I posted this in the Treme thread, but for those who don't follow it but still love/want to love The Wire may want to see this.

Starting in July DirecTV will begin airing all 5 seasons of The Wire on Sunday nights uncut, unedited, commercial free, and in HD on their 101 network.

http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2010-4-12-directv-gets-up-on-the-wire

It's a great opportunity for old fans who don't have the season sets on DVD to go back and watch it all over again, and for new fans who don't want to shell out the coin for the DVDs to see the show in all of it's glory.

indeed

actually that 2-3 stretch of episodes is awesome

it all has to do with the Free Zone, but that particular scene is the look on Bub's friend's face when they are the first people to get dropped into it BY the police

One of The Wire's finest moments and quite possibly the greatest opening scene to a season in television history (not to mention, it opened arguably the greatest season of any show in television history):

And another one of the greatest moments on The Wire:

This scene was one of the most satisfying scenes just because De'Londa was so difficult throughout the season:

Plus, that one line can almost sum up the whole show ("Who the fuck would wanna be that if they could be anything else?")

Here we go with the totally unfounded hatred of Treme again...I'm sure you would hate on any show David Simon did after The Wire regardless of how good it was.

So all you people watching this show for the first time, what do you think?
I think it's good stuff. The story line is pretty great, and has plenty of complexities to keep it interesting.

the actress who portrays snoop, and actually has the same name (Felicia Pearson?) actually did prison time for murder

also the intro to whatever episode where she goes into the hardware store is fucking gold

So can we post spoilers? I know this thread was aimed at those who haven't seen it before, so I'll tag it. Also, I'm going ahead of the DirecTV airings and am midway through Season 2. Way too engrossing to watch it so slowly knowing I can get at every episode.

So how is it that the police, aside from McNulty, have no clue who Avon was? Is that just supposed to be indicative of the departments general indifference or the turnover in the drug trade?

I always got the impression it was because guys like Avon and Stringer Bell did such a good job of putting alot of distance between themselves and the guys on the street.

^that and the department seemed far more interested in snatch and grabs and massing arrests of low level guys that gave stats

^,^^ both are correct.

you quickly learn that the upper brass care more about the arrest figures and numbers than they do about combating the root of the problem.

plus, avon had never been arrested as an adult, and none of the lieutenants other than D were barksdales, so there was no obvious connection

Technically Freamon had some idea of who he was, since he managed to find that old boxing poster.

the idea is that most police work in baltimore is just arresting the street dealers and not trying to look for an organized gang

I just watched the episode Middle Ground, the one where Stringer is killed. That seriously might be the best television episode I've ever watched. The intro with Mouzone and Omar was awesome, the rooftop scene with Stringer and Avon was great scripting/acting and when Stinger was killed it was expected given the Avon/Stringer breakdown but still a "holy shit" scene in and of itself...

Quote :
"Sometimes government officials draw fire for potentially overstepping their authority — but Attorney General Eric Holder will probably get some praise for ordering the writers of the critically-acclaimed television series HBO “The Wire” to come up with more episodes or a movie.

The gritty fictional series, which ran five seasons on HBO, showed the raw side of Baltimore as it endured hundreds of murders annually and a rampant drug scene. The show focused on the cash-strapped city police trying to root out crime as well as the drug dealers fighting for turf, using children to run their corners and the related effects on the city.

On Tuesday three of the actors, Wendell Pierce (“Bunk”), Sonja Sohn (“Kima”) and Jim True-Frost (“Prez”), dropped by the Justice Department to join Holder in trying to draw attention to the issue of protecting children from drug abuse and exploitation.

But Holder could not resist a plea — well really an order — to the writers David Simon and Ed Burns for more.

“I want to speak directly to Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of ‘The Wire’,” Holder said, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. “That’s actually at a minimum. … If you don’t do a season, do a movie. We’ve done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon.”

Wendell “Bunk” Pierce, who is now on the latest HBO hit “Treme”, chimed in with a “hear hear.""
