Okay, so I figured we could do a thread of little random nuggets of information that we find in our daily escapades. We can post them here and talk shit to each other for not knowing already!I'll start.TIL that there are a ton of sysinternals and misc tools (like autoruns and tcpview) for download at http://live.sysinternals.com/ via direct links with no clutter.
6/30/2010 12:14:55 PM
TIL that microsoft did a good thing for the world and took newsid.exe out of the sysinternals toolkit.

i learned yesterday you can connect local drives during a remote desktop session]
6/30/2010 12:32:57 PM
TIL, ... TBC.But for the OP, hopefully I won't be patronizing when I list this assuming you don't have it on your flash drive already.http://launcher.nirsoft.net/download.html + http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/SysinternalsSuite.zip=win

TIL you can get Windows Defender to update its own definition file rather than bothering me via Windows Update every few days
7/2/2010 6:51:20 PM
I like to hoard my knowledge. sorry guys.
7/2/2010 8:14:58 PM
^^You should have moved on to Microsoft Security Essentials by now
7/2/2010 8:31:58 PM
Attn: users with <10 posts.... oh.. wait... n/m... yea, use MSE
7/2/2010 9:22:40 PM
i would use MSE if i actually wanted malware protection. the only reason i have windows defender and get its constant windows updates in the first place is cus it comes installed with windows.
7/2/2010 9:45:06 PM
Microsoft Security Essentials is the successor to Windows Defender; I have installed both of them over the years (my laptop and desktop run XP and therefore do not come with Defender). Then again after noticing how much in system resources they were consuming, I disabled Defender, and then after installing MSE and noticing the same result, I disabled it too; I'm very careful and mostly rely on non-resident security programs that only use resources when I ask them to, like MalwareBytes, SpywareBlaster, Spybot with TeaTimer disabled, and ComboFix in a pinch. If you'd rather not have Windows Defender running all of the time, set its service to Manual with services.msc and keep it from starting up with msconfig; it's similar for MSE but the name of that service is "Microsoft Antimalware Service". For both of them, the executable that uses most of your resources is called "MsMpEng.exe" but you can't end the process directly from the Task Manager. At least it's not like Norton or McAfee, which you would have to disable with a special program like Autoruns from within Safe Mode.If you do run Vista or later as I'm assuming now, consider yourself fortunate that you don't have to open a browser just to go to Microsoft Update (even Firefox or Chrome with IE Tab is a hassle, but easier than Internet Explorer).

I learned not to put commas at the end of javascript arrays or IE will drive you to the brink of insanity.-No errors in Firefox.-No errors in Chrome.-No errors in Firebug.-Multiple errors in IE with no code snippets and bullshit line numbers that don't mean a thing.btw, does anybody use Ext-JS?[Edited on July 8, 2010 at 6:07 PM. you can use the F2 key to rename files in windows. o.0
7/9/2010 8:59:16 AM
^oh sweet. That will save me a buttload of time Wonder if it works in Ubuntu too....
7/10/2010 4:17:17 AM
After trying to run Kindle on Ubuntu by forcing it through WINE and Crossover, then trying to run it on an Andriod emulator yesterday, today I found that I can just run XP through VirtualBox. Der..
7/10/2010 12:43:50 PM
and it's not that hard to get a legitimate (albeit time-limited) virtual image, via the "App Compat VHD" program to test compatibility of web apps with IE6, IE7, or IE8Anyway today I learned that easily-cracked passwords are surprisingly common: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThePasswordIsAlwaysSwordfish
7/10/2010 1:34:30 PM
last week I learned that there is a great enough aluminum/titanium CTE delta at 50C to shift my encoder's rotor height enough to induce a significant DC offset in the encoder sin/cos output to screw the position math up and thus my scanner gets lost at high temp. Glad i caught that before it went on a Predator aircraft. hyuck hyuck hyuck...I thank God every day i don't do the bullshit you guys are talking about.

you must have forgotten the headlight fluid
7/10/2010 3:47:22 PM
^ yes, low headlight fluid levels is the leading cause of automobile accidents!
7/10/2010 5:48:12 PM
That instead of having to download an image and then re-upload it on another site, I can just paste the URL in the file location prompt and save myself hassle. Can't believe I didnt know that.

^^^^I had no idea either; I thout that was only for those sites that specifically allowed it, like imgurso I guess doing it this way sends the image to your cache if necessary and then from cache to imagehost

7/11/2010 8:53:25 PM
What's funny is, I had always WISHED it would work that way, because it was super intuitive, but I figured that it wouldn't just off of principle, so I never even tried it. Then I saw that you COULD do it posted on Lifehacker, and my interaction pattern (even though it wasnt original) was vindicated. It's really bad when you just can't tell things right off the bat, though.
7/11/2010 9:12:05 PM
^^The parallel URI would be file:///c:/documents/image.jpg
7/11/2010 10:12:39 PM
I am pretty sure it hasn't always been this way, I remember trying it years ago. But I am happy to hear it is now supported.
7/11/2010 10:21:32 PM
I recall it working on Windows 98
7/11/2010 10:33:04 PM
pretty sure it's worked on xp for a while now.

TIL - Duplicate SIDs are an issue still on DC servers should you wind up in that situation. Which is good to know.If you add a mailbox role to your CAS/HUB for Exchange - turn IIS compression off (which is on by default if you install CAS/HUB roles initially). If you get through the stupidity of making Exchange 2010 and 2007 run on 2008 server over VMWare just once - ......the rest of the department thinks you're an expert and will never leave you be.EWS & WebDav are not exclusive configurations - you can run both on Exchange 2007. (in hindsight, this was obvious)
