http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/nintendo-announces-3ds-the-glasses-free-3d-successor-to-the-d/
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/breaking-nintendo-announces-the-3ds-more-news-at-e3/

Quote :
"Nintendo has just slipped out a press release in Japan informing the world that all-new 3D-capable portable hardware is coming, with a full unveiling set for E3 2010 this June. Tentatively titled the 3DS, this glasses-free 3D wonder is pitched as the successor to both the DS and DSi, and will use a "compatible cart" that should ensure backwards compatibility with your vast library of favorites from the older consoles. Nintendo expects to launch these into retail "during the fiscal year ending March 2011." "

Quote :
"There are a few dots to connect, however -- 3D gaming is on the rise, and a few other companies have also experimented with head tracking as a way to implement 3D effects. Nintendo's own Satoru Iwata hasn't been impressed with 3D gaming in the past, but his issue is with the glasses, not the technology: "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home," he said recently. We've also heard that the next handheld would have a "movement sensor" of some kind, so if Nintendo really has designed a head-tracking 3D solution, then maybe the console is ready to go"

I honestly checked the date to see if it was April 1st yet. I guess the motion controls on the Wii made them boatloads of money, so they're moving on to the next completely useless fad that everyone thinks they have to own.

I reaaaaally want to see games implement headtracking like in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw

.... And that kind of thing would be most effective on immersive first person games (I think horror would be the best candidate). I really couldn't give a shit about seeing in on a tiny screen while playing Nintendogs.

So how long before Sony steals this idea and puts it on the next PSP?

Oh and is this an actual new handheld system or just a 3D version of the DS? I really hope it's a new system because if not it will be the fourth iteration which is kinda silly.

If this is any good then Sony needs to watch out. The PSP kind of failed.

I'm not a big fan of the 3D craze but if it's built in and the graphics are as good as they are boasting this may be a late Christmas/Birthday gift to myself.

I'm still waiting for a release date and price, but if it lets me play Starfox 64 in 3D I'll have a hard time resisting.

I hate to double post, but I was thinking about it today, and this thing has incredible potential.

Imagine:
- You place an augmented-reality mat on a table (with the checkerboard-looking things).
- The 3DS uses the 2 front cameras to figure out exactly where it is relative to the mat.
- It draws a Mario 64 level over the mat. To move the game camera you just walk around the mat/table, getting closer to zoom in.
- The Mario level appears in 3-D on the screen, adding to the illusion.

Or imagine it's a chess game and you can see the virtual chess peices fighting in 3-D on your table.

I think I read somewhere that they had something similar to this, only it made a virtual hole in the table that enemies crawled out of and you had to aim the entire 3DS at them to shoot them.

Japanese price is $300. Until that drops $100, I'll be sitting this one out.

i agree, id rather have a ps3 for that price over a handheld, though im sure it will be really good and worth it to a lot of people

its also sometimes worth it to wait for the 2nd generation nintendo products, you know there will be one

Nintendo's holding a live 3DS press event right now. Announcements so far are

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/3ds-features-only-one-friend-code/

Quote :
"Glory, glory saints be praised! The days of game-specific Friend Codes are behind us! ... At least, they are on the 3DS. At today's 3DS launch reveal, Reggie Fils-Amie announced that the system will use only one friend code across all games. Plus, if someone's on the same WiFi network as you, you don't have to enter their codes! It's a Christmas miracle! (Just, you know, 26 days late.) "

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/nintendo-3ds-price-release-date/

Quote :
"The Nintendo 3DS will hit stores in North America on March 27, at a price point of $249.99, as revealed today in New York City. It's available in Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black.

The 3DS was first revealed in a cryptic press release in March 2010, shortly before the North American release of the DSi XL. In addition to increased processing power and screen resolution, the system promises adjustable 3D visuals without requiring 3D glasses. It also includes built-in augmented reality games, some using bundled "AR cards." An "Activity Log" tracks your gameplay as well as your steps, graphing each and dispensing "Game Coins" that can be spent in games. You can make Miis either in a menu interface or automatically from pictures. Other features include a 3DS version of the DSi's sound app, a web browser, and 3D video capability.

