Is any one else looking forward to this? David Fincher (of Fight Club) is directing a remake of the 2009 Swedish movie of the same name based on the first book in the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson. Apparently a trilogy is in the works, the first is due out in 2011. The cast is starting to shape up with Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and relatively unknown Rooney Mara landed the coveted role of Lisbeth Salander. I enjoyed the Swedish movie and think Craig is a good fit. Never heard of Mara, so who knows. I haven't read the books, but I think I may check them out.http://www.us.imdb.com/title/tt1568346/(Surprised there's not already a thread on this. searched for dragon, tattoo, and dragon tattoo and nothing came up.)[Edited on August 16, 2010 at 7:42 PM. not really
8/16/2010 7:41:57 PM
this has potential to be pretty bad though since the current plan is to go with swedish accents for this movie to truly reflect the book
8/16/2010 7:49:12 PM
Meh...not really. I've read the first two books and now seen the first two movies in subtitles. Books were great and are always better than the movies...which was the case with these as well. But the movies were solid, so I'm not complaining. I just don't know if I want to see a different version of this. The Swedish version was pretty spot on for the most part...cutting it short and not including certain things just to cram into a two-hour movie of course. I can't imagine an English version being that much better...although I do really like Daniel Craig.

I loved the 3 books. Definitely thought they got better and better and I really wish he could've finished the series. I've only seen the first of the swedish trilogy so far and I enjoyed it, I need to grab the other two at some point.
8/16/2010 10:12:04 PM
Watched the swedish film, thought it was really good. Not sure there would be much point to watching this one.

weird, wife and i just watched the original over the weekend on netflix instant view. i enjoyed it, my only complaint was that i got a little confused on some of the family structure.so is it supposed to be the same exact movie, just with different actors speaking english? seems pointless.
8/17/2010 12:06:56 PM
Pointless? My dad who enjoyed the swedish movies has the same argument. The mainstream isn't going to have read the books and probably won't enjoy the subtitled movies. They are just trying to make an americanized version to milk it for what its worth.
8/17/2010 12:10:24 PM
yeah well of course every movie has a point to make money... just saying, i understand re-making a low budget movie to make it better, or re-envisioning an old movie to modernize it... like with that Let the Right One In > Let Me In, at least they can make the story happen in America so it makes sense that they're speaking english, even if that is a minor change. i really hope they don't try to make this movie take place in america now, just doesn't seem right with the Nazi ties, and the big weird family stuff... /rant

I would imagine they are remaking this for wide release targeting American (ie English speaking) audiences. I'm not trying to sound snooty or anything, but I get the feeling that the mainstream movie going population in the US has a low tolerance for subtitles.

[quote] "The script, which captures the novel's bleak tone, was written by Academy Award winner Steven Zaillian, who wrote Schindler's List, and it departs rather dramatically from the book. Blomkvist is less promiscuous, Salander is more aggressive, and, most notably, the ending — the resolution of the drama — has been completely changed.""This may be sacrilege to some, but Zaillian has improved on Larsson — the script's ending is more interesting."[quote]- Director, David Fincherhmmm not sure how i feel about this :-/

^ Yeah, me either. While I enjoyed the Swedish movie, the slight changes or things they left out from the book bothered me. A complete overhaul would suck. Just finished reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Great series! I know a few people who did not read them in order. Don't know how they did that, I would have been too confused.
1/15/2011 9:39:20 AM
I thought the Swedish movie was good... the things they left out of the book weren't that important or central to the story (i.e. the relationship between Mikael & Cecilia didn't affect the plot at all and was left out)^^ that sounds lame though
1/15/2011 10:33:26 AM
I was riveted to the original version and it's sequel. waiting for the third.I'd rather watch a foreign movie with subtitles, because you are seeing the actual performance of the actors. I think what made the originals good will be lost in the remakes, which is the vibe from the country of origin.

