I'm getting fitted for a knee brace next week. Anyone else use one? Anything I should be aware of or any advice?

Just look out for the redneck neighborhood kids throwing rocks at you and calling you stupid.

I was expecting this to be a BlackDog thread.

I don't know anything about knee braces, but I know a crap ton about braces and splints for hands and fingers because my son and I have both required them. In general, I think that it is very important to design a brace that meets your current needs and that it is fitted properly. It is also equally important to gradually build up a tolerance to wearing your new orthotic device and have it adjusted accordingly.

I sold knee and back braces for 3 years at my old job. Let me know if you have any questions. And why the fuck was there a language barrier?[Edited on July 14, 2010 at 1:35 AM. Reason : f]

There's not much to it. I got fit for a custom ACL knee brace. Just wear short shorts; if its anything like mine they'll get out a bulky contraption and be all over the place down there.

Oh good call on the shorts. I wouldn't have thought to bring a change of clothes with me.

Just make sure it doesn't slide around, and be a bitch about it if it doesn't feel right. It should.^^Haha those devices are ridiculous. If you have a decent shaped leg, you really only need to measure from 6 inches above the knee cap.[Edited on July 14, 2010 at 2:52 AM. Reason : f]

Ah. My leg is in good shape. Maybe the guy thought I was cute.

What's the knee brace for? After I recovered from my ACL surgery my surgeon told me I'd never need a brace for day to day things. He recommended I get a custom fitted orthopaedic knee brace to use for skiing my first season back, but I balked at the $500 cost I'd have to pay (thanks shitty insurance). Instead when I went skiing that year I used the brace I'd had before reconstruction surgery. Now, 2 years afterwards I don't ever wear a brace...for anything.

i had patellar tendonitis about a year ago...i bought a $20 brace from wally world and did 3 full weeks of running doses of ibuprofenworked great...had i known how easy it would be to "fix," i would have done it months earlier when the pain started

^^ It's for a skiing injury that I exacerbated last weekend hiking It won't be for day to day things, just when I'm playing sports or doing activities that tend to screw up my knee by the time I'm done. This brace isn't going to cost me nearly as much thank goodness. Love the gubnet healthcare I get right now

Ah cool. Well to answer your OP make sure it fits perfectly with no rubbing. Be picky about it and make sure it fits perfectly. You don't want it pinching your skin or causing abrasions or blisters.

I had one after knee surgery, had part of my meniscus removed. I wore it for about a month daily and about 3 months for sports. I still get knee soreness sometimes but the brace was too hot, and not comfortable at all. ( think that is the nature of this brace though, it puts pressure on one side of your knee to keep the bone on the other side from rubbing where the meniscus was removed) I just accepted I will have arthritis in 10 to 15 years according to the doctor. Surgery was in July of last year.

Well they made the plaster yesterday and I go in next Tuesday to having the final fitting and adjustments. It's going to have a strap thingy above the knee, one below the knee, and a vertical bar support thing on the outside side of my leg. Guy told me I'm only supposed to wear it on days my knee is hurting, which makes sense I suppose. The total cost is going to be $65. Is that a fair price?
