http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/has anyone installed the preview yet? wondering whether I should do it in a virtual machine or not - does it impact system stability? if not, it's ok because i never use IE otherwise.
3/17/2010 2:43:11 PM
its a standalone application, and not a full browser either. It wont have any impact on your system.
3/17/2010 2:44:14 PM
jeebus, another one?
3/17/2010 2:44:29 PM
yeah, it might actually be a good browserthey already promised support for h264 thru html5 video tagmore hitting most sites today since it was just announced yesterday at MIX10.http://net.tutsplus.com/articles/news/ie9-may-actually-be-a-great-browser/
3/17/2010 2:53:14 PM
it would definitely be cool if microsoft got it right after so many fails (though i accept IE8 as not completely sucking donkey balls)
3/17/2010 2:55:17 PM
all other browsers are pointless and the web is a pretty bad platform with pretty bad languages. If you've ever really cared about a web browser you're probably a really annoying or boring person.
3/17/2010 3:02:19 PM
They've only had two "fails".1) Allowing IE6 to grow completely stagnate2) IE7 not being particularly good at anything during a time when Firefox had started pushing harder and harder for marketshare.
3/17/2010 3:03:20 PM
MS is also collaborating more with the jQuery community so that has got to be a good sign for IE9. if they can enhance the speed at which these latest jquery sites work using Chakra, we'd all go running right back to IE9http://blog.jquery.com/2010/03/16/microsoft-to-expand-its-collaboration-with-the-jquery-community/[Edited on March 17, 2010 at 3:09 PM. I would be much happier if IE threw their support in with Mootools simply because Mootools was the framework that always ran better in IE.(And that's the one I know )
3/17/2010 3:15:54 PM
I've used jQuery and Dojo/Dijit a lot among others. Definitely like jQuery a lot better.-I agree with you.
3/17/2010 3:17:59 PM
I see what you mean now Shaggyit's just a preview And apparently WinXP users won't get any lovin'http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2361485,00.asp[Edited on March 17, 2010 at 4:12 PM. Reason : .]

The JavaScript engine for IE9 is being built by the developer division. I have very high confidence that it's going to be REALLY good, and bring web developers back to a Micosoft ecosystem

WEB DEVELOPERS NEED TO KEEP THEY ASSES IN A WEB ECOSYSTEM
3/17/2010 5:24:35 PM

I don't know which user I am supposed to agree with.- I agree with you both.

IE 8 had a few nice new features, but it crashed all the damn time. therefore, i hate it and don't use it.
3/17/2010 8:09:48 PM
IE 8 just didn't run as fast as chrome does for me, so I only used it when i absolutely had to

3/18/2010 12:57:17 AM
Firefox should just use the underlying operating system's video playback system so it doesn't need to worry about codecs, but it wont because the devs are sperglords.

looks like IE continues its reign as the standard browser by which all will be measured.

I played with the beats thing, and realize how untalented I am.I couldn't come up with anything even remotely pleasing.

finally web developers will be able to experience HTML5 utopiawell as soon as IE6 and Windows XP fade from the userbase

^^now it will be more like 1.3 vs. 1.1but he has a larger historical point: for 6 years, from IE3 in early 1996 to IE6 in 2001, up until Mozilla 1.0 and Netscape 7 in mid-2002, IE was the best freely-available browser in existence (ok, I don't know how well Konqueror worked back then but that was unavailable on Windows or the Mac)[Edited on August 6, 2010 at 12:16 AM. Reason : IE ceased to be the best in 2002, but wasn't recognized as such until 2005
8/6/2010 12:15:41 AM
IE is the standard browser for most users and therefore the most important browser to develop against. IE9 will bring the lost sheep back into the fold, and no one will ever need to waste time testing in other browsers ever again. (not that they should bother now)
8/6/2010 10:04:36 AM
Netscape 7 was terrible. That's why it was used by a grand total of 3 people.Netscape was so bad that even after AOL bought them, they still kept IE as the packaged browser for years, talked about changing it (I'm not sure they ever actually did since there was a ton of backlash) and then wound up creating their own IE-based browser after the fact.Opera's been decent for quite a while, but until Firefox 2 came out, IE was the best browsing experience you were going to have.

ie9 owns. best browser since ie8
9/15/2010 3:11:44 PM
Reminds me of this:It's 2010, we don't need to restart the entire computer anymore. Thanks.
9/15/2010 3:15:03 PM
IE9 updates the html render engine for the entire OS which means anything open and using the render engine would need to be closed. Rebooting is the easiest way to do this without risking the user re-opening something or fucking with files while they're trying to be replaced. Its essentially a windows update in addition to a new browser UI.
9/15/2010 3:24:48 PM
I was actually about to keep IE8 open while I installed, though. Also: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/IE9SiteSpecificBrowsersAndAddingYourOwnJumpListItemsToPinnedTabs.aspxThe jump lists are pretty cool, but the taskbar notification and manipulation stuff is really nice looking. Takes the "is it a webapp or a normal app?" thing to the logical next step.

seasons browsers change...feelings change...Webkit is the most forward-thinking rendering engineAnyway I just installed the IE9 Beta and it's good so far; I especially love its warning about BHOs (like toolbars) that slow the browser down, and I noticed that the two slowest ones by far were ones I had installed deliberately: the Web Accessibility Toolbar and the Debug Bar, the only two that took even close to a second (WAT took about 2 seconds, Debug Bar took just under half a second, and then Chrome Frame took less than a fifth of a second and the others took smaller fractions). What I'd enjoy is some way to integrate into Mozilla Plugin Check (as Firefox does) or SecBrowsing (there's a Chrome extension): http://secbrowsing.appspot.com/
