^^Repeats are necessary.^Are all of those political issues though?
4/1/2010 2:45:14 PM
I'm not sure I would say wide-spread political issues... but if you take any of the individual denominations (like you listed for other religions) there would be some sort of political issue. I mean, I think religion/Christianity as a whole is a political issue, and maybe labels underneath that wouldn't need to be any more specific than Catholicism/Protestantism? Even some types of protestant churches would count as political (Baptist, Pentacostal Holiness, etc), or arguably more political in America (which is the topic) than Buddhism or Hinduism or Bahai? I didn't want to leave one out just because *I* wasn't aware of a political issue.Feel free to pare it down though! And somewhere on the list (I'm not sure where) needs to have Housing and Public Housing (Hope VI, Section 8, Discrimination etc).[Edited on April 1, 2010 at 2:53 PM. If you go to CNN's politics section right now you can certainly find stories like "Should Church force pope out" for the church's covering up sex abuse scandals? And Burro's made a thread in our politics section on a christian militia. And Romney vs Huckabee discussions often involve a discussion of whether Mormonism counts as a "real" type of Christianity as much as Southern Baptist does. Part of the reason Texas is removing Thomas Jefferson from history text books is because he was too liberal in advocating for a separation of church and state. Nuns came into the health care debate on the side of the reform that was passed. So I think Gzusfrk is on the right track in counting religion as a part of politics.
4/1/2010 3:06:22 PM
Should definitely keep the list to actual present-day issues, instead of just listing political entities/topics.
4/1/2010 3:18:25 PM
Are we talking political issues nationally, statewide, local, or all of the above? Should Wake County School Board incompetence make the list or Chapel Hill's fight over whether downtown should be taller or instead they should spread wider and cut more into the rural buffer, or fights over which counties or neighborhoods should be near landfills, and the like make the list? Some issues seem to cross categories, like public transit with buses locally, or statewide (NC DOT does roads across the state here where as in GA you'd see municipalities paying for them so you get some areas with really good roads and some with really bad instead of a more even spread) or school funding (NC does it largely at the state level where as Texas depends more on municipalities so you get some really rich schools and some dreadfully poor ones).

Why is "Holocaust" up there? That could go in an Israel category.
4/1/2010 4:39:16 PM
^I just copied some issues from wikipedia, and didn't move all of them appropriately. ^^Gee, maybe just national issues. Perhaps state issues, but only if they're general and apply to all states....?^^^^,^^^^^Right, but each individual denomination isn't a political issue... As a subsection of women in the military, I think Nerdchick was saying something in the soapbox the other day about them being in the process of removing the ban on women serving in submarines.Perhaps under economics, there has been a lot of discussion of a Consumer Finance Protection Agency lately.Under election reform perhaps a section on campaign financing with things like the proposal for stand by your ad, and shareholder approval would be appropriate given the recent SCOTUS ruling. Also efforts for Public Financing of Campaigns/Voter Owned Elections would be appropriate.Comprehensive sex ed might be another topic worth adding. The democrats in this state have moved us closer in that direction less than a year ago, but abstinence only vs comprehensive sex is a hot topic in many states. As long as you list animals up there you might add puppy mill legislation, and tethering/chaining related legislation.[Edited on April 1, 2010 at 6:12 PM. "feminist" is a meaningless term at this point. There are too many mutually exclusives ideologies that call themselves feminism that you can't say anything about feminism without committing the one true Scotsman (like that comic illustrates).

Every issue is political if you refuse to mind your own business.
10/21/2013 3:06:34 PM
^^^ what do you mean "enumerated?" If it's what I think you mean, it's because a number of states would not ratify the constitution without adding the bill of rights. So although they are technically amendments, they are in essence as much a part of the constitution as the separation of powers.
10/21/2013 3:11:57 PM
I mean exactly what I wrote: To count off or name one by one; list:I understand, as you mentioned, why the first 10 Amendments are set apart as a group in historical context. As political issues, not so much (although there tends to be somewhat less controversy surrounding the rest, because so many they are, to a greater extent, written to address specific issues, not to establish broader principles.)Still, there's a lot more to the Constitution than the Bill of Rights; there are plenty of things that are "issues" that live in the general articles, for example.[Edited on October 21, 2013 at 4:04 PM.
