I have a 96 Toyota Avalon that needs a new timing belt. Where would be the best place to go and how much money am I looking at dropping?

best place to go - take it to someone on herecost - the belt costs less than $50 (probably around $30)...not sure about how to do it, though

if you take it to a shop they'll rape you on labor and misc shit. at least $500

I would see if anyone has the factory service manual for the Avalon and determine how difficult the process of replacing it is. Maybe you could make a better decision that way.

Well, the job's a bitch. I highly recommend replacing the water pump and the tensioner and idler pulleys while in there doing it.This is a job I am highly qualified to do. I'd call and get a few over-the-phone quotes...let me know what you find out, and I'll beat it by a decent margin.

ZXAppeal and Jeepman did my 4Runner timing belt as well as a bunch of other misc services and I'd recommend taking him up on his offer. He knows what he's doing.

^^Do this.

zxappeal knows what he's doing--he's good people. I recommend his services as well.

so who wants to do a timing belt on an 03 Neon?

I could do a timing belt on a Strapon. Why don't you just trade it before something else shits the bed?

i've never changed my timing belt, maybe i should do that

Don't bother changing your timing belt on a non-interference engine. Just let that son of a bitch rot until it snaps. Then, you can have a nice adventure while you wait for the tow truck, etc.

that thought occurred to me
