I guess I'm confused as to what the big deal is about though. Is there really any genuine ingenuity involved? And wouldn't you expect these results from what they did? Was there a point to doing this or a reason (other than cost or practicality) that someone else hadn't done this?I'm not trying to be a dick either, I'm genuinely asking those questions. Just from a cursory glance over that forum and the pictures and stuff, it seems like all they did was spend time putting all this stuff together and got results you'd expect anyone to get if they did this. Most people probably just didn't do it because there wasn't much of a point. Seems more like a result of labor than ingenuity.Maybe I am way off base though as I am certainly not an expert and stopped building my own computers and getting into benchmark stuff years ago.

eVGA paid for all that hardware, k|ngp|n is such a famous OCer that he doesn't have to buy anything anymore.basically they did it to prove that NVIDIA is back on top of ATI again. Not really any other reason.

a couple observations:a) k|ngp|n is probably the most renowned OC'er in the world and has held most of the world records for the last couple of yearsb) it's EVGA's equipment that was used to set the OC record, there is an OC enthusiast audience, and to them this is very relevant and helps the EVGA brand name in this niche. there's something to be said to say you're #1 in the world and that your brand was used in a world record setting machine.c) OC'ing shows stability and quality of the hardware to be able to put to the extreme conditions and still be able to POST, much less run any sort of benchmarking applicationd) this is no different than going after any other world record, it's just about bragging rightse) it's not just something anyone can do, there's engineering involved in figuring out how to best cool & power these pieces of hardware, it's not as simple as just throwing the hardware together and dipping it in liquid nitrogen, there's also many OS and hardware tweaks involved, there's accumulated knowledge and experience that comes with OC'ing to be able to hit those marks... you aren't going to get close to these kind of results if you did this yourself, unless you knew all the tweaks they did.now if you want to discuss whether it's relevant or not to you or whether 3dmark is valid or not, well those are different discussions.also this was just run on the 197.55 driver which enabled 4-way SLI for the 480, prior to this WHQL driver this wasn't possible.[Edited on April 30, 2010 at 3:30 PM. well if it's not multi-threaded, then it probably cannot ever be maxxed out, unless you had a 8Ghz single-core processor, and a 4Ghz single-core gpu. if that's the case the game is a terrible benchmark.

good point. i can't remember the benchmarks but i think the jump from dual core to quad and from dual sli to tri wasn't gigantic. Also you're assuming cpus won't get faster per clock in the future.

well they get faster based on smaller manufacturing processes and newer architectures, i mean we've been able to OC to 5Ghz since the P4 days.... i'm just saying based on the current architecture we'd need to jump in frequency that much to see a significant improvement, unless we wait another 2 generations which could take 2-3 years, it's just that newer processors aren't focused on single-core performance anymore[Edited on April 30, 2010 at 4:37 PM. wtf kind of cooler is that? And at that point why didn't you go with liquid? Lastly, did you stand the machine up? It would put a whole lot of stress on those little clips holding everyting together

It's just a Tuniq Tower 120, mid level air coolingIt weighs much less than Thermalright 120 models with 2 fans (mine has an internal 120mm fan)Also the only risk is bouncing the case, so you lay it heat sink up when traveling.

^ Notice it's running at -180C idle and 22C under load ( > 200C temperature increase)? The processor would explode on air or water cooling.

^ i don’t know if that reasoning holds…it looks like they are merely immersing the equipment in LN2 not pumping it through pumps, which means it’s just cold air N2 doing a fair bit of the actual cooling (just like how you can dip your hand in liquid nitrogen, a bubble of insulating air forms around it).I would bet they could do that with a standard properly designed liquid cooling setup.
