FINALLY. That had to be one of the worst roads in Raleigh... Right now its all been ground up, so hopefully they will get to paving this weekend.
7/12/2010 8:19:48 AM
they ground up lake wheeler like two or three weeks ago and then just leftOUR WORK HERE IS DONE
7/12/2010 8:25:12 AM
y'all remember in cool hand luke when luke gets them boys fired up about mudding that road
7/12/2010 8:25:59 AM
Lake Wheeler is starting to look betterfor a few days, those drop offs before and after the bridge would jar the shit out of my car. it takes some serious impact to get a CD to skip these days....

THE ASPHALT GODS HAVE TRULY SMILED UPON US THIS SUMMER.
7/12/2010 8:44:17 AM
When they first started though they put down cones everywhere, but made the lanes super narrow, so you had to have one tire on the concrete curb... and now we have to play dodge the manholes that stick up about 3"... but a small price to pay for peaceful driving

7/12/2010 10:17:11 AM
If it's the same company doing both jobs they're probably going to pave all at once. The lanes that they have milled on Avent Ferry road are actually smoother driving than the existing lane.
7/12/2010 10:26:19 AM
(except for the manhole covers)
7/12/2010 10:27:18 AM
(Evade those)
7/12/2010 10:39:56 AM
i mean one could also suggest just evading the potholes too
7/12/2010 10:51:40 AM
Ah, so just take Gorman to Western and come back down. Gotcha.
7/12/2010 11:07:30 AM
I fear that this will turn out like Glenwood & 5 Points. It took them a day or two to "eat up" the old road, leaving a shitty rough road behind. Then nothing happened for 2 months. All of a sudden, they came in and paved everything in one week's time. Why didn't they just eat up and pave the road when they were ready as opposed to waiting 2+ months between demo and re-paving the roads?
7/12/2010 11:21:44 AM
It all depends on the contractor's schedule and/or when he can get asphalt. I think that with Wooten paving the new lanes on I-40, most of the asphalt plants around here swamped at night time.
7/12/2010 11:41:22 AM
I'm glad they're repaving Avent Ferry, but why the hell are there random raised rectangular sections jutting out on the left side of the left lane (when headed towards campus)? That shit will do a number to my car with its 40 sidewall profile tires (I've looked, they're not raised for manhole covers).I think I just need to avoid this road (and Lake Wheeler) till its all done.
7/12/2010 11:45:37 AM
The milling machine can't get close to utility covers so they have to stop, go over them, and then start again. Then a labor crew has go in and remove the asphalt around all the utility covers. Until that happens, they're rectangular raised areas.

drove by lake wheeler today just a little while ago...actually looks like they ARE paving it could be wrong, though
7/12/2010 12:13:56 PM
I drive Lake Wheeler every other day - they are most def giving it a major overhaulI would try to avoid it if possible
7/12/2010 12:18:42 PM

I feel like I'm on the go kart track when I drive down AF now. Switching lanes, back and forth, as I plow past all the cars that are going 30 MPH; swerving to avoid large bumps in the road, dodging cyclists...it's a lot of fun if you think about it.
7/12/2010 12:35:25 PM
^ Lol yea it takes some concentration especially in the mornings when the traffic is thicker...
7/12/2010 1:08:49 PM
7/12/2010 1:21:31 PM
^the damn things are like 4 feet wide. Really no way to avoid them without swerving outside your lane.
7/12/2010 2:11:24 PM
yea I noticed those too...ive gone over them a couple times, and they aren't as bad as hitting a manhole, but even still...
7/12/2010 2:12:35 PM
7/12/2010 2:13:26 PM
^ they paved one of the four lanes today
7/12/2010 4:38:14 PM
Get the Lake Wheeler paving talk out of the Avent Ferry thread.
7/12/2010 4:46:54 PM
Did anyone actually call the number posted on that sign between Chappell and Varsity? The one that says "CALL DOT AND DEMAND REPAVING"maybe it finally got through to them
7/12/2010 5:21:36 PM
When they finally complete the paving, it'll be great--until they have to tear it up again when a water main bursts in the winter.
7/12/2010 5:46:21 PM
I drove by those rectangular things in the road slowly to see what they were, its a small round metal cap, maybe for utility access?
7/13/2010 8:08:37 AM
just as stated before, all the non-milled asphalt is due to utilities (manholes & other accesses - for valves, air releases, etc). though for some reason, they left huge rectangles around the smaller accesses.... someone got lazy I've seen companies leave large areas around manholes... but these guys did the opposite... maybe they're doing that so they can find all the smaller accesses...and that shit is fun as hell to drive on at about 55-65 mph in my truck.[Edited on July 13, 2010 at 8:24 AM. do not want. It's like I'm doing the slalom on my way to work every morning.
7/13/2010 8:30:42 AM
the spot where you go straight past athens towards lake johnson is a bit trickyif you stay in the carved area, you end up in the opposite side's left turn lane
7/13/2010 8:47:27 AM
Non Civils: The asphalt was ground up/carved/eat up!Civils: The asphalt was milled. Non civils: that ground up/carved/ate up asphalt is sure hard to drive on.Civils:

The worst part seems to be that they broke the sensor for cars at the Lake Dam, Pineview Dr. I can sit there for a full 5 minutes now. I've given up and just run the red light now.
7/13/2010 8:53:51 AM
^ I live at The Summit which is right at that corner, and I swear that light has gotten much much longer... I now sit in a line of like 8 cars every morning...

Thanks for the picture of the machine that grinds, works, treats, or shapes asphalt. I'm going to one up you with Wikipedia:
7/13/2010 2:03:16 PM
Yea, you could. I guess ground up is the closest to milled. I'm just used to seeing it on written on construction documents I guess. "Mill existing asphalt X inches..."It's also what asphalt and grading contractors say so I like to keep it consistent.

This has/had to be the worst road in raleigh. and I think they only have enough money to screw it up even more and leave it like that. They haven't touched it in a week!
