I was wondering the same thing actually. My only guess was that it was so people could move it from Wii to Wii (like you wanted to watch a flick at a friends house).

You will be able to do that by Christmas. Xbox and Netflix were exclusive, but somehow using a disc for Wii and PS3 circumvents the exclusivity deal, which ends Q4 2010 I believe. At that point you'll be able to download and scrap the disc.

i hear the best resolution you can get on these videos is 640x480 in 256 colors

you know, cause the Wii's graphics suck compared to 360 and PS3

get it

I don't mind the picture quality so much.. I'd rather have this than be looking at a buffering icon every 30 seconds

Streams very nicely right now...

^Actually its pretty fucking good. For some of the old TV shows that I have played on my plasma, I have little room to complain. For the convenience factor its much better than plugging my computer in to stream.

the only thing i don't like so far is the very limited selection of viewable movies.

yah, the movie selection is almost pitiful. But I figure it will get better with time. And I have not even really tried to watch a movie since I got it. Mostly been sticking to X-Files and Doctor Who.

Overall, the TV selection is really great and i figure thats what most ppl will use it for.

If you have the homebrew channel with usb loader, netflix can be installed and booted off of it instead.

I don't install homebrew because there are a million different devices that will do exactly the same thing. Not to mention its against ToS and they legally disable your shit if they catch you. And don't you have to worry about which updates you install?

Its a device to play Wii games and some VC stuff. Not much else for me.

their tv show selection is a little better

and you know the ones listed on the wii/ps3/xbox are not the only titles available, right? it only shows a few categories, its best to find stuff online and add them to your instant que.

true...but i've already paid for the wii, why would i pay more money to do something i can already do?

Quote :
"Not to mention its against ToS"

i can't think of a single thing that makes me care about what nintendo thinks i should and should not be able to do with the console that i bought and now own

Quote :
"they legally disable your shit if they catch you."

how so? all they can do is break the hack with a new update...aside from that, they'd have to turn your wii into a doorstop to actually DO anything about you hacking it...and they won't

Quote :
"And don't you have to worry about which updates you install?"

now this is true...i definitely disable automatic updates for this reason...but since i can't really think of any advantages they were providing me in the first place, this isn't a concern of mine

to each their own...i certainly take no issue with people limiting themselves if it makes them happy...it just happens to make ME happy to use my console to its full potential

^ what do you do with homebrew that makes it worth the hassle?

^ initially, i did it so that i could play actual video DVDs (i mean, it came with a DVD drive, didn't it?) and set it up to act as a media center (before i had an HTPC, which is obviously more powerful and capable)...it makes a great BASIC media center (which you might enjoy if you don't already have an HTPC)...i know that at one point, the wii (using mplayer ce) would play more videos than the ps3 or xbox 360, but i have no idea about whether that's true now or not

don't get me wrong...there are certainly other devices that do natively what the wii does not...but if you want some additional basic functionality without wanting a full-throttle media center, the wii (with an external hard drive) is a great option

there are a fair number of useless apps, no doubt, but there are some good ones, too...here's a list of apps, if you're interested: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_applications

then we get to the possibly dishonest part of homebrew...pirating games...i, for one, feel entitled to every NES, SNES, N64, and GC (among other consoles) game that i paid for, so i download whatever ROMs i want and play them on my wii using the appropriate emulator (http://www.wiiiso.com/emulators.php)...you can also download wii ISOs (if you feel so inclined) and burn them to their own DVD or play them off an external hard drive

also, i'm not sure "hassle" is a good description...it took 10 minutes and i've only updated it once

again, to each their own

I am either going to get netflix for the wii or PS3.

do they both have the same selection of videos?

and which one should i get the disc for? ps3 or wii?

and what is the point of an instant queue if you can "instantly" watch anything? Can't you constantly add and delete stuff off of it?

^i view the instant queue as more of a reminder list of stuff to watch at a later date. really the order doesn't matter.

watching 24 season 1 through our bluray player, and the picture quality is excellent.

I really hope the movie selections get better though.

otherwise, wii

[Edited on June 11, 2010 at 7:48 AM. Reason : wait... does the ps3 have access to the netflix hd streams?]
