yoshi died this morning. i woke up and he was swollen all over. his skin felt like it had bubbles and he had a hard time breathing. we took him to the emergency vet but he freaked out when they took him to xray, arrested, they did cpr, he didn't come back. he's gone.we don't know what happened. the vet had never seen or heard of anything like this. she said he could be a trachea tear, but didn't see any. his airway was very swollen, as was the rest of his tissues, and she suggested it could be some weird severe anaphalactic shock/allergy reaction. we've searched the house and the yard. we can't find anything he got into or could have eaten. the vet also said major trauma, like being hit by a car w/ broken ribs, could cause it, but found no evidence of trama, broken bones, or punctures. the xray showed nothing broken/foreign objects.the xray showed all the air trapped in him. it was literally actually really EVERYWHERE. you could even feel it on his head, feet, his little stub of a tail. everywhere except his ears. there was air trapped b/w his lungs and ribcage, and it was squishing his heart. he was fine last night. fine when i went to bed at 11. fine when chris went to bed at 2am.we are taking him the nc dept of ag veterinary diagnostic lab now. hopefully they can tell us what happened. zoe, monkey, and the dogs are fine.i can't believe my little boy is gone. he's gone. god fucking damn it that's him on the right/blog[Edited on May 9, 2010 at 12:30 PM. Let us know the lab results, and maybe we can prevent this from happening to other cats.I'm attached to my cat, so this freaks me out.
5/9/2010 12:56:59 PM
Something congenital perhaps?
5/9/2010 12:57:24 PM
I grieve with you. I fear losing my own pet one day, even though it is inevitable.
5/9/2010 12:57:54 PM
Oh, no!God I'm so sorry.He was a pretty boy.
5/9/2010 12:59:51 PM
There are more pics of him in my gallery in the pets folder. He was a very pretty cat. He was MY boy. We were very attached to each other. The vet also suggested maybe he was born with a bulla...a pocket of air in his lungs...and that something just caused it to rupture. I hope the diagnostic lab finds something, esp if there's any chance it could be a reaction or allergy to a household item. We didn't find anything torn up, out of place, eaten into, etc. I hope they figure it out
5/9/2010 1:09:45 PM
Very sorry to hear. Hopefully like you said nothing is amiss.
5/9/2010 1:13:43 PM
sorry
5/9/2010 1:41:27 PM
He was a very handsome cat! That's horrible how suddenly everything happened, I'm so sorry. How old was he? Was he an indoor/outdoor cat? Had he been to the vet or anesthetized recently? The only way I know of these things happening is by a tracheal tear or lung trauma/puncture/wound. They typically don't crop up suddenly like this and don't often cause death if dealt with. I think it's really good that you decided to get a necropsy done, a lot of ppl don't opt for that, I think it's really helpful in bringing closure.
5/9/2010 1:47:46 PM
He was almost 2 like I mentioned before. He was an indoor cat but went outside w me yesterday to do some yard work. He didn't get into anything, just laid there in the dirt like his normal self. The vet couldnt find any sign of trauma other than the air thing. He was fine at 2am, sleeping on his bed next to the dog crates. Unless he fell off of something or injured himself otherwise I don't know what happened. We just dropped him off at the diagnostic lab on blue ridge. They have a cooler outside that you put tr animal in then leave the form in a drawer. Not fun[Edited on May 9, 2010 at 2:20 PM. Reason : ]

Interesting. I'll add this to the list of spontaneous and horribly painful ways I can die.

I'm giving my cat hugs now, how sad!
5/10/2010 9:01:38 AM
On the bright side, you can now go adopt another cat and give it a better life than living in a cage.
5/10/2010 9:08:41 AM
i already have 1 indoor and 1 outdoor, and 2 dogs. there's also a stray kitten roaming around my & my neighbor's yard (that i'm trying to get someone to adopt...anybody want her? she's already been spayed & had a rabies shot). i'm not getting another cat until we move.yoshi was such a unique cat. he really was more like a dog. he came when you called him, would fetch & bring you his favorite toy when we wanted to play, loved everybody, not afraid of anything. if you dropped something or there was a loud noise, he ran towards it to see what it was. he wrestled with the dogs, one of whom he used to knead on when he was a baby like she was his momma. he was a BIG boy and was part manx (he had only about 3" of a tail, which he wagged very fast when he was happy to see you). there's no way to replace him.[Edited on May 10, 2010 at 9:37 AM. Yoshi sounds so much like my cat Mindy - all exactly the same, except she doesn't wag her tail. I'm always afraid I'll never find another cat like her, and fear the day I'm in your shoes. I'm so sorry <3For what it's worth, I'm crying for the three of you - every time I open this thread.

i just got a call with the preliminary results from the lab.the found nothing. the cause of death was pneumothorax, which we knew, but there was no evidence of trauma, no allergic reaction, no chemical/toxin reaction, no bulla, nothing. she filled his trachea & lungs w/ fluid and found no leaks. she said it takes a lot of force from a sharp object to cause a tracheal tear, him chewing on a toy or something would not cause it, there wasn't a tear anyway. no underlying congenital or hereditary condition. she said there are cases of this just happening out of nowhere and that we might never get any actual results. they're still working on some pathology results, which they'll have later this week. the cremation service is picking him up this afternoon and he said we'll have him back by the end of the week.how in the world does this happen OUT OF NOWHERE? plz spare me the jeebus says it's his time to go crap.if he was old and the lung tissue was weak or something, i could maybe understand, but he wasn't even 2. they said all of his organs and tissues and internal structure were normal. what.the.fuck.

5/10/2010 7:04:32 PM
That's awful. I'm so sorry.

I hope your other cat is doing well too, it may get lonely since it was used to having Yoshi around My cat got very needy, and had to be around people after his sister died.[Edited on May 10, 2010 at 9:38 PM. Reason : k]

we've been watching her and she seems to be fine. my dog suki, who yoshi loved and they were really close, seemed to be looking for him this evening. she walked up to zoe and sniffed her, then walked around to all the spots yoshi used to lay/hang out, the litter box, food bowl, etc. it was heartbreaking.
5/10/2010 10:15:36 PM
Oh god.