Marquee Nintendo games on the horizon include an updated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, along with new Pilotwings, Star Fox, Nintendogs, and Kid Icarus titles, and the original submarine game Steel Diver. From third parties, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition is possibly the biggest, with Dead or Alive, two Resident Evils, and Metal Gear Solid 3 games also in the wings. "

joystiq is updating it as it is going on.

I'll wait until they drop the price or introduce something entirely new. Releasing a new Mario Kart, Star Fox, Metroid, Kirby, etc onto each new Nintendo system is losing its appeal and I'm not interested in old games with 3D tacked on. I would probably buy if they released a new Mario or Zelda that really makes the most of the technology though.

I've got a real hard-on for OoT right now and can't decide if I want to buy this or an old N64. Much cheaper and I can play it on my tv. This also opens up the door for more classic N64 gameplay. But the graphics and the future potential of the 3DS have me interested.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Well I just bought a 3DS for OoT and couldn't be happier. I was really surprised at how fun the built-in games are. And the 3D in Zelda is great. I'm really looking forward to playing Ocarina wherever I want, can't wait for Starfox 3D.

I'm not very far, but what I've seen so far has been great.

The graphics are better and the controls work well (especially with item management on the touch screen). The 3D is pretty spectacular, I spent a good 10 minutes just watching the title screen play over and over.

It also has the Master Quest, which I never fully beat on the Gamecube. I wish they'd do a 3D version of Majora's Mask as well, I never completed that one.

It's really funny how I get used to the 3D and forget it's there, but if I pull the depth slider down to 2D it looks so flat. I was skeptical of the motion controls for the first-person camera, but it actually works well, although it's better suited for 2D play because it's easy to break the 3D effect while moving the handheld around.

Why do they remake Mario 30000 times over, but I can't get one measly Super Metroid remake. Metroid games are few and far between, comparatively, and it makes me sad...

If they announce a Super M remake for 3DS I will buy it: My first handheld since the GBA.

You can it for $170 at some Wal Marts today.

If you buy the 3DS before "official" price drop on the 12th you can get 20 free games through their Ambassador program. But you have to connect the eShop. So if you buy don't just leave it sitting in the box.

I personally can't justify dropping the dough when there are hardly any games I want to play on it.

Yeah so I caved . Picked it up at Target at Brier Creek. I had to disable security on my wireless network before it would connect to the Internet. Pretty disappointing and obviously not something I'm going to stick with moving forward.

After I got it to connect w/o security once I turned security back on and it connects fine now. I also let the 3DS search for the network instead of manually entering the network's name, which seemed to make a difference. Yay for shitty online implementation.

The NES games are available today, but the way to get them is a little wonky:

Quote :
"Keep in mind that we're talking about the process by which you receive 20 free games (and thus temper your rage), but you're kind of not going to believe the process through which qualified 3DS owners will acquire the "Ambassador Program" games starting September 1.

Nintendo posted a how-to on its support page, and ... a lot of people are going to need it. In order to get your free games, you'll have to open up the eShop (cool so far), then ... go into the "Settings/Other" menu there, scroll to "Account Activity," and then click to "redownload" each game, even though you're actually downloading them for the first time.

Sounds kind of crazy, but our guess is that Nintendo has opted to add the games to everyone's accounts as already having been purchased, rather than generate codes for specific games. We're not even sure it's possible to distribute a download code for a 3DS game.

But it gets crazier! In order to keep up with news related to the program, Nintendo will offer the "Ambassador Certificate" for download -- which is actually a video. You'll be able to tap icons during the video for updates about when games will be available."

Having the NES games has made me feel a lot better about early adopting this system. I expect I'll only end up using Mario, Zelda, and Metroid but still having them on hand is nice since my NES kicked the bucket a few years back.

I also look forward to the GBA games later this year.
