I'm 5'6'', about 150lbs, and I've had a personal trainer for about 2 months so I'm slim but fit. Even when I buy fitted shirts in my neck and waist size at retail the arms are blousy and there's definitely extra material on the sides for another 1/2 person. Is there anywhere that carries Euro-cut dress shirts in the area or does anyone have any experience with Wang's Tailor doing their shirts (I've only ever had them take in pants)? Thanks.

first question, where are you buying shirts that are neck size and waist size and not neck size and sleeve length.second question, what is your neck size and sleeve length.third question, what kind of budget are we talking
5/20/2010 7:51:22 PM
1) sorry, the 32" is the sleeve length not my waist size but still, I don't even think I'm a 32 if that's the smallest there is and thats what i usually get2) i know my neck is a 163) budget is under a benjamin

you can easily buy tailored fitted shirts for less than a hundred bucks apiece, provided you go to the right place. they'll fit you like a glove.

very helpful. other than not naming a place.

I think a good bet might be places like Saks and Nordstrom. I used to wear MX shirts from express back in the day for the fit, but they are gaudy and material is for shit. Benetton makes some pretty nice shirts and they've held up well and fit great. I tried Brooks Brothers slim cut fits, the material is by far the best but the fit is still huge.

For something affordable, Brooks Brothers sells a 'slender fit' cut in a lot of shirts. It is tapered in the middle, and look great.

most manufacturers have some dress shirts labeled as "slim fit/cut" or even "extra slim fit/cut".check Banana Republic (i actually have one from them). very nicely cut.are european brands sold in the US, such as Next, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Zara, Pierre Cardin? and what about the expensive brands such as Hugo Boss, Lanvin, Christian Dior, Gian Franco Ferre, Gucci, etc? they all make very good stuff. and the first list isn't expensive... $50-80 would get you a superb shirt.(i am sure they are sold in big cities and fancy mall boutiques, but i am asking about smaller cities such as raleigh, charlotte, etc)

Try Varsity Men's Wear at North Hills. Great place to get nice clothes.
5/20/2010 8:55:34 PM
hmmm Brooks Brothers seems to have an extra slim option as well...i might go on Saturday[Edited on May 20, 2010 at 9:01 PM. Reason : nvm, just called and it takes 2 weeks even if they measure you right there on the spot, could be 6-8]
5/20/2010 8:57:33 PM
how fitted do you want your shirt? i like those brooks brothers shirts too but no one will be confusing it for bespoke tailoring. if those are tight enough for you +1 for recommendation.nordstrom is a good recommendation but your price range will limit the selection a lot there. if you go with brooks brothers wait for the next sale, there are usually good deals on shirts.
5/20/2010 8:57:50 PM
i want it VERY fitted. something i can wear with an adjustable button up vest with no jacket, so no puff at all!
5/20/2010 9:03:38 PM
Then brooks brothers won't do. Unless they custom tailor it.[Edited on May 20, 2010 at 9:06 PM. Reason : m]
5/20/2010 9:05:45 PM
yeah thats what my edit was for, i called to see what they could do about custom fit and they couldnt do it in less than 2 weeks and i need it in a week and half
5/20/2010 9:08:24 PM
varsity's looks promising, again if they can get it done in time. Wang's only takes like 3-4 days to do everything to my pants, maybe I can bring them a BB shirt and they can get it done
5/20/2010 9:12:04 PM
just go to varsity mens wear, harry will hook it up[Edited on May 20, 2010 at 10:03 PM. Reason : oh snap they got up out of crabtree now]

Oh, there's a time deadline. That presents an issue, too, although a good tailor can easily have a shirt back to you in less than a week if they want to. Most of the guys around here don't have any sense of urgency, though. Don't go to a store that sells stuff off the rack, and don't go to a tailor who only does alterations and stuff. You want to find a tailor who actually makes clothes. I don't get anything made locally, so I couldn't tell you any names, but you can do some legwork and call a few places around. If you really want a well fitted shirt, they need to make it for you specifically, based on your measurements. NOTHING off the rack will be what you want, no matter how it is adjusted. It's not a suit, which only has to fit at a handful of points. You're looking for everything about this to match your specs. I doubt many people on here have a local tailor who makes their suits and clothes, so you probably won't get too much help with specific names. Do a little looking online and then call up a handful of places and tell them what you want and if they can't do it, ask them to recommend someone who can.

H&M make a lot of european cut shirts, they arent the best quality of course, but you get what you pay for. The products they sell here are actually the same products sold in their european H&M stores

why dont you just grow?

I'm 5'7", 150lbs, and wear a 15/32. The tailored cut at Jos. A Banks is perfect for me. However, I feel like I make it look more "slim fit" than it is because I have very broad shoulders and chest.Either way, it's a damn good shirt for a good price (because they ALWAYS have sales)...and I'm big into the "slim cut" look.
5/21/2010 10:16:20 AM
along those lines brooks brothers has made the slim cut shirts for years now, and now they have "extra slim cut".i prefer the finishing and overall cut of brooks brothers shirts for a standard everyday shirt. they're sub $100 and of slightly better quality than the jos a. bank shirts (which is basically the only thing they make that isnt cut for gross, fat, overweight dudes who can't tell the difference and think everything should be pleated)
5/21/2010 1:25:08 PM
i just got back from brooks brothers and the extra slim fit was perfect. luckily i'm a small and that's all they had left. also the neck was a little too small but they will loosen it up for you for free in about 5 min so it was well worth it.

I'll have to take some of these suggestions in here and pick up some new shirts. I too am a fan of slim cut shirts and am usually annoyed by the bagginess that I have in most dress shirts I get.

Brooks Brothers slim fit is where it's at. 15 1/2 35 represent

I try to stock up on the Express 1mx Fitted shirts. They come in (1) 1mx modern fit, and (2) 1mx fitted. The fitted is more, well, fitted and is a slimmer cut. Ive found its the best fit for me (6'0, 170). I have a banana republic fitted shirt or two, and I like them, but theyre not as fitted as the 1mx fitted. Plus, they usually go on sale every couple months, usually something like 2 for 50 or 60. They usually have some for sale online as well, like 25 bucks or so. The issue, which was stated earlier, is that they have some awfully gaudy patterns.

I take all my dress shirts to Mrs. Wang so that she can take the sides in and fit the shirt to my torso......she does it for $8 per shirt and i get a shirt that fits my body perfectly. She'll slim down the sleeves for just another $1
