few, but i wasn't getting anything out of it so i stopped going

i studied the night before for a couple hours and passed

if anything, the formula book they loan you in the class is helpful... just know how to navigate it before the actual test



bottom line, know your math, be able to make educated guesses on foreign material

yeah just look over the book that you will have with you at the test and study what you feel you can do well in if you need to. when you choose what part you will take for the second half, look over the general and whatever your field is, you may find that your specific field has harder questions than the general or it may cover things that you are more familiar and comfortable with.

go over the videos of the stuff you know the day before and familiarize yourself with the book... know where shit is

you'll be good.


if you don't know that shit by now then you wont know it then.

if you dont pass, you should quit engineering.

just go to the first class and get a free copy of the reference book. then just watch the videos a few days before the test. i went to a few of the classes and they were useless for me.

Just go and sit in on the subjects you aren't sure about. That is what I did and I finished it in 2 hours early and passed.

Some of the classes or worthless if you haven't ever seen the material before because they try to rush through as many problems as possible.
My advice is get the "book" with all the problems from Sir Speedy and do the problems on your own time. The class is will refresh your memory, but I would complete some of the problems before the class and use the class check your answers/method.
For the stuff that you have no idea on, and I would either find someone in that major or talk with the instructor of that section 1 on 1 sometime so you can atleast get the "low hanging fruit"

How extensively do I need to know Calculus, Diff Eq and Statistics? Are they softball questions or are they actually challenging?

I didn't think Calculus and Diff EQ was too bad (Diff Eq revolves around those 3 equations and which one do you use) Statistics was more difficult than I thought it would be

Took this shit today. God that test sucked. I wanted to shoot myself by the end of it. Hope I passed though. Can't imagine retaking it.

i took it yesterday too

the worst part about statistics was the linear regression stuff.. i spent way too long calculating Sxx Sxy etc

and there were a lot more engineering econ problems than i expected

overall i feel ok about it. not sure if I'll take it again if I didn't pass

Statistics was the easy part for me. I'm worried that the fact that my major doesn't require Thermo, Dynamics, Fluids, or Strength of Materials might have hurt me, though. The Diff Eq stuff was also easier than I'd expected. Screw some of the other math problems though.

I took the EE test in the spring and bubbled in an entire column guessing. I felt pretty confident on about 90 questions, and totally guessed on 30, like didn't even reread just bubbled. I felt good about the afternoon stuff. I passed. So don't sweat if you feel like you bombed a section.

I just let me calculator do all that, saved a bunch of time. You need the casio calculator, that thing pwns. (or the programmable HP if you have the time to learn it and program it for common functions)

I was surprised with how much trouble I was having with the advanced math part of the afternoon session. that and chemistry were really my only problems. Sun night when I was getting to sleep (sat I just passed out drunk) I kept running problems through my head and figured out some that i missed and realized some mistakes I made that I thought I had right.

All of my friends took the prep class studied hard did the HW in there and half of them failed... i passed with no exam prep at all... I don't study well though, i either know something or i don't.

I took it 6 months after graduating and not using the information since leaving school and still passed. Most of the stuff on the test you either know and have seen, or is completely foreign. If you can concentrate one the stuff you do know, and like others said make an educated guess on the unknown stuff you should come out Ok.

I think I remember one of the professors saying 4 out of 5 or more passed back when my graduating class took it that were in the engineering program at NC State. After I got my first job, a UNCC engineering student said less than 15% of his graduating class had taken and passed. NC State does a really good job of preparing you for the test, its just up to you to apply what you have learned.

last year's pass rate was around 85% for MEs taking the general/other disciplines in the afternoon

so 4 out of 5 is still about right

My advice for the FE is to do the problems as fast as you can, skip and return later. By doing this I was able to finish every problem (General/General) and had a few mins at the end to go back over some I was unsure of!

go to the class and get the book. its a really good refresher. and you may learn something new that will help you with a few questions. i remember i learned how to read binary in the review class and that helped me get 1 or 2 questions right on the exam

I watched the videos the day before, that was it for me. It had also been 4 years since I took a thermo class. I only had trouble with chemistry since I hadn't seen it since high school.

This was the general (other discipline) exam

I would say I'm a pretty bright student, but hardly exceptional in a field like engineering. So for future test takers, don't stress too much.

That's all you need. It's cheap, easily accessible since it's online, and it's got a near endless supply of practice problems for every topic covered on the FE. Every problem has a detailed solution you can review afterward. You can also generate 1/4, 1/2, or full-length practice tests.

Trust me, USE THIS SITE. You will be happy you did.


FE Prep class at NCSU - WASTE OF TIME... only good for some basic strategy tips here and there.
