Who else just learned that it REQUIRES a case INsensitive file system?

wait, wat?

Interesting...

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14908890

I love that people in that thread are suggesting reinstalling Mac OS X. I couldn't find a reference to a case-insensitive filesystem being a requirement to install. Did I miss it?

I now see that they're including a little NOTE at the end of the system requirements for Mac games, talking about the case-sensitivity issue. Small print, gray text on a black background. Nope, this won't be easy to miss.

The default is case insensitive...why would you do otherwise?

When working with other case sensitive files sytems it is easier to just keep that functionality.

Either way, it isn't like my MacBook v1.1 would do too well running Portal anyway!

a lot of apps break on case sensitive file systems.

I recall an issue with Adobe and Office for mac at one point.

i got it and d/led Portal for free. I'd have to say it runs like shit on my early '08 MBP. thats a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of ram, and a 8400gtm or something video card.

plenty of programmers will argue your face off in support of case sensitivity. i'm not saying they're right or wrong... but anyway.

the UI seems a little rushed/slow... but it's still cool to see Steam moving to different OS's.. just wish my MBP wasn't on its deathbed. she's had a good run, but 4 years and a lot of abuse takes a toll. not to mention the POS ATI x1600 joke-of-a-graphics-card it has

Geez. What kind of system are you going to need to run a game that's almost 3 years old?

This is either half cocked or Apple again is denying the API's needed to make it happen.

If anyone runs Torchlight on a MacBook let me know how it performs.

^^ you're talkin about a not-wonderful gfx card + a game that was just ported to a new OS; i wouldn't expect a whole lot

yes. Any 4 year old hardware should run torchlight and portal (or any other source game) just fine.

Haven't tried torchlight but portal runs very smoothly on my MBP. By default it set all the graphics to the highest (recommended)

Torchlight runs on atom-based netbooks. There shouldn't be any performance issues.

I've been gaming on the Mac for quite some time and haven't had any issues. I mean, it is a laptop so I'm not going to be running at max graphics on a game like crysis (haven't played it) and SC2 requires medium settings.

A game like portal or torchlight should be a piece of cake. Steam hasn't brought anything new to the table, there were already games on the Mac. What they did do was bring an easier way to manage and purchase your games which I am all for.

^^ Torchlight will run on my netbook ASUS 1005HA only 'Netbook' mode, and then it still has performance issues and I exceed every minimum spec by quite a bit.

It runs on my Mini 10v hackintosh. It doesn't run quite perfectly, but it's well enough to play.

I have a 2 year old imac running boot camp with windows 7 and it seems steam runs smoother on the windows side. When I am playing portal for instance I see it running smoother on 7 than osx. I will see when the rest of the valve stuff comes out and test it out.

You have an 8600m GT. Apple never provided a 8400m GT in any laptop model.

I have a similar Mac. I have a Macbook Pro, 2.2 Ghz C2D, 8600m GT (128mb VRAM), 2 gigs of RAM, and Portal runs fine on it. Just be sure to change the settings. V-Sync is on by default, and it will instantly kill your FPS and make the game unplayable, so disable V-Sync in the graphics options. I hear that disabling color correction makes a big difference to (and I don't see a difference graphical wise with it on or off).

There is/was a bug with the rendering engine that was introduced in one of the patches that made the portal holes black. The fix is to run in windowed mode by right clicking on the game in steam, going to properties, and under "set launch options" type "-windowed" (no quotes around it). This worked for me and many other users.

It is important to note that the game IS buggy. Remember, it was a port, and it will take some time to get all the bugs out. I believe there was an update for the game today, as I noticed it performing a lot better with less stutters.

I'd like to say that Mac finally has something worthwhile on their computers now, but I'll have to see it in action first.

They've had a lot of worthwhile things for a while now. This is merely one more.

Macs will likely never be the computer of choice for most gamers, and that's fine. So long as Mac OS X gets to see a reasonable share of popular games, I think Mac owners will remain happy. And everyone else can just Boot Camp it into Winders.