Just read the Dragon Tatoo and watched the movie version with subtitles. Like someone mentioned above, I was disappointed enough that little story elements were retooled. I'm not at all looking forward to having the resolution being completely changed. Of course, I can just not see it. The Swedish version as it was already had a much less promiscuous Blomkvist - although in the book he wasn't exactly prowling around for booty - it was more that he was a very open and easygoing individual and when opportunity knocked, he knocked back. I noticed in general his movie character was subdued and really wasn't the same person in the book. Regarding subtitles, I can barely remember they were there. I just remember seeing the movie and recalling that it was reasonably good. That's how it generally goes for me, unless I read something like "somebody set up us the bomb".
1/15/2011 9:50:28 PM
read all the books....looking forward to this movie
1/15/2011 10:36:33 PM
just saw the 3rd swedish one tonight. pretty good.
1/16/2011 2:20:00 AM
^Have you read the books? I thought the third movie was awful. The pacing sucked and they jumped around so much with random plot points, if you hadn't read the books i would think the third swedish movie could not have been enjoyable. And even as someone who had read them I still thought it wasn't great at all.
1/16/2011 12:01:20 PM
i've read all the books, but haven't watched any of the swedish movies. the first two are on my netflix queue. I don't see the point of completely retooling the story/ending, but i'm sure i'll end up seeing the movie anyway. i like the idea of daniel craig is blomkvist though.

5/29/2011 7:04:24 PM
awesome...looks pretty close to how I imagined it in the book... I just finished reading the trilogy... i liked the 2nd one the best but the 3rd was good as well..too bad stieg larson died. i read that he was halfway done with a 4th and had planned for there to be up to 10 books in the series...maybe someone else will pick it up
5/29/2011 7:37:41 PM
sweet. less than a month ago i read all 3. really enjoyed them. i hope the movie does the books justice.
5/29/2011 9:24:14 PM
Why remake?
5/29/2011 10:59:18 PM
It's not a remake of the movie, it's an English adaptation of the book.
5/29/2011 11:42:43 PM
book is better in Swedish, I'm just sayin

My wife just finished the book. She hated it. I just read the plot summary on wikipedia, and wasnt impressed either.
5/31/2011 12:34:12 PM
I really don't see how someone could hate the book. not that it was the best thing I've ever read but it's pretty entertaining.
5/31/2011 12:50:44 PM
I think she said it was too long and scattered. She also hated the ending. Probably just her adjusting to a new writer.Maybe I was too strong when I said she 'hated' it. I just dont think she'll be reading the other two. She is the type of person who can chew through a novel in a day, but it took her a long time on her kindle to get through this one.
5/31/2011 1:07:21 PM
it took me a while to read the first one, only b/c there is a HUGE family tree to keep up with and i kept having to reference the back pages to remember who was who's uncle, and who's dad, and who's brothers and sisters, etc...however, the trilogy was one of the best i've ever read.i haven't found anything that has kept my attention since. i'm on a reading drought.
5/31/2011 4:30:01 PM
i definitely liked 2 and 3 better than the first. it seemed like the first half of book 1 was just explaining the family tree which i didn't think was 100% necessary, especially given that most of the names were very swedish and hard to remember.
5/31/2011 4:31:41 PM
I listened to the audiobook, and in the beginning I was a little bored (only for the first chapter or so) when all the financial discussion was going on.But then I got hooked and was sucked in... amazing book. I need to listen to the 2nd and 3rd ones.I just saw the trailer - looks sooooo good
6/5/2011 10:47:52 PM
trailer is fucking great
6/6/2011 2:53:42 AM
^seconded...and the cover song is awesome!
6/6/2011 7:46:08 AM
watching the leaked redband trailer online made it look pretty good. but then they showed it before x-men and it looked great.still unsure about whether this needed to be made so soon, but at least it looks like they're really doing it well. excellent trailer.
6/6/2011 12:33:00 PM
yeah, the trailer on the big screen before x-men was pretty good. it certainly looks a lot more stylish than the Swedish version. And this is right up Fincher's alley, so I'm sure it will be well made.It definitely didn't NEED to be be redone so soon. But at least it looks like it will be just as good (and maybe better in some aspects).
6/6/2011 6:42:35 PM
The trailer was pretty amazing.. and the cover of the Immigrant Song was perfect for it.
6/6/2011 7:19:05 PM
I overall liked the trilogy, but thought everything was too overly sexualized. Graphic depictions of sexual abuse? Alright I understand trying to convey how horrible it can be....EVERY character being promiscuous? OK maybe a stretch but I can maybe see the author wanting to demonstrate that women are sexual as well...Just about every conversation at some point involving sex, nipples, weiners, etc? Alright this dude is actually just a pervert.
