Hey guys,

Have any of you participated in one of these before, or do you know someone who has? My girlfriend and I will be competing in the one in Greenville next weekend, so any help would be appreciated.

A few of the specific questions we had:

1) Are there any things you would recommend bringing? We are currently planning on having our portable GPS - a pocket calculator - and blackberry + internet

2) The rules state you can use any form of non motorized transportation. Is there a huge benefit to having bikes, roller blades, etc - or were most of the clues within a reasonable running/jogging distance

3) Are you allowed to use outside help? IE: Can I grab a guy off the street to ask for help with the clues/questions if needed -- Can we call friends to have them look up information online or just generally assist via the phone?

Any other advice is appreciated.

The best I can tell:

We will be competing against 249 other teams -- they send a clue to your cell phone via text messaging. You solve the clue/riddle/question(Dont know what to expect) and that takes you to the next spot where you get your next clue texted to you. Sounds kinda like "The Amazing Race" in that regard.

This years prize is a $12,000 diamond ring.

My gf and I did this in Raleigh last year, it was a lot of fun.

1) My iPhone was a HUGE help, I guess I kinda used the GPS on that so maybe a portable one would help

2) YES, definitely take a bike. I think there were a couple of teams that just went in together and all 4 people had bikes, they all split up and killed everybody else's score

3) Yeah, we would ask local cops and stuff if we didn't know what something was. Usually you would be walking down the street and see a group of people wearing Bailey's tshirts staring at something so most of the clues weren't too hard to find

Hey TJB -- from what you said in #2 -- does that mean that you don't need to go around as a team? IE: She can go do 1 clue while I go do a different one? Or are you unable to get the next clue until you complete the first one?

Oh, you may already know this but I didn't before hand; the ring isn't actually hidden somewhere. Just whoever gets the most points by answering the questions wins the ring.

Current observation and a question:

You get a text that gives you a clue directing you to an area of town, shortly afterward you receive other clues that direct you to text them back with answers that you generally need to be in the area to get (what does this sign say, how many of *whatever* are at this location, etc). A correct answer is worth a certain number of points, an incorrect answer penalizes you a certain number of points. The team that gets the highest # of points by the end of the event wins.

My new question: how big of a factor does time play into everything? From what I understand there are a finite amount of clues/questions. Were you rushed to complete everything in the time frame given, or was there enough time to answer all of the clues/questions? Also, in the event two teams end up with the same amount of points, I'd imagine the fastest time in the tie breaker?

So each correct question was worth an avg of 4 points or so. I think I ended up with about 120 points. I definitely know there were teams with 400 or so points. So, I'm pretty sure that you will have waaaaay more questions than you have time for so do everything as quick as you can. There was one question that I ended up spending like 30 mins on but it ended up being worth 7 or 8 points so whether it was worth it or not, idk.

As for the tiebreaker, no idea, I would assume the same thing.
