Thoughts? What are some entertaining things to do or places to go for college grads? Where are the good places to live?I figure it is close enough to Greenville that most of the people in their 20s just go to the bars in Greenville.

get a boat and learn to fish[Edited on May 14, 2010 at 2:15 PM. Reason : why would anyone go to greenville?]

I live there, right by Brices Creek. the nightlife sucks something awful, although the Deck Party at the Hilton (old Sheraton) is pretty decent in the summer (though it shuts down fairly early). There are a couple of pretty good restaurants downtown, and the downtown is just generally a pretty neat area (save the near total lack of good bars). If you like boating, waterskiing, the beach, etc, it's a blast when it's warm. When it's cold outside, it's a really boring place to live. Plan on skipping town on the weekends regularly.[Edited on May 14, 2010 at 2:29 PM. Reason : ]

5/14/2010 2:44:38 PM
I was born there, and I have family there. It sucks unless you're rich.

New Bern is a nice town to visit for a day and walk around. Like a miny Charleston without ANY nightlife. I cannot imagine that it is a good place for a young single person to live. My wife and I love New Bern, but we only really experience the nice downtown area and only for short weekend trips.Plus my wife likes Nicholas Sparks so that makes it more special to her.[Edited on May 14, 2010 at 2:53 PM. They have a Target, and an IHOP. Next to each other. Did I blow your mind?
5/14/2010 7:15:42 PM
^ Zoning ordinances don't allow that combination.
5/14/2010 7:38:38 PM
Oops, they better tear one of them down.
5/14/2010 7:44:02 PM
you can jump off of the new bridgedon't get caught!
5/14/2010 9:21:28 PM
They'd be able to tell if you jumped off of the new bridge... You'd come out of the Neuse River looking all mutated and gross.
5/14/2010 9:30:47 PM
oh, is the red tide back again?
5/14/2010 9:44:12 PM
Did it ever leave? I mean the bridge is really only like a mile from the major sewage discharge location for the city.
5/14/2010 9:45:22 PM
There's actually something interesting going on in New Bern...13-15th has been the annual Grand National Meet of the Antique Automobile Club of America, which is supposed to be good. I haven't gone, I might go today because I think my Dad has a VIP ticket or something. In any case, it's also their 300th anniversary or something.
5/15/2010 3:25:16 AM
It's also the Harley bike rally at the fairgrounds this weekend
5/15/2010 9:47:44 AM
wow. they can fit more rednex in that place?
5/15/2010 9:59:22 AM
it's looking a little nicer since the drawbridge opened up, but after growing up there...
5/15/2010 9:53:14 PM
^^ There are more rednecks in Pamlico, Carteret and Johnson counties than in Craven county. I thought you knew that.
5/15/2010 9:55:01 PM
haha did ScubaSteve end up moving there?
5/15/2010 10:03:54 PM
nope not yet, i was just getting an idea of what to expect/prepare for. but i might be moving there if i get a job there... job market sucks now not sure if i could pass up a job just cuz the location is crappyplus the company has other better places i could transfer to.[Edited on May 16, 2010 at 12:11 AM. 5/15/2010 11:58:07 PM
if i might offer a word of advice... the location needs to be a serious consideration in your deliberations, even if you're having trouble finding work elsewhere. if you move to some place where you aren't going to be happy, then you're going to be miserable at work and at home. i've kinda made that mistake myself, and now work is about all i have going for me.
5/16/2010 12:11:19 AM
yea this whole thread is because i am seriously considering location in the job choice. like i said i am still not sure.I am also looking at the Job Quality, Company Quality, and Ability to move international..[Edited on May 16, 2010 at 12:34 AM. Reason : .]
5/16/2010 12:32:52 AM
if this is a job where you will be traveling tremendously and perhaps home on the weekends, it may work outotherwise, unless you're 65 and drawing a pension, keep on truckin
5/16/2010 12:35:06 AM
so noone drives from new bern to greenville to find stuff to do? i knew people that would do that when they lived in raleigh..also i dont even know if they will offer me the job yet so i may be premature on this thread.
5/16/2010 1:38:22 AM
You'll spend more of your time visiting Greenville, Jacksonville and Morehead City/Atlantic Beach if you want to go shopping for more than basics. There's a lot of "daylight" culture to be had in New Bern, in terms of all the touristy things. But after dark, it's basically all on MLK Blvd, Trent Rd or Neuse Blvd. There's a bit of nightlife downtown, but it's sporadic and physically separated.Basically, it's fine if you're going there to raise a family or retire. If you're moving there and you're single, and appreciate doing more than working, you're gonna get bored with Wal-Mart and the mall pretty damn fast.
5/16/2010 1:48:24 AM
as close as you are, you might as well just go to the beach instead of fucking greenville
5/16/2010 1:49:17 AM
of course people drive to greenville, jacksonville, atlantic beach, wilmington, raleigh to get the fuck out of NB and find something to dobut that shit gets old as crap driving home at 3:30 am, trying not to hit a fucking flock of deer or get pulled over by Johnny Lawdog whose mouth is just watering to "git 'im some"Sometimes it's just nice to not to have to drive 45 minutes, one way and then another 45 minutes back but, by all means, goats 'head on

5/16/2010 2:22:46 AM
People that know folks in Gville?
5/16/2010 2:25:37 AM
Yeah that's all I can think of. The two times I went out to Greenville I was wondering why the hell I wasted my time going out to Greenville lol.
5/16/2010 2:26:43 AM
The only time I ever drove from Raleigh to Greenville was when I was a Freshman and knew it would result in a ton of beer and skanky broads.I was... not incorrect, but it wasn't.
5/16/2010 2:38:32 AM
I grew up in the boonies between Greenville and Vanceboro. If food, shopping, and clubs are important to you, you're going to want to live in or around Greenville. New Bern is about an hour from Greenville, so you're not really going to drive to Greenville to go clubbing unless you have somewhere local to crash. It's not uncommon for people to live in the Greenville area and commute to another town in Eastern NC for work. Commuting an hour in the boonies is *nothing* like driving I40 on a daily basis. It's no stress.
5/16/2010 7:58:38 AM
I'd be more inclined to drive to Morehead/Beaufort/Atlantic Beach, or Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, or Raleigh if you're willing to drive a little more.Point is, there is minimal nightlife in New Bern during the summer, and pretty much zero for the rest of the year. Other than that, it's a cool place to live when it's warm (if you like the water), but sucks when it isn't.
5/16/2010 11:50:30 AM
has anyone taken the new hwy 43 route on the glenburnie side of new bern? I would assume it's a lot faster.
5/16/2010 11:52:47 AM
it doesn't matter if it's faster or notYAY I CAN DRIVE FROM NEW BERN TO VANCEBORO IN 2 MINUTES LESS NOWstill ain't shit to do
5/16/2010 12:36:06 PM
yep taking the job in new bern so looks like this topic is relevant now.I think I might be able to find something 1 bedroom cheaper in Greenville than New Bern but idk
5/23/2010 9:19:55 PM
... and commute an hour to work every day? dude, there's NOTHING between Greenville and New Bern... save yourself some trouble.
5/23/2010 10:29:24 PM
you won't be saving anything if you spend 2 hours in the car driving back and forth to work everydaythat's just dumb
5/23/2010 11:26:15 PM
Maybe he really likes his car.
