I went to bump the old Winston-Salem thread and saw it was dead, so this is the new Winston thread. The town has gotten a hell of a lot cooler in the last couple of years. Downtown is hopping. The new baseball stadium rocks. The Krispy Kreme doughnuts are still awesome as shit.AND CAN I GET A HELL YEAH FOR ZIGGY'S COMING BACK

I still hate Chris Paul for punching Julius Hodge in the nuts.

8/11/2010 10:58:54 PM
I'm in Winston now that I'm going to Wake. It's not bad, but I haven't really been downtown yet. I live on the border of the ghetto, like, not in it, but getting close, according to a local.
8/11/2010 11:44:52 PM
What area? If you're near the college, it should be pretty smooth sailing.
8/11/2010 11:47:23 PM
^^ University Parkway is generally speaking the dividing line[Edited on August 11, 2010 at 11:47 PM. Reason : .]

In my first, and probably last, post in the W-S thread I will announce the following...Winston-Salem is probably the only sizeable location in North Carolina in which I know NOBODY. I don't know anyone from there, I don't know anyone that's lived there, and I don't know anyone there now.Just a fun fact. Nothing against the place, it's just pretty random considering how large it is and relatively close it is to Raleigh.
8/12/2010 12:04:53 AM
^^Yeah, you really don't wanna be anywhere east of University Pkwy (ie: near the stadium/coliseum), unless you're going to the CookOut on Akron. East Winston in general is kinda ... ^That is weird. I feel like half the people I met at State had some connection to Winston-Salem[Edited on August 12, 2010 at 12:09 AM. Reason : ]

I live in Northeastern Winston near Old Belew's Creek Rd. WS gets better once you get on 158...but anything between 158 and university parkway is sketch

8/12/2010 10:17:13 AM
I live right near the corner of Bethabara and University. About five hundred feet east.
8/12/2010 12:52:12 PM
Stratford Road representin! I live in the condos right behind Cities restaurant. My girlfriend lives in the new Factory Lofts downtown, which is awesome. I get drunk on Trade Street, stumble back to her place, and pass the hell out. It's literally about a 100 ft walk.
8/12/2010 2:29:47 PM
I live in the neighborhood across the street from Forsyth Country Club. Pretty nice area and good location.
8/12/2010 3:12:55 PM
is twin city diner still around?man i used to go there a lot when i lived in winston for a little while back in '04
8/12/2010 3:37:59 PM
my little bro worked at the Diner a couple years ago as a waiter. It's still there as far as I know. I ate dinner there last year sometime.
8/12/2010 4:22:55 PM
Yep, still there. They actually did a great rennovation and spruced the place up. Love me some Gus burger. That got me thinking: What's everyone's favorite restaurant in Winston? I'm going with the Fourth Street Filling Station. Love the patio, love the location, love the short-but-sweet draft beer selection. And the shrimp & grits is downright ridiculous.
8/13/2010 9:29:08 AM
Anyone say foothills and I'll kick your teeth in
8/13/2010 4:42:43 PM
Foothills is known more as a brewery than a restaurant anyways
8/16/2010 10:07:36 AM
True, but their Buffalo Burger is money.
8/17/2010 12:52:07 PM
actually just moved away from winston....but i love that area...definitely a fan. in-laws still live there so i get to visit often.

I must say I have fond Memories of Ziggys...Alice in Chains WOOT!
8/17/2010 10:01:20 PM
^^Really? Don't get me wrong, Winston used to suck ass when I lived here in high school, but I think it's gotten pretty great these days. I moved around a lot after college, but ended up back here begrudgingly when I ran out of money.Still, the downtown has grown up a lot with the new baseball stadium and all the bars/restaurants on Fourth and Trade street. You've got an ACC team here, so I get to watch State at least once a year, usually twice. Bowman Gray racing is redneck as hell, but it's always a good time. Also, I love that there's always some free concert/festival/party going on downtown. I dunno ... seems like a pretty good place to me. Plus, it's right in the middle of everything. Good hiking at Pilot Mountain or Hanging Rock is 30 min away. This past weekend, we went tubing down the Dan River with a cooler of beer. Shit was awesome. I can make it to Charlotte in an hour, Boone in an hour, Raleigh in 1.5, Asheville in 2, and the beach in 3.5. Not bad.
8/18/2010 12:12:35 AM
I went to Reynolds. You?

