You can get rid of the paragraph symbol and dots for spaces via:Click Windows icon thingClick Word Options at the bottomGo to the Display tabUncheck anything you don't want under 'Always display these formatting marks on the screen'Maybe you want them there and that's why you didn't bring them up. The selected text color appears to be a function of Windows, not Word:Right-click desktopPropertiesAppearanceAdvancedIn the drop down menu called "Item:" select "Selected Item"Change the color/style to what you want it to beHit Ok until all the dialogs go away.Skinnier text?Go to the home tabExpand Font by clicking the bottom-right cornerIt should bring up font options like spacing and kerning[Edited on June 22, 2010 at 2:47 PM. Here is another screenshot. Look at the "C" in "Choose." It is far skinnier than the other letters, which has not occurred in the past. The text is supposed to have yellow highlighting and formatting symbols.

i am most likely not qualified to help, but maybe it's a display/video adapter problem...?
