is there any benefit to declaring a minor now vs later in my ncsu career? like could i go ahead and take the required courses now and finish them and then finally declare the minor later? i am far too lazy to declare it right now

what's the minor?

it should give you access to an advisor for your minor. It may let you enroll in restricted classes that are required for the minor. And it may give you class enrollment preference over students who are not in the major or minor.

the department should have some sort of minor coordinator. they should be able to answer your question if you contact them.

contacts and websites for each minor:
http://www.ncsu.edu/advising_central/minors.html

My minor was in the same department as my major, so declaring it didn't really make much of a difference for me. I could get into all of the classes already b/c of my major. My advisor was familiar enough with the courses and instructors, etc.

all that being said, it really doesn't take much effort/work. I know you said you're lazy, but this is beyond lazy. why not just get it done?

its a physics minor. i also didn't want to declare it just yet because i wanted to be able to just drop my classes in case they were too difficult... without having to withdraw from the minor, however you do that

good point.

from what I have heard, once you are in, it could be hard to withdraw.

and you dont want to do that

if that's the case, I'd say just take as many of the classes you can before declaring. As far as getting the minor, it shouldn't matter as long as you declare before your last semester.

Just make sure you're familiar with the program and are taking the right classes and what not.

^yeah i would definitely meet with an advisor and get the right cirriculum before persuing too far.

I had taken what i thought were all my prerequisites for a psych minor and went to apply during my last semester only to find out that i had been using an outdated prereq guide and was missing one class. I had to jump through hoops, meet with half a dozen different people and finally sit down with the head of the psych department after writing her a long letter explaining everything. Basically I was using a ncsu psych website that was out of date but the psych department never removed or updated, they just made a brand new site and forgot about it. Well after all of that I was able to be grandfathered in and got my minor, but i wouldn't want anyone to go through that in their final month before graduating.

Why would you need to withdraw from a minor or second major for that matter? Can't you just turn in your blue card or whathaveyou and graduate without finishing your other degree audits?
