7/12/2010 4:25:14 PM

7/12/2010 4:46:41 PM
when I read "Lost/Stolen", I think "Got drunk and/or high and lost that shit"
7/12/2010 4:48:14 PM
Well it could be both.I lost my laptop. eg I left it on the park bench, forgot about it, looked everywhere for it, remembered that I left it on the park bench, and when I went to go get it it wasn't there. Someone stole my laptop.
7/12/2010 4:52:22 PM
No questions asked. Rat out your friends/ enemies(if they have it) and get $$$ for it.
7/12/2010 4:52:41 PM
^^wrong. Pretty sure you lost that shit by leaving it somewhere where it shouldn't have been. That's all on you.Quit blaming others for your problems.[Edited on July 12, 2010 at 4:53 PM. Reason : ^]
7/12/2010 4:53:25 PM
this is why i have that 190% insurance policy with stuff like computer, camera, ipod etc on it
7/12/2010 4:54:58 PM
^^ What the fuck is wrong with you? You think it's OK to take a laptop that's sitting unattended? A dollar bill (or a $20 bill) sitting on the ground in a parking lot with nobody around is one thing...its owner almost certainly doesn't know it's missing until long after he would even know where to start looking for it, and there's no way to trace it to the owner.A laptop, even they were dumb enough to walk off without it, isn't something that the owner is just going to flat-out lose and not even remember where to go back and check for it. On top of that, there's enough information on a laptop that you should be able to trace it to its owner unless it's password protected...and even then, you could put ads on Craigslist, local bulletin boards, etc, saying that you found it.If you take an unattended laptop, you're a goddamn common thief...no different from a shoplifter or burglar.

We do not live in some magical Utopia where random strangers are going to wipe your ass with rainbows. Dude made a mistake by leaving his shit in public and thus he got burned. I'm not saying I would take it if I saw it lying around, but you can't be blaming other people for your dumb mistakes.
7/12/2010 5:23:54 PM
I'm not saying it isn't a mistake. It doesn't justify theft, though.Neither am I saying that you have to wide a stranger's ass with rainbows. I'm saying that if you can't do a good deed, at least don't go around fucking people.[Edited on July 12, 2010 at 5:36 PM. Reason : saying it's his fault is like saying people deserved to get robbed for leaving stuff unlocked.]

If you're dumb enough to leave your laptop on a park bench, you deserve to get your shit stolen.

So if you found a wallet on the street, would you feel no moral obligation to return it to its owner?
7/13/2010 2:28:07 AM
Whoever found the laptop definitely isn't a thief for picking it up. They do have a moral obligation to make an effort to return it IMO, but you're a damn fool if you think everyone shares the same morals. The guy definitely lost it as opposed to having it stolen.I found an iPod touch in the Sam's Club parking lot a while back. I left a note at the customer service desk with my number and a lady called to claim it a little while later. Had she not called and had I not been able to find any other way to contact the owner I would not have felt like a thief at all for keeping it and enjoying it myself.
7/13/2010 5:35:37 PM
look at it this way, you now have a good excuse to trash that shitcan brand and get you a real computer.
7/13/2010 6:19:57 PM
I would love it if a stranger came and wiped my ass with rainbows[Edited on July 13, 2010 at 7:32 PM. Reason : d]

I found a wallet ON the road in Cary, on Piney Plains while out jogging one day.my gf and I drove to Holly Springs to take it to its rightful (very wealthy) owner. He was very gracious.offered me $40. I declined.that's the kind of nigga I'm is.
7/13/2010 7:38:11 PM
^ Yeah I used to work for a store that for some God unknown reason people were always forgetting their wallets there. If there was a driver's license in the wallet I would look up their number and tell them to come get their wallet. If there wasn't I'd call the bank of whatever credit card was in the wallet and tell them to contact their customer. Couple of times I got offered money bucks but I just want people to pay it forward
7/13/2010 7:46:59 PM
My wallet one time fell out of my pocket at a movie theater. I called the movie theater, they said they had it. I had a friend drive me down there (I was a lowly freshman who did not have a car at the time).I went and got it. I had no money in it, I had a debit card in it though. Everything was in there, except the debit card... Funny. Kind of a dumb thing to take from someone's wallet. I just called up and cancelled it that day.It was more of an inconvenience though, having to wait for a new debit card to arrive.

Another one of those threads that clearly identifies the difference between people with integrity, and the shitheads thieves with no sense of right and wrong.to the OP: I hope you find your laptop man, call the police and call around to the local pawn shops.

I don't know man. If you lose something I think you have to consider it a bit of luck if you get it back rather than an act of thievery if you don't. In the past 6 months I have FOUND an iPod touch and a cell phone; both of which I was able to return to their rightful owners. I neither asked for, received, nor expected a reward for either. I was glad to return them to their rightful owners, but I damn sure wouldn't let anyone call me a thief if I hadn't been able to link up with the owners and get them back to them. There has to be some personal responsibility for the person who loses something of value.[Edited on July 13, 2010 at 10:10 PM. Reason : l]
7/13/2010 10:09:28 PM
If you taped a piece of paper on it where you wrote "free to a good home", then it would not be considered stealing.......
7/13/2010 10:12:04 PM
I guess if you see something of value that has obviously been left behind by it's owner it is better to let it sit out in the rain until an unscrupulous person comes along and takes it than to pick it up yourself on the gamble that you'll keep it if you can't find the owner after a reasonable amount of effort. Otherwise you're a hardcore thief.
7/13/2010 10:19:25 PM
obviously.
7/13/2010 10:20:30 PM
As long as you leave a note behind you dont have to feel guilty....the note might blow away, not your fault....
7/13/2010 10:21:11 PM
Oh yeah, I found some guys car keys with the remote fob at the farmers market seafood restaurant the other day. I don't know why I found the owner and returned them to him rather than finding his car and stealing it as my thieving ass was compelled to do. I guess I'm slipping. I'm sure he would have rather I left his keys sitting on the floor near the cash registers because if you touch them you're a thief.
7/13/2010 10:25:08 PM
7/13/2010 10:26:39 PM
^ yeah that's really more of what I was getting at.
7/14/2010 9:54:10 AM
In the eyes of the law you are thief unless you are genuinely unable to find the owner, simple as that.
7/14/2010 11:12:30 AM
7/14/2010 11:30:17 AM
^I wouldn't call you a thief, just a bad, immoral person. I think it takes more effort to be an actual thief, just like it takes effort to be a good, moral person and try to return someone's lost goods. So you're lazy and not a good person because you won't take the extra effort to return someone's lost shit. But you are not a thief.[Edited on July 14, 2010 at 11:47 AM. Reason : .]

7/14/2010 11:48:22 AM
^Dude, it's okay. You don't get it. You want to blur a logical line to include morally repugnant acts in what we call "theft".Is it not theft. It may be wrong, immoral, immature, whatever, but it is not theft.
7/14/2010 11:57:14 AM
The laptop in this case doesn't become common property because someone left it on accident. What if it has something along the lines of "property of xx" - do you still not consider it stealing? You're still taking the property of someone wrongfully.
7/14/2010 12:06:53 PM
Anyone arguing that taking a laptop off a park bench is equivalent to forcibly breaking into someone's place of residence and stealing it is fucked in the head. This isn't Mayberry...if you leave an object of value fully visible in a public location, expect it to be gone when you return.
7/14/2010 12:09:49 PM
Look, nobody's arguing that. Everyone expects it to be stolen when you return. That it's common and can be expected has no impact on it being theft.