I live in Greensboro, and grew up here. So I have to second this:
8/19/2010 11:26:17 AM
damn, you saw 311 at Ziggy's before they were popular? How old are you?

I'm ashamed to admit this, but I actually saw Kid Rock there before anyone knew who the hell he was. And even more ashamed to admit this ... but he put on a pretty awesome show But the great thing about Ziggys was that it brought big acts to a relatively small town. The Black Crowes, DMB, Deftones, Daughtry, 311, Hootie and the Blowfish all played there ... along with a billion other bands. For a venue that only held 750 (supposedly), and a town of 230,000, that's pretty damn good. And I agree about downtown. As nice as Fourth and Trade have gotten, other areas need some work (specifically Liberty Street and anything East of it). The good thing is that Wake Forest has bought a ton of that old tobacco warehouse property, and they're moving all their biotech labs out of the hospital and into downtown. That should clean up a lot of the sketchiness.
8/24/2010 11:27:16 AM
I love Winston. Not too big, not too small, no traffic, downtown is coming back, airport with dope air show every year, new baller baseball stadium(go dash!) , demon deacons basketball/football games, ziggy's is coming back, north carolina school of the arts performances, reynolda gardens/museum, dixie classic fair, old salem(wax candles!), and tanglewood to name a few attractions.
8/27/2010 8:45:06 PM
I live in Ardmore. It's a pretty awesome place to live.
8/27/2010 9:16:50 PM
8/27/2010 10:13:16 PM
^^And Ardmore is awesome. I've got a good friend that lives on Watson. Every year, some dude up on his street -- sort of near the Hawthorne intersection -- puts on one hell of a halloween display. I got a photo of it two years ago on my way downtown:[Edited on August 27, 2010 at 10:22 PM. Reason : ]

Is that on Forsyth street? If so my friend lives right across the street from there.^[Edited on August 28, 2010 at 11:32 AM. Reason : ^]
8/28/2010 11:29:23 AM
Halloween is brutal for folks living right on Hawthorne.
8/28/2010 1:22:43 PM
Pretty sure it's right near the corner of Watson and Gaston in Ardmore.
8/29/2010 10:29:09 PM
^Yep, it's on one of the corner lots there IIRC. My in-laws live really close to there on Lockland and, according to them, that guy has been going all out for Halloween for years and years.
8/30/2010 11:03:06 AM
I've always went to Franklin St or Charlotte for Halloween, but I'm thinking I'll stay in Winston this year. What do people normally do? Just go to bars? I heard the Millennium Center had a big party last year but don't know anything about it. Any ideas?
8/30/2010 11:28:41 AM
^^^ I double checked on my way home from work today. It is on Watson and Gadson, and I'm just a block away. ^Bar hop along 4th and Trade. I've always had the impression that the party at the Millennium Center is way lame.
8/30/2010 8:01:53 PM
Yeah, I kind of assumed that the Millennium Center thing would be lame (even though the New Years Eve party I went to was pretty good). Bar-hopping on Fourth and Trade sounds like a decent enough plan. Maybe I'll hit up Elliot's ... probably some interesting things to see up there.Speaking of which, I just heard a new rooftop bar is opening soon next to Tates on Fourth Street. I've always thought a rooftop bar would be awesome to see in Winston. Glad someone agreed.
8/30/2010 9:18:54 PM
there's some house in Ardmore on Miller Street near the Hawthorne intersection that goes all out for Halloween every year also.
