Anyway, I fucking hate the word "Patriotic." I personally believe that the president should continue this progress and adhere to the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and remove the 50,000 troops that will remain in Iraq by the end of 2011. Although political and security uncertainties remain, these concerns should not delay the withdrawal. There will always be excuses, especially from those who favored the war at the outset, for an open-ended presence.

Such a policy reversal would be neither warranted nor wise. An expeditious military withdrawal from Iraq, and a handover of security responsibilities to the Iraqi people is in America’s strategic interest. The war in the Iraq and such as has already consumed far too much blood and treasure, and our troops are straining under the burdens of repeated foreign deployments.

Iraq wasn't really about oil, in my opinion.

Supposedly (per the SOFA), we'll be down to 50k in Iraq by the end of this month, with everyone out by the year's end. The State Department is going to be running the show in Iraq, but they do plan to plus-up an Army of contractors (and I suspect that we'll still run some black ops around there, and maybe some special forces with the knowledge and consent of the Iraqi gov't).

Same reason we invaded and blew up the place just as Iraq finally go their oil fields opened up and ready for market. The invasion of Iraq was not about gaining access to oil, but restricting it. If all we wanted was oil, we could have just lifted the embargo and got all the oil we wanted.

Nah, this uptick in violence was expected. The question wasn't whether the remaining insurgents would mount an attack upon the government when the US drew down troops but whether the government would be able to handle the violence after we drew down our numbers. We'll find out soon enough depending on the performance of the Iraqi military and police.

I wouldn't compare this to a Tet Offensive either. Tet was shocking because it made what seemed like a simple policing action into a bloody mess. The US already had this moment earlier in this decade. Also, Tet had a highly organized opponent with heavy funding from outside powers. While Iraqi insurgents are a significant force, they have nowhere near the same level of funding, support, and organization than the VC did.
